I was in a large room with a ceiling perhaps 20 meters high. Only gradually did I realize I was in a room of the Gay Street House. I had bought a large ring with six diamonds for a woman to whom I was married. But before I could give the ring to the woman, my ex-wife Louise walked into the room and asked me what I was holding in my clenched hand. I showed Louise the ring, let her hold it, and lied that I had bought it for her. When she tried it on, I pointed out that the diamonds weren't real, and that they didn't have much brilliance. She liked the ring anyway, but finally I told her I wasn't going to give it to her because it was too big for her, and I took it back from her.

Jon and Cathy were sitting in the room, listening to everything I said, but I mistook them for Clifford and Peggy. They knew I hadn't really bought the ring for Louise, but they just listened without saying anything. As Louise walked out of the room, I thought to myself, "Oh what tangled webs we weave, when first we decide to deceive."
