My
Holdridge Family
1813-2000
This
is John H Holdridge Jr. and his wife Martha A Jackson Holdridge
John H Holdridge Jr is the son of John and Eady Holdridge.
It would seem that here in America there are two major Groups of Holdridges. In all likelyhood these two Holdridge lines all come from one family.
First there is the New York Holdridge. There is a large number of Holdridge families that congregated around the New York area and stayed there for many years. Some traveled west to Ohio and some northern states. There has been a great deal of information studied about these Holdridges. I call these the "Northern Holdridges". Although those Holdridges have travelled the world over, they have seldom come south in the history of the last 100 years. For information on this noble Holdridge line, see the links at the bottom of this page.
The
Second "batch" of Holdridges is my line of Holdridges.
The Southern Holdridges. They concentrated in South Carolina,
then travelled into Georgia and Alabama, making then
the long journey to Texas.
This is the Holdridge line that I decend from.
John Holdridge was born in Laurens District, South Carolina 1813. He parentage and lineage is still a mystery to us today. Likewise we know little about his childhood.
When John was 26 years old he married Eadith Coley. Edith was born in 1822 in North Carolina and was some 9 years younger than John. The two married July 28, 1838 in Newton County Georgia. They would later move on to Tallapoosa County Alabama. The move from Georgia to Alabama happened sometime around 1840.
Very
little if anything is known about John Holdridge. We assume that
he was a farmer. This we glean also from the records of the
census. Edith is said to be an Indian.
We are not sure at this time what tribe of Indian she comes from.
John died June 12, 1881. Eady died in 1812 in Tallapoosa County Alabama.
John and Edith Coley Holdridge had the following children
James W Holdridge
Mary Holdridge Lee
Edmond C Holdridge
Martha Ann Holdridge Lee
Nancy Holdridge
George M Holdridge
