We think that Hugh Ector (the very first one) had a brother named Samuel Ector; both were in NC about the same time and of about the same age. This hasn't been proven, but hoping to do so! One of Samuel's descendants is Phil Mitchell, whom you may have heard from also. He has some postings on the familyhistory.com website, too. So nice to find another Ector cousin. Take care and best regards, Jan Murff Melton

> son of Hugh Walton Ector and Dorothy Duncan, was reared in Meriwether
County,
> Georgia and educated in LaGrange, Georgia and at Center College in

> Kentucky. He studied law and was admitted to the Georgia Bar in 1844.
Was in the Georgia legislature in 1845. He came to Texas in 1849 and settled in
Henderson, Rusk County. He later spent some time in California.
Returning to Texas he studied law and was admitted to the Texas bar in 1851. Was a
member of the Texas legislature in 1855-1856.
He practiced law at Henderson until the beginning of the Civil War in
1861.
He enlisted in the Confederate States Army at Henderson, along with his 14
year
old son, Walton Hugh Ector, and was mustered into the service at Dallas a
few
days later.
Matt was elected Adjutant with the rank of Lieutenant of the 3rd Texas
Cavalry
Regiment, Colonel E. Greer commanding, and was promoted to Brigadier
General
> August 23, 1862. He served throughout the War until he lost a leg at the
Battle
of Atlanta (Peachtree Creek) on July 24, 1864. After recovering from the
loss
of his leg he reported for duty and was appointed Major General of the
Confederate Army and assigned to the command of the troops at Mobile about
the
time of the surrender. He returned to Texas and resumed the practice of
law at
Marshall. In 1866, he was elected Judge of the Sixth
Judicial district, holding that office for one year when he was deposed by
Federal Judge
Reynolds as one of the Obstructionist.
> In 1867, He resumed the practice of law at Marshall. In 1874 he was
appointed
Judge of the Seventh Judicial District by Governor Coke.
>
When the Court of Appeals was created he was elected Judge of that
Tribunal in
1878 and was chosen by his colleagues as its Presiding Judge which
position he
held until his death which occurred during the session of the court at
Tyler on
October 29, 1879. He was buried at Marshall by the Judges of the Court of
Appeals, the Justices of the Supreme Court, the Commissioner of Appeals
and
members and attendants of the bar of Tyler.
He was a member of the Old School Presbyterian Church of which he was an
Elder.
He was married three times, first to Miss Mary Louisa Phillips of Georgia
on
June 7, 1842. She died in 1848. There were two children by this
marriage, Mary
Jane Ector (who I believe was know as "Jennie", probably a nickname.) She
married a Mr. Vaught and lived in McLennan County, Texas. I have no
information
as to the date of birth or death or o her family, if any.) And a son,
Walton.
Hugh Ector (my father) who was born in Meriwether County, Georgia on July
3,
1847. He died in Texarkana, Texas on December 267, 1882.
His second marriage was to Miss Letitia Graham of Kentucky, in Rusk
County,
Texas on August 6, 1851, as she is listed in the Rusk County census on
that
date. There was one child by this marriage, Letitia Ector. ( I know
nothing of
her.)
His third wife was Miss Sally P. Chew of Kentucky. They married in
Meridian,
Mississippi in 1864. There were four children by this marriage.
Helen Ector, m to Mr. Hutchinson of Shreveport, Louisiana
Walker Ector
William C. Ector
Annie Ector, m Ruffin G. Pleasant, subsequently Governor of Louisiana.
The above material from:

> (2) M. D. Ector married second to Letitia M. Graham in Rusk County Texas,
6th
Aug. 1851. An MD Graham was associated with Matthew Duncan Ector in many
ways in
Henderson, Texas and might have been a brother to Letitia M. Graham Ector.
They
had one daughter, Letitia, born 1852, listed in 1870 census of Harrison
County,
Texas. Letitia M. Graham Ector died in 1859 in Rusk County, Texas.
>
A child by his first marriage to Louisa Phillips was Walton H. Ector. He
was
not mustered officially in the Confederate States Army. M. D. Ector
always
spoke of "his small son" or "his young son" in such an anxious and tender
way,
in his reports on battles. Walton H. Ector did apply and received a
pension(or
rather his wife did) on his service of going through the War with his
Father,
no rank, mustering in records, etc. - just accompanied his father.
According to
the Pension Record, Walton H. Ector and Ada Ector were married 12 October
1870
in Bowie County, Texas. She was born 3 January 1856. He died 26 December
1882.
Although I have corresponded with Texarkana officials, I have never
received any
reply or help on this.
(Information by Joseph F. Ector Sr. Houston, Texas on June 1, 1957, shows
that
Walton Hugh Ector born in Meriwether County, Georgia July 3, 1847, married
Ada
Florence battle. For children and descendants of Walton H. Ector and Ada
Florence Battle, see THE BATTLE BOOK and supplement. Joseph F. Ector Sr.
is a
son of this couple.)
> (3) Sallie Pinkerton Chew was his third wife. He married her in Meridian,
> Mississippi in 1864. She was born in Kentucky about 1841 according to the
1870
Harrison County census. She was the daughter of Dr. William P. Chew of
Meridian. I have written Meridian officials, but they replied that their
city
and county records burned in the War - no record of Chews found to date.
Ector
was in Mississippi until about February 1864 - then Brigade transferred to
Alabama- then to Atlanta Campaign in May 1864, until his wound 27 July
1864.
Pension application of his son, Walton H. Ector, stated he returned to
Meridian
after his wounding at Atlanta and married Sallie P. chew - so that would
make it
sometime between August, 1864 and December 1864.
After the War was over, Matthew and Sallie Ector returned to Rusk County,
Texas
where he was elected District Judge in 1866, but was removed the following
year.
In February 1868 they moved to Marshall, Texas and on March 14, 1868 his
announcement card as an Attorney and Counselor at law appeared in the
Marshall
TEXAS REPUBLICAN newspaper.
