John C. Bockmon

John C. Bockmon* was born 29 Jul 1838 in either Georgia or Smith County, TN. Parents were Michael Bockman* and Ruth Boyd. John went to Cass County Texas with his parents prior to 1850 census.
John's mother died when he was 14 years old. His father remarried when John was almost 17, marrying Mary Jane Griffin. John married (1) ? ca 1858 and had two sons, William and Frank. John's wife died before 1868.
John joined the 18th Texas Inf, Co B in 1861 from Cass Co TX. He served under Col. Wm B. Ochiltree and was discharged in 1865. John married (2) Malissa Ann Darby (daughter of Benjamin Franklin Darby and Ann Elizabeth Moore).
John and his wife deeded land to Woodman of the World for use by Bradfield Chapel the church that still stands next to Bradfield Cemetery in Morris County near Daingerfield.
John and Malissa had 8 children: Benjamin Edgar, John Michael, Ida, James William, Homer H., Annie L., Charlie Boyd, and Carrie Moore Bockmon.
As far as has been determined John lived in Cass, Camp and Morris counties at various times. He died 20 Sep 1913. Malissa drew a widow's pension until she died 7 Mar 1916.
It speaks well for John C. that his children were well brought up and admired in the community and his grandchildren spoke well of him years later.
*John's father and uncles used the spelling BOCKMAN, John and his descendents used BOCKMON. Why the change? I don't know. My father, one of John C., grandsons was told by the family that anytime the name Bockmon was seen they were relatives. However this has not proved to be true. This is possibly one of those mysteries that is not meant to be solved.
