I was on the Gallia County Farm with my step-grandfather Clarence, who had rounded up about 20 of his cattle. Either he was planning to kill some and butcher them there, or he was planning to take some to market. At any rate, he began hitting them in the head with a hammer. About 15 escaped and headed back into the hills. Five were dazed by the hammer and lay down on the ground. After awhile he herded four of those into a barn. One became recalcitrant and refused to get up. So he went over and started hitting the cow in the neck with the hammer. She still wouldn't stand up.
