Joseph Warren Underwood

Born 1836-Died 1882

Joseph Warren Underwood is the fifth son of William Underwood, born 06 March, 1800 AL, and Rebecca Lou Peak. They moved to Homer, TX Angelina Co. sometime before 1857.

Sometime in the Spring of 1882 Joseph, along with his brother-in-law, at least one of his brothers, and four of his first cousins left Homer, TX and traveled 100 miles to Elysian in Marion Co to enlist in the 18th Texas CSA Infantry,(Ochiltree's Regiment Texas Infantry)company L. He was listed as being 26 years old on his enlistment record however 1860 census lists him as 19 which would have made him about 21 or 22 years old. The last record we have of Private 1st class J. W. Underwood dated October 31, 1882, he had been transferred to Co. K, 14th Texas Infantry,(Clark's Regiment Infantry) and was listed as "sick in the hospital". As far as we know, he never returned home.

Civil War researchers have found his company was in Camp Nelson, AR. during the fall and winter of 1882 where about 1500 men, many of them Texans, died from disease. Joseph W. Underwood was probably one of them and now lies in a grave marked "unknown soldier" at Camp Nelson Cemetery, AR.

Joseph Warren Underwood was my great-great uncle.
