Dream of: 09 January 1996 (2) "Speeding Up My Heart"

I was standing in the living room of the Gallia County Farmhouse. I had returned to Ohio because I needed to take a test concerning my law license. It wasn't completely clear what the test was about, but I knew if I didn't take it, my law license would be suspended.

I was in a hurry to leave, but I still needed to eat something. My mother was in the room, and when I asked her what was in the House to eat, she told me I would need to go to the store to buy something. I was surprised and angry to hear that she hadn't brought anything into the House to eat. Here I had traveled all the way from Texas to Ohio -- the least she could have done was to have some food here. I pulled a glove off my hand, threw in down in an armchair, and cried, "I can't believe it!"

As I threw down the glove, I noticed it was odd because it looked like a gray sock instead of a glove. But I didn't linger thinking about it, because my attention was drawn to my sister, who was also in the room. My sister asked if I would be able to also bring her back something to eat if I went to a store. My mother broke into the conversation and said I wouldn't have time to do that. My mother then turned and began walking up the stairs. As she left she said, "The cancer is speeding up my heart."

Only then did I finally take a closer look at her as she proceeded up the stairs. She was dressed in a long blue flannel night robe, and she looked as if she had lost much weight. Indeed, as I followed her up the stairs, I noticed how frail she seemed. She walked into the upstairs front bedroom, lay down in the bed on her side, and covered up with covers. She apparently didn't want to talk anymore.

I finally grasped what she was talking about. I knew she had had some small spots of skin cancer which had been removed. But now obviously the cancer had spread to her heart. She was clearly quite ill indeed.
