Dream of: 05 December 1994 (3) "Role Reversal"
I intended to return to college at The Ohio State University. I had one more semester to finish to graduate. I was in Chillicothe, about 60 kilometers south of Columbus. Sitting at a table with a man, I asked him if he knew where I could take a bus. I followed him as he stood, walked a few feet and pointed down the road. There I could see a bus pulling away as the man said, "It just left."
I decided to go to the area where the bus had been and wait for the next one. Since there was a highway there, I could try to hitchhike at the same time. I walked down there. I was carrying a cassette player about 25 centimeters by 15 centimeters by 5 centimeters in size and a black magic marker. I was wearing a watch with a gold colored metal bank on my left wrist. I was wearing new clothes and thought I looked good.
As I approached the area along a ramp leading to the highway, I noticed some other people hitchhiking. But they were up so high on the side of the ramp, I doubted anyone in a car could even see them. I walked closer to the front of the ramp where another group of people was hitchhiking. I passed them and kept going to the front of the ramp. I quickly made a sign which said "Columbus" and held it out.
The first car which passed me slowed down, as if whoever was inside was checking me out. It looked as if three people were in the front and one in the back (all about 20 years old). When I ran up to the side of the car, I could tell they were looking me over. I was going to tell them I was okay. They opened up a rear door. A female was sitting in the back. The seat next to me was raised; the woman put it down so I could get in and sit on it. She scooted over to the other side.
We started riding along without anyone saying anything. I thought I should probably ask where they were going; but I concluded they were probably also going to Ohio State. They looked like students. So I just sat back and thought about what I was going to be doing at college.
I was going to be taking four or five courses. I would be taking an advanced course in French. That would be good, because when Carolina returned from France, we could begin speaking French with each other. I was also going to take a course in ancient history, as well as a theater course. I hadn't been involved in theater in a long time. One requirement in the course was to take part in a play.
One good method of learning lines for a play was role reversal. When we rehearsed the play, it would be good to sometimes switch roles and play someone else's character, even if we had to read the lines when we did it. By reversing roles, we would have a better understanding of the other person's role in the play.
At the same time, I was apprehensive about taking part in a play. I hadn't been involved in a play in a long time, and I questioned whether I would be able to learn all my lines. What would happen if someone missed a line in the middle of an actual play? One would have to be prepared for such an event and know what to do. It was going to be difficult, but I still felt I should be able to do it. I would just have to work hard to learn the lines.
It seemed strange to be going back to college. But it was only going to be for a few months; it would probably work out well.
