While sitting in the living room of the Gallia County Farmhouse, I looked out the window and saw a car had pulled up below, in front of the Farmhouse. As the people started piling out of the car, I realized they were my relatives and my first cousin Jimmy was among them. Quickly deciding I didn't want to see anyone right now, I slipped out of the Farmhouse. I headed up the hill behind the Farmhouse, thinking I would go to my Cabin.

When I started out, I was carrying a sledge hammer and an ax. I put the sledge hammer down beside the path I was taking, and continued on with the ax. As I passed a tree, I hit it a couple times with the ax to cut a small piece out of it. I wanted to leave a mark so I could find my way back. I also wanted to leave a mark so if someone had to come and look for me they could find me. I specifically thought my father might get worried if I was absent for a long while, and would come looking for me.

The main reason I wanted to get away was because I had recently discovered I might have AIDS. I was depressed by the news; I simply didn't want to be around anyone right now.
