2 CONT Mrs Dunsmore was born Sept 12, 1895, at South Wayne, Wis., to Absolom and 
2 CONC Susan Saucerman. In 1903 she moved with her parents to a homestead 
2 CONC southwest of Hayes.
2 CONT In 1914 she married William W. Dunsmore at Wagner. The moved to Midland 
2 CONC in 1917 and in 1951 to Hot Springs, where she had since lived.
2 CONT Mrs Dunsmore is survived by three sons, M. W. "Kip" Dunsmore of Rapid 
2 CONC City, Kenneth D. Dunsmore of Fort Pierre, and Norman L. Dunsmore of 
2 CONC Houston, Texas; three daughters, Mrs Thurston (Wilma) Neil of Tempe, 
2 CONC Ariz., Mrs William (Zona) Neilsen of Oelrichs, and Mrs L. W. (Reva) 
2 CONC Griffith of San Leandro, Calif.; two brothers, John Saucerman of Midland, 
2 CONC and Stanley Evans of Hayes, 39 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.
2 CONT She was preceded in death by her husband, three sons, Charles, Leland and 
2 CONC Ivan, 12 brothers and sisters, and six grandchildren.

2 CONC researching I found in the 1870 census records for Second Creek Township, 
2 CONC Monroe County, West Virginia a listing for Hamilton Dunsmore 42, wife 
2 CONC Emily 37: children; William 7, Rebecca S. 9, Sarah E. 18, Carrie E. 2, 
2 CONC and Newton T.2/12months.  A copy of the census record is included in the 
2 CONC files.  It turns out that his name is William Hamilton Dunsmore.

2 CONT From the research of Kris Matthies for Erma Dunsmore Schuch
2 CONT      William died before 12September1882 at Barton County, Mo., at 
2 CONC approximently 55 years of age.
2 CONT      Exact date of William's death is not presently known.  A claim was 
2 CONC filed against his estate and taken to court on the 12th of September 1882 
2 CONC so he probably died within a short time before that.  His body was 
2 CONC interred at Lamar, Burton County, Missouri.
2 CONT      He married twice.  He married Mary Ann Holmes at Monroe County, VA, 
2 CONC 29June1854.  Mary was born at Monroe County, VA 1824-1826.  Mary was the 
2 CONC daughter of John or W. Holmes and Elizabeth ?. Mary died 16Sept.1854 at 
2 CONC Monroe County, WV, at 30 years of age.  Her body was interred September 
2 CONC 1854 at Sinks Grove, Monroe Co. VA, Mt. Pleasant Cemtery.

2 CONT      He married Emily Jane Tomlinson at Monroe County, VA, 
2 CONC 7September1856.  Emily was born at Monroe Co. VA 4March1832.  Emily is 
2 CONC the daughter of David Tomlinson and Sarah Dodd.  Emily died 28January1916 
2 CONC at Wagner Tn, Charles Mix County, South Dakota, at 83 years of age.
2 CONT      Emily's cause of death was senility of a duration of four months. 
2 CONC Contributed to by a fractured femur.
2 CONT      Her body was interred 2Feb1916, Wagner, Charles Mix County, SD.  She 
2 CONC was listed as a resident in the census report Second Creek Tn, Monroe 
2 CONC Co., WV 19July1870.****She is buried at the ZCBJ cemetery in Wagner, and 
2 CONC listed as daughter of Hamilton Dunsmore on the 1870 census.*****
2 CONT      Emily was living with her son William and his family in Kennedy, 
2 CONC Charles Mix County, South Dakota when the 1910 census was taken.  Also in 
2 CONC the household was her sister Lizzie. ***Lizzie is buried next to Emily in 
2 CONC Wagner Cemetery, SD.****

2 CONC of Artillery (also known as the Monroe Artillery) of the Virginia 
2 CONC Artillery on the 27th of March 1862 at Lewisburg.  This company served in 
2 CONC McLaughlin's Battalion Field Artillery.  He enlisted for a period of 
2 CONC three years.  He was a private.  A Jacob A. Dunsmore was also a member of 
2 CONC Bryan's Company but we are not sure of the relationship at this point.
2 CONT      Muster rolls of the company list him being present April 30th to 
2 CONC August 31, 1863 dated 1 January1864 remarks that William is absent in the

2 CONT William was a charter member of Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church in 
2 CONC Sinks Grove. His brother (?) James and sister Mary were also charter 
2 CONC members. The Mount Pleasant Church was organized in that year when the 
2 CONC Union Church divided into three congregations - Union, Mount Pleasant, 
2 CONC and Centerville.
2 CONT William was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 census at 
2 CONC Rollingsburg District, Monroe County, VA. William Hamilton Dunsmore 
2 CONC enlisted on 27 March 1862 in Lewisburg, Greenbrier Co., WV.
2 CONT William enlisted in Company D of Captain Thomas A. Bryan's Company of 
2 CONC Artillery (also known as the Monroe Artillery) of the Virginia Artillery 
2 CONC on the 27th of March 1862 at Lewisburg. This company served in 
2 CONC McLaughlin's Battalion Field Artillery. He enlisted for a period of three 
2 CONC years. He was a private. A Jacob A. Dunsmore was also a member of Bryan's 
2 CONC Company but we are not sure of the relationship at this point.
2 CONT Muster rolls of the company list him being present April 30th to August 
2 CONC 31, 1863 dated 1 January1864 remarks that William is absent in the 
2 CONC hospital at Parisburg. I have not yet been able to pinpoint where 
2 CONC Parisburg was other than it was somewhere in West Virginia.
2 CONT William was listed in a muster roll April 1864.
2 CONT We do not know where he was or why but he transferred from Bryan's 
2 CONC Company of Artillery to Company D, 26 Battalion Virginia Infantry in 
2 CONC April 1864. This unit was also known as Edgar's Battalion. He appears on 
2 CONC a monthly report of the 1st Brigade, Army of South-Western Virginia, 
2 CONC commanded by Gen. Jno. Echols for April 1864 with the remarks that he 
2 CONC joined by transfer or order.
2 CONT He was imprisioned in Elmira, Chemung Co., NY, 3June 1864 - May 1865.
2 CONT William was taken prisoner on the 3rd of June 1864 at Gaines Farm (also 
2 CONC called Gaines Mills). He arrived at White House/Horn (?), Virginia on the 
2 CONC 11th of June and was transferred to Elmira through Point Lookout, 
2 CONC Maryland on the 12th of July. He remained there until his release on 17 
2 CONC May 1865.
2 CONT He took an oath of allegiance in Elmira, Chemung Co., NY, November 1864.
2 CONT The date William took his oath of allegiance is not dated. However, the 
2 CONC printed title of the page the information is given reads "Roll of 
2 CONC Prisoners of War at Elmira, N.Y., desirous to take the Oath of allegiance 
2 CONC to the United States, November --, 1864". The following is written under 
2 CONC Remarks:
2 CONT "Was conscripted Mch. 22, 1862. He claims to have been a Union man and to 
2 CONC have voted and worked against secession. Was born a cripple having 
2 CONC suffered from a spinal complaint since his birth and claims that he is 
2 CONC unfit for Military service and was only conscripted on account of his 
2 CONC Union principle. He is from Monroe Co., West Va but his family are about 
2 CONC to remove to Wyandotte, Ohio when he (??? can't make out the word) to 
2 CONC go". A second paper entitled "Oath of Allegiance to the United States, 
2 CONC subscribed and sworn to at Almira, NY May 17, 1865" states that his name 
2 CONC appears as a signature to the Oath of Allegiance".
2 CONT His physical description is also given on the Oath. It says he had a dark 
2 CONC complexion, black hair, blue eyes, and was 5-9 1/2.
2 CONT He resided in Charleston, VA May 1865.
2 CONT William's Oath of Allegiance to the United States gives his residence as 
2 CONC Charleston, Virginia.
2 CONT William was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census Second 
2 CONC Creek Tn, Monroe Co, WV. Hamilton's occupation is given as farm hand on 
2 CONC the 1870 census. There is no amount entered in the column for value of 
2 CONC real estate. These two things indicate that he did not own his own farm 
2 CONC but worked for someone else. He owned a modest personal property valued 
2 CONC at $150.
2 CONT William was farming when the 1880 census was taken.
2 CONT William Hamilton Dunsmore moved to before September 1882 near Lemar, 
2 CONC Barton County, MO.
2 CONT William and Emily moved their family to Missouri sometime between October 
2 CONC 1872 and June 1880. They apparently first lived in Lebanon Township in 
2 CONC Laclede County before moving to Barton County sometime before September 
2 CONC 1882.

2 CONC County, Missouri. We searched the census records for 1860, 1870, 1880

2 CONC Missouri 1900 June 7, pg 272 line 143-147 an entry for Joseph Q. Dunsmore 
2 CONC born Oct 1872 in WVa and wife Alberta with three children. Entered onto

2 CONC researching I found in the 1870 census records for Second Creek Township, 
2 CONC Monroe County, West Virginia a listing for Hamilton Dunsmore 42, wife 
2 CONC Emily 37: children; William 7, Rebecca S. 9, Sarah E. 18, Carrie E. 2, 
2 CONC and Newton T.2/12months.  A copy of the census record is included in the 
2 CONC files.  It turns out that his name is William Hamilton Dunsmore.

2 CONT      William died before 12September1882 at Barton County, Mo., at 
2 CONC approximently 55 years of age.
2 CONT      Exact date of William's death is not presently known.  A claim was 
2 CONC filed against his estate and taken to court on the 12th of September 1882 
2 CONC so he probably died within a short time before that.  His body was 
2 CONC interred at Lamar, Burton County, Missouri.
2 CONT      He married twice.  He married Mary Ann Holmes at Monroe County, VA, 
2 CONC 29June1854.  Mary was born at Monroe County, VA 1824-1826.  Mary was the 
2 CONC daughter of John or W. Holmes and Elizabeth ?. Mary died 16Sept.1854 at 
2 CONC Monroe County, WV, at 30 years of age.  Her body was interred September 
2 CONC 1854 at Sinks Grove, Monroe Co. VA, Mt. Pleasant Cemtery.
2 CONT      Date on cemetery transcription is September 1851.
2 CONT      He married Emily Jane Tomlinson at Monroe County, VA, 
2 CONC 7September1856.  Emily was born at Monroe Co. VA 4March1832.  Emily is 
2 CONC the daughter of David Tomlinson and Sarah Dodd.  Emily died 28January1916 
2 CONC at Wagner Tn, Charles Mix County, South Dakota, at 83 years of age.
2 CONT      Emily's cause of death was senility of a duration of four months. 
2 CONC Contributed to by a fractured femur.
2 CONT      Her body was interred 2Feb1916, Wagner, Charles Mix County, SD.  She 
2 CONC was listed as a resident in the census report Second Creek Tn, Monroe 
2 CONC Co., WV 19July1870.****She is buried at the ZCBJ cemetery in Wagner, and 
2 CONC listed as daughter of Hamilton Dunsmore on the 1870 census.*****
2 CONT      Emily was living with her son William and his family in Kennedy, 
2 CONC Charles Mix County, South Dakota when the 1910 census was taken.  Also in 
2 CONC the household was her sister Lizzie. ***Lizzie is buried next to Emily in 
2 CONC Wagner Cemetery, SD.****
2 CONT      By the 1910 census one of Emily's six children had died but I don't 
2 CONC know which one.  Because the census states she had six children I have 
2 CONC combined Rebecca and Susan as being one person which the records seem to 
2 CONC indicate.  However, we do not yet know who Sarah E.'s mother was.  It 
2 CONC could have been Emily or it could have been William's first wife.  If 
2 CONC Sarah was Mary Ann's child then it would appear that Rebecca and Susan 
2 CONC really were two different people.
2 CONT      William was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census at 39 
2 CONC Division, Monroe Co., VA.
2 CONT      William was working as a farm laborer.
2 CONT      William was listed as a member of a church at Union, Monroe Co., WV,

2 CONT      A name transcribed and typed as Witt Dunsmore was enrolled at Union 
2 CONC Presbyterian church in 1852.  I think this was probably William.

2 CONC A. and Andrew L.) appeared on a petition to the legislature of Virginia 
2 CONC regarding the granting of some kind of licenses (liqour perhaps).

2 CONC and 1776.  The area at that time was part of Montgomery or Botetourt 
2 CONC County, Virginia.  Surname spelling variations are noted.
2 CONT Shows up on the 1787 taxroll:  Taxpayer; Amherst Parish, Amherst Co, Va; 
2 CONC James appears on "An Accounting of the Name....together with a listing of 
2 CONC their .. cattle.."  There are no numbers in the columns for the numbers 
2 CONC of tithable males just a listing for three cattle.  There is also a 
2 CONC notation that he was tax free.
2 CONT Deed; 1795  Grantee; The Sinks, Greenbrier Co, Va; James was granted 169 
2 CONC acres of land at The Sinks
2 CONT Taxroll;  20 May 1796  Taxpayer; Greenbrier Co, VA, James' name appeared 
2 CONC on the personal property list of Greenbrier County.  He was taxed on 
2 CONC three horses.
2 CONT Taxroll  1799;  Taxpayer; Monroe County was formed in 1799.  It was 
2 CONC previously a portion of Greenbrier County.  James appears on the first 
2 CONC tax roll of the new county.
2 CONT Taxroll 1800; Taxpayer   An abstract of the 1800 personal property rolls 
2 CONC of Monroe County show that the household consisted on the one tithable 
2 CONC person (that being James) and that he owned three horses at the time.
2 CONT VOTED 03 Nov. 1800  Voter; James voted in the Presidential election 
2 CONC (according to Morton's History of Monroe County, however, the election 
2 CONC did not actually take place until the third of December).  While we can't 
2 CONC know if he voted Democratic (Thomas Jefferson & Aaron Burr) or Federalist 
2 CONC (John Adams & Charles Pinckney) we do know that 155 votes were cast  for 
2 CONC the Democrats and only 42 for Federalists.  Jefferson won the election.
2 CONT      According to an explaination of the list of voters where James' name 
2 CONC was found "The list is of interest because the suffrage at that time was 
2 CONC very much restricted.  The voter was a person of some property and 
2 CONC consequence".

2 CONT      At this point in the research process (July 1999) we can be very 
2 CONC certain that Newton Turner Dunsmore's parents were William Hamilton 
2 CONC Dunsmore and Emily Jane Tomlinson.  Initial research shows that the 
2 CONC Tomlinson family goes back many generations in Amherst County, Virginia. 
2 CONC The Tomlinson family research will be picked up at a later date.
2 CONT      Newton Turner's paternal grandparents were William and Mary (Mollie) 
2 CONC Wanstaff Dunsmore.  We are pretty certain of this but Mollie is still a 
2 CONC bit of a mystery.  It appears she died relatively young and that William 
2 CONC then remarried.
2 CONT      Oren Morton's 'A History of Monroe County, West Virginia" states 
2 CONC that William (Newton's grandfather) was the son of James and Elizabeth 
2 CONC Dunsmore.  I do not believe this is true and much further research needs 
2 CONC to be done to determine his true parentage.  I believe it is much more 
2 CONC likely that he is the grandson of James and Elizabeth.  Possibly the son 
2 CONC of another generation William.
2 CONT      Despite the question of William's parentage, there is little doubt 
2 CONC that the family does decend from James and Elizabeth.  They settled in 
2 CONC the Sinks Grove area of Monroe County, West Virginia about 1770.  Where 
2 CONC they were before that is not known.  Nor at this point is it known how 
2 CONC long the Dunsmore family has been in America.
2 CONT      Morton gives us this small clue to the origins of the family 
2 CONC "Dunsmore, also spelled Dunmore and Dinsmore, is a Scotch name and means 
2 CONC "hill by a heath".  John, the ancestor of the American branch, ran away 
2 CONC to Ireland in 1667 in consequence of some treatment he considered 
2 CONC humiliating.  He attained the age of 99".  There were probably three or 
2 CONC four generations between this ancestor John and James.
2 CONT      The research continues but it is hoped that the following very rough 
2 CONC draft will begin to bring your Dunsmore family history to light...
