Notes on Hyderabad

Hyderabad, my hometown, is a fast-growing metropolis and may well become the fifth biggest city in India. It is going through a big modernisation drive. Flyovers were being constructed in many parts of the city to handle the increased vehicular traffic around the time I left India in August of 1999. Secunderabad is its twin city. I don't know for sure where the boundary between the two lies but it is generally accepted that the 1.6 km long Tank Bund Road connects the two. Otherwise, for all practical purposes they are just one big city. Hyderabad is an interesting mixture of the old and the modern in many aspects, buildings, culture, food, etc. Hyderabad is home to four universities- Osmania University, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Telugu University and University of Hyderabad. The city has some premier R&D institutes. Some of these are listed below.

Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology
Defence Research and Development Organisation
Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory
Indian Institute of Chemical Technology
National Geophysical Research Institute

Besides these, Hyderabad has many industries of national strategic importance. Some of these are listed below.

Nuclear Fuel Complex
Hindustan Aeronautical Limited
Bharat Dyanmics Limited
Electronics Corporation of India, Ltd.
Mishra Dhatu Nigam
Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited

Hyderabad has a booming software industry and is fast catching up with Bangalore, often called the Silicon Valley of India, in this field. However, it does not have the heavy industry and factories that some other cities like Bombay have. Secunderabad, to the north of Hyderabad, was originally established as a military cantonment in British India. Today, Secunderabad cantonment is a sprawling facility and is the biggest(?) in the country. There is another military cantonment in the Golconda area on the outskirts of the city and an air force training centre in Hakimpet. My school was in the Secunderabad cantonment area (Hakimpet was nearby) and we would often get to see fighter jets perform maneouvres in the skies above. Hyderabad/Secunderabad has many interesting places to see. andhratoday.com has some good information.
