While traveling through a strange city, I stopped by a university where a play was about to be performed in an auditorium. The play was supposed to begin at 3 o'clock, and I arrived just before it started. I looked through the open door and could see women seated at a table selling tickets. I wondered where I should sit -- right in front or farther back. I decided I would try to find a place in the front. Nearby I heard a man talking about plays and playwrights. He rattled off the names of several men as if he were thoroughly acquainted with their works. I thought he must have indeed read a great deal to be able to talk so knowingly about them.
