Jonathan M. Woodard

JONATHAN M. WOODARD CAME TO TEXAS WITH HIS WIFE MARY AND TWO CHILDREN,WILLIAM AND MARY C.,SOMETIME IN 1857,AS RECORDS IN VOL.H, PAGE 455 OF PROBATE MINUTES OF ANDERSON COUNTY REFLECT THAT A PETITION BY JONATHAN M. WOODARD BE GRANTED AND ORDERED RECORDED THAT ON OR ABOUT THE 26TH OF FEBRUARY AD 1858 ,J.W.WOODARD DID BARGAIN AND SELL TO PETITIONER A CERTAIN TRACT OF LAND IN WHICH THE SAID J.M.WOODARD NOW RESIDES- LYING WEST OF RACHEL WOODARD'S HOMESTEAD AND COMPRISING TWO HUNDRED AND SEVEN ACRES,ETC. THIS DOCUMENT IS DATED DURING THE SEPTEMBER 1866 TERM OF PROBATE COURT. MOSES WOODARD, JONATHAN' S UNCLE, DIED IN 1857, PRIOR TO GIVING DEED TO THE CHURCH AS HE HAD PROMISED. HOWEVER, HIS WIDOW RACHEL GAVE DEED TO THE OAK GROVE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH SOUTH IN 1860. THIS DEED, REGISTERED IN VOL. K,PAGES 180-181, OF ANDERSON COUNTY DEED BOOKS, LISTS JONATHAN M. WOODARD AS A VESTRYMAN, ESTABLISHING THE FACT THAT HE WAS WELL ESTABLISHED IN THE COUNTY AS OF THAT TIME.
ACCORDING TO THE 1860 CENSUS,WILLIAM WAS 4 YEARS OLD,AND MARY C. WAS 2 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME OF THE CENSUS. BOTH WERE BORN IN ALABAMA.J.M. WOODARD WAS LISTED AS BEING 26 YEARS OLD. THEY SETTLED IN THE SMALL COMMUNITY OF"PRUITT'S TANYARD"*
THE 1900 CENSUS FOR ANDERSON COUNTY STATES THAT BOTH HIS PARENTS WERE BOTH BORN IN SO.CAROLINA,WHILE HE HIMSELF WAS BORN IN ALABAMA.
THE 1850 CENSUS OF MARENGO COUNTY,ALA., LISTS HOUSEHOLD # 171 AS BEING HEADED BY A THOMAS C.WOODWARD (note spelling), WHITE MALE, AGE 23,OCCUPATION-FARMER. VALUE OF REAL ESTATE 1300.00. OCCUPANTS OF HOUSEHOLD: SARAH WOODWARD, WHITE FEMALE,AGE 46, BORN- SOUTH CAROLINA; RACHEL WOODWARD, WHITE FEMALE, AGE 21, BORN-ALABAMA;JONATHAN WOODWARD, WHITE MALE, AGE 19, BORN-ALABAMA;ROBERT WOODWARD, WHITE MALE, AGE 16, BORN-ALABAMA.BOTH JONATHON AND ROBERT ARE LISTED AS FARMERS,AS WELL AS THOMAS. THIS HOUSEHOLD IS LISTED AS BEING NEXT DOOR TO FAMILY #170 ,HEADED BY MOSES WOODWARD,AND RACHEL WOODWARD,WITH OFFSPRING OF SARAH,ANN,MARTHA,ROBERT,CHARLES F.,AND ELIZABETH. IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE ASS'T MARSHALL,GEORGE W. MORRIS, ENUMERATOR OF THE CENSUS INADVERTENTLY MISSPELLED THE NAME WOODWARD IN BOTH THESE FAMILIES, AS THE STATISTICS MATCH OTHER LISTINGS AS TO NAMES,DATES,ETC.IN CENSUS LISTINGS FOR ANDERSON COUNTY TEXAS,WHERE THE NAME IS SPELLED WOODARD.
ON PAGE 123 OF BOOK "MARRIAGE RECORDS OF MARENGO COUNTY,ALA.,THE FOLLOWING LISTING IS GIVEN: WOODWARD,JONATHAN M. & MARY DRINKARD,20 NOVEMBER 1854;23 NOVEMBER BY STEPHEN M. GILMORE,M.G.,@ ELLINGTON DRINKARD'S;JAMES ETHERADGE,BDN.(IN 1850 ONE JONATHON WOODWARD WAS 19,B.ALABAMA WITH SARAH WOODWARD,46,b.S.C.;MARY DRINKARD WAS 19,B ALABAMA WITH ELLINGTON DRINKARD,50,b.-S.C. . *(ACCORDING TO A DESCRIPTION OF CASS COUNTY IN A BOOK ENTITLED "EAST TEXAS FAMILY RECORDS" ON FILE AT THE ANDERSON COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY- A TAN YARD WAS WHERE "FARMERS COULD EXCHANGE THE RAW HIDES FOR LEATHER, OR PAY FOR THE TANNING OF THEIR HIDES WITH SWEET POTATOES,SYRUP,CORN, OR OTHER FARM PRODUCTS".) THERE IS A DESCRIPTION IN MRS. KATE HUNTER'S NOTEBOOK ( GENEALOGY SECTION - PALESTINE PUBLIC LIBRARY)BY A MRS. AMANDA HANCOCK, DAUGHTER OF PERRY STARR, IN WHICH SHE STATES THAT" HER GRANDFATHER T.J.STARR BUILT THE FIRST LOG HOUSE IN WHAT IS NOW REFERRED TO AS ELKHART. IT WAS 3 1/2 MILES NORTH OF PRESENT DAY ELKHART. THE FIRST POST OFFICE WAS LOCATED NEAR THERE -BY THE OLD IRON BRIDGE, 100 YARDS FROM THE OLD HOME. THERE WAS ALSO A TAN YARD THERE, & A SADDLE SHOP.MRS ANN PRUITT WAS THE POSTMISTRESS-IT HAD NOT A NAME. THE POST OFFICE WAS ON THE STAGE LINE FROM PALESTINE TO CROCKETT". THIS IS AS NEAR AS WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO LOCATE "PRUITT'S TAN YARD" AS GIVEN ON CENSUS REPORT FOR 1860. WHETHER HE SUBSEQUENTLY BECAME A PHYSICIAN OR WAS ALREADY A DOCTOR IS NOT KNOWN. HE IS LISTED ON THE 1900 CENSUS AS A PHYSICIAN, WIDOWED,AND LIVING WITH SON E.J. THERE IS A LISTING OF A DR. J.M.WOODARD AS BEING A "CONTRACT PHYSICIAN" IN THE 1902 EDITION OF THE DIRECTORY OF DOCTORS AND PHYSICIANS IN THE UNITED STATES PRIOR TO THAT DATE. HE IS LISTED IN ANDERSON COUNTY,TEXAS. DR. JOHN, OR JONATHAN, WOODARD IS BURIED IN FIELD'S CHAPEL CEMETERY., 8 MILES S/E OF PALESTINE,TEXAS.

BOOK-" MARRIAGE RECORDS OF MARENGO COUNTY,ALABAMA 1810-1878",PAGE 123 ON FILE-TEXAS STATE ARCHIVES.
J.M.WOODARD IS ALSO LISTED ON ANDERSON COUNTY VOTER'S LISTS FOR 1871 AND 1873. VOTER NO.1184 IN PRECINCT 2. HE IS LISTED IN ANDERSON COUNTY GENEALOGICAL LISTINGS OF SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEES AS BEING A TRUSTEE OR BOARD MEMBER OF FIELD'S CHAPEL SCHOOL.
RE: LISTING ON SOUNDEX REELS OF CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS FROM TEXAS, LOCATED AT THE CONFEDERATE VETERANS ARCHIVES, HILL COLLEGE, HILLSBORO,TEXAS, ONE JONATHAN M. WOODARD SERVED WITH THE 22ND INFANTRY BRIGADE, KNOWN AS HUBBARD'S BRIGADE, FROM JUNE 6,1862 TO DECEMBER 31,1864. THERE WAS ALSO A JONATHAN WOODARD WHO SERVED WITH COMPANY E, 34th TEXAS CAVALRY ( TERRELL'S REGIMENT,34th TEXAS CAVALRY),AND A J.M.WOODARD WHO SERVED WITH PILGRIM GUARDS, ACTIVE COMPANY,INFANTRY,PILGRIM BEAT # 2,ANDERSON COUNTY, 11th BRIGADE-ENLISTMENT DATE JULY 1861.
I HAVE XEROX COPIES OF THE INDEX CARDS WITH HIS MILITARY HISTORY THEREON FROM HILL COLLEGE CONFEDERATE LIBRARY, AND COPIES OF HIS FILE JACKETS DENOTING 3RD LT. AND 2ND LT. RANKS. HE IS LISTED ON FOUR ROSTER LISTS OF THE 22ND INFANTRY REGIMENT - ALL DURING THE YEAR 1862. NO OTHER ROSTERS ARE AVAILABLE AND A NOTE IS MADE THAT HE ONLY APPEARS ON FOUR ROSTERS. ON HIS INDEX CARDS. I HAVE XEROX COPIES OF THOSE ROSTERS FROM THE TEXAS STATE ARCHIVES.
THERE IS AN "INDIGENT FAMILIES "LISTING IN THE TEXAS STATE ARCHIVES IN WHICH A J.M.WOODARD WAS LISTED AS BEING FROM ANDERSON COUNTY AND WAS THE SOLE MEANS OF SUPPORT FOR HIS FAMILY OF FOUR DEPENDENTS,AND REQUESTING OF THE COMPTROLLER OF THE STATE OF TEXAS FOR IMMEDIATE RELIEF,AND SUPPORT OF THE FAMILIES OF THE SOLDIERS LISTED- SOME OF WHICH HAD DIED IN SERVICE, AND SOME OF WHICH WERE STILL "IN SERVICE". J.M.WOODARD WAS "IN SERVICE "AT THE TIME OF THE REQUEST- WHICH IS NOT DATED, BUT REFERS TO AN ACT OF THE LAST LEGISLATURE IN DECEMBER 1863,AND INSTRUCTIONS TO THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF ANDERSON COUNTY DATED DECEMBER 25,1863. IT WOULD BE ASSUMED THAT THE DOCUMENT WAS WRITTEN SOMETIME IN 1864.
THE LISTING GAVE J.M.WOODARD AS HAVING FOUR DEPENDENTS. THIS WOULD APPEAR TO BE OUR J.M.WOODARD, AS HIS FIRST TWO CHILDREN WERE BORN PRIOR TO 1858, AND HIS THIRD, DORA C. WOODARD WAS BORN IN 1860. WITH WIFE SARAH, THAT WOULD MAKE FOUR DEPENDENTS. FOURTH CHILD,THOMAS ALLEN WAS NOT BORN UNTIL LATER IN 1864, AFTER THE DOCUMENT WAS WRITTEN.
IN THE BOOK "ANCESTORS OF DR. FRANKLIN COLUMBUS WOODARD,AND HIS DESCENDANTS ", MENTION IS MADE THAT THERE WERE FIVE WOODARD MEN WHO SERVED THE CONFEDERACY. JONATHAN'S BROTHER JOHN WESLEY BEING ONE OF THEM. THE ABOVE NAMED SOUNDEX REEL CONTAINS THE NAMES OF THREE J.W.WOODARDS, WHICH COULD POSSIBLY BE JOHN WESLEY. ALL THREE WERE IN THE TEXAS CAVALRY- WELL'S REGIMENT, DeMORSE'S REGIMENT ( 29th TEXAS CAVALRY ), AND YOUNG'S REGIMENT,3rd TEXAS CAVALRY ( 11th TEXAS CAVALRY ). QUITE A FEW OTHER WOODARDS WERE ENLISTED IN THE 22nd REGIMENT FROM ANDERSON COUNTY, OR PALESTINE. THE NAMES, AT PRESENT, ARE NOT FAMILIAR AS THOSE KNOWN TO BE IN THE FAMILY,BUT ARE PROBABLY RELATED.
An August 8,1994 visit to the Texas Medical Association State Offices in Austin,Texas reveals that J.M. Woodard is listed in The Medical and Surgical Directory of the United States for the year 1890, and the R.L. Polk & Co. Medical & Surgical Register of the U.S., 4th edition. He is listed as being - or having an office in - Alder Branch, Texas. An asterisk beside his name in both publications indicates that no further information is available because questionaires as to his medical education were not returned. He is not listed as ever having been a member of the Texas Medical Association. Information received from the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners on August 12,1994, states that no one with that name has been previously licensed by them, but that they were only established in 1907. Prior to that date physcians were registered in the county where they practiced.
Inquiry to Anderson County Medical Association, dated August 8,1994 is pending as of this date August 17, 1994.
No answer has ever been received from Anderson County Medical Association as of 9/9/96
