Dream of: 18 February 2006 (2) "Cyrano De Bergerac"

I was watching a movie in a theater. I had entered late and I wasn't sure how much I had missed. This scene seemed to be taking place in a police station. A heavy-set police officer was sitting at a table and listening to a tape recording of some exquisite poetry. As the poetry played, someone else in the background also began reciting the poetry along with the tape recording. The room was dark, so the face of the person reciting in the background couldn't be seen. The police officer stood up to see who was reciting the poetry, and he discovered his deputy was reciting. As soon as the police officer saw the deputy, the deputy stopped reciting and walked out of the room. Almost immediately I realized this movie was a version of Cyrano de Bergerac.

The scene shifted to a man in a cathedral. He appeared to be coming out of a confession booth, where he had also been reciting poetry. The fellow looked vaguely like the actor Steve Martin (husky and in his early 40s); then I realized he actually was Steve Martin. I recalled Martin had once before played in a version of Cyrano de Bergerac, and I concluded Martin had also played in this version. I tried to remember the story of Cyrano de Bergerac, but I couldn't. I was confused as I tried to recall what role Martin had played in the movie I had previously seen. Martin seemed to have a long nose in this movie, which now appeared to be taking place in the original time period of the piece: in the 1500s or 1600s in France. The costumes and the cinematography were excellent.

As Martin walked out of the cathedral, a second man (in his mid 50s) followed Martin. The second fellow - slender and effete - appeared to be wearing a wig pilled high on his head. The fellow had heard Martin reciting the poetry and now the fellow wanted Martin to help him pursue a woman in whom he was interested.

This all seemed confusing to me because I couldn't remember who did what in the movie. The roles now somehow seemed reversed, especially since Martin had the long nose. As the two men walked down the stairs in front of the cathedral, I tried to remember the plot.
