Dream of: 17 November 1994 "Expensive Comic Books"

While I was in the House in Patriot, a fellow living in the old Swiver's house across the street came over to see me. He brought some comic books which I knew were valuable and which I was thinking of buying. He had a set of four comic books which featured a super hero. The series had only appeared a short time before being canceled. The fellow wanted $50,000 for the comic books. I wrote out a check for $50,000 and gave it to him. He left.

I began looking at the comic books. They were in very good condition, but they weren't mint. Slowly I realized I had paid far too much for the comics, and I regretted what I had done. My mother was also in the room, and she could tell I was sorry about what I had done. Perhaps I could go over to the fellow, cancel the deal, and get my check back. If he wouldn't give the check back, I could call the bank and cancel payment. I hated the thought of all the problems this affair was going to cause. I only had about $100,000, and I had spent half of it for four comic books!

I stood, walked across the street and went inside to where the fellow was. I quickly explained to him that I wasn't going to be able to go through with the deal and that I wanted my check back. I gave his comic books back to him; when I saw the check in his hand, I grabbed it. I immediately saw that he had torn off the top, right corner of the check where I had written the amount of $50,000. He said he could still cash that little piece of the check. I knew he couldn't. My signature wasn't on that part of the check, nor did it say to whom the check was made. But even though I knew he couldn't cash that piece, I might still call the bank and cancel payment. Still sorry for what had happened, I turned and headed back to the House.
