Dream of: 26 October 1997 (2) "How Green Was My Valley"

While Carolina and I were at a party with 30-40 other couples, I wondered what it would be like if some of the couples started swapping partners. We were in a large, well furnished room, in a spacious home. I was sitting in a wooden rocking chair, and I noticed that Carolina had walked over and sat down next to a man on a couch, off to my right. The fellow was sitting with another woman, and Carolina, looking young and pretty, sat down on the other side of him. I kept my eye on her, still wondering if some of the couples might start swapping, and she might end up with the fellow next to her.

A comely woman with frizzy black hair walked up to me on my left. She seemed a bit tipsy as she asked, "May I sit here, sir?"

She was referring to the space on the wooden floor to my left. I answered, "Sure." And then, pointing to my lap, I added, "Or you can sit here."

She unabashedly walked right up to me, set down on my left leg with her legs between my legs, and laid her shoulder back on my left chest. Clearly she had had too much to drink. We talked for a few minutes and I finally asked, "What's your name?"

She said, "Mein Name ....." She spoke her name, but I didn't hear it because I was too struck by the way she had said the words "Mein Name." I knew the words meant "my name," but I was uncertain what language she was speaking. I repeated the words back to her in an inquiring way, as if to ask where she was from. She replied that she was from "Welshland." It took me a moment to realize that she was talking about Wales. I found that fact quite interesting. I told her that I had had never been to Wales. But sometimes when I hadn't been to a place, I tried to think of movies I had seen which had been located in the place. I told her that I could only think of one movie which I had seen which had taken place in Wales: the movie The Man Who Went Up A Mountain And Came Down A Hill.

But then I stopped and thought further. I realized I had once seen another movie that I thought had taken place in Wales. I couldn't remember the name of the black and white movie (How Green Was My Valley). But I remembered it had been produced in the early 1940s and I could still remember many of the scenes about the movie, how much of it had dealt with mines and miners.

I again glanced over at Carolina. I now realized the woman sitting on my lap was the wife of the man sitting next to Carolina. I was uncertain what was going to happen next, but it was beginning to look as if we might indeed be going to swap partners for a while.
