The newspaper has its roots in five predecessors, beginning with the Waco Evening Telephone in 1892. The Tribune-Herald took its current identity when E.S. Fentress and Charles Marsh, who owned the Waco News-Tribune, bought the Waco Times-Herald. That purchase was the beginning of Newspapers, Inc., a chain which eventually owned 13 newspapers. Founded 1892 (as the Waco Evening Telephone).

"Mattie Pearl Powell, 82, of Bellmead, Texas, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at home surrounded by family. Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 3, at Wortham Bend Cemetery with the Rev. Lester Adams officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, at Bellmead Funeral Home. Mattie was born in Bosqueville, Texas, to the late Brand and Nan (McAdams) Thomas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Powell; and granddaughters, Darla and Barbara Trail. "Ruby "Dean" Ellison, 82, passed away Wednesday, November 2, 2011, in Bowie, Texas. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 5, 2011, at the First Baptist Church of Sunset with Charles Reed and Jeff Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 til' 8:00 p.m. at the White Family Funeral Home in Bowie. Arrangements entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home of Bowie. Dean was born January 2, 1929 to Ben and Annie (Heard) Clary in Dew, Texas. She worked for Haggar Slack Company until her retirement with 25 years of service. Dean married W.C. Gehrels in November of 1947 and later married Roy Ellison on August 6, 1959 in Gainesville, Texas. She loved to cook and sew. Dean was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sunset and of the Order of the Eastern Star #16 in Bowie. She is remembered with love and appreciation for her devoted years of life as a wife and mother. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Annie Clary, and one sister. Dean is survived by her son, Robert Gehrels of Sunset; brother, Robert Clary and wife, Emma of Fairfield; uncle, John D. Clary of Dew; niece, Kathy Frost and husband, Paul of Rossville, GA; great niece, Amanda Gordon and husband, Josh of Chattanooga, TN; great nephew, Dustin Frost of Rossville, GA."

Services will be 11 a.m., Friday, June 1, 2012, at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home, Chapel in Fairfleld. Burial will follow at Dew Cemetery. He was born in Dew, Texas, to the late Ben Clary and Annie Heard Clary. He was preceded in death by his son, Terry Clary; and sisters, Louise Husketh and Dean Ellison.
