William H. Garrett

William (Bill) H. Garrett was born in Alabama on October 31, 1826. He was the third son of William Sr. Susannah Huggins. William H. was just a year old when his family moved west to Tennessee. In 1833 the family again to Gibson County, Indiana, where his grandfather, Presley lived.
In the spring of 1842, his family started out for new opportunities in the newly formed State of Texas. William H. was about 16 years old.
William H. started breaking the sod on their new farm in September 1843, while also working at his own trade as a blacksmith. On March 16, 1848 William H. married Lucinda Welch of Hopkins County, TX. (See Marriage Certificate) Lucinda was born 1826 in Lawrence County, TN., the daughter of Thomas and Hetty Welch. Her sister, Emily, was married to William Marion Moss of Hopkins County, TX.
William H. and Lucinda had five children.
1.James Marion was born 1849.
2. Malinda C. was born 1851
3. William Washington was born January 1851
4. Hettie Perlina was born March 18, 1853
5. Thomas P. was born 1855
After the death of Lucinda, William H. married Jane Farr on October 30, 1856. Jane was born in 1835 in Ireland. (She is found on the 1850 Hopkins County Census living with the Bingham family) Jane and William had seven children.

2. Harrison D. was born in 1863
3. Mary Jane was born in December 1863
4. Melvira was born 1866
5. Joseph Warren was born 1869
6. John F. was born 1872
7. Robert J. was born 1873
William H. Garrett, like his brothers and nephews served in the Confederacy during the Civil War. He enlisted in Sulpher Springs, Hopkins County, Texas in April 1862 and served in the 18th Texas Infantry, Company E.
In the 1860 Census, William H. and Jane were living in Johnson County, TX. In 1867, William sold three hundred and twenty acres of land in Hopkins County to Peter and J.W. Plunck.
