Artists Statement

This energy efficeint car is the mode of transportation back to the 1970's. The speedometer on the dashboard is stuck at 55MPH and gas gauge is stuck at Empty due to the oil embargo and long lines at gas station. The steering wheel is a peace sign from the Vietnam war and the horn is the everpresent Smiley.

The Microprocessor is a new innovation as are the Bar Codes and Soft Contact Lenses. Ballon Angioplasty is shown through several balloons strung on a heart, one of which is a disco bead.

Pocket Calculators and the Remote Control Cable TV are other advances. Beta and VHS VCRs are devoloped as are Test Tube Babies, Childproof Caps for pill bottles. Post-it-Notes and Pong.

The Walkman, 8 inch Floppies and Compact Discs are developed as well.

Glass Fiber Optics used pulses of Laswer light to send voice, video and computer messages through fibers made of glass.

The left side mirror reflects one of the biggest innovations, the Home Personal Computer. The right mirror reflects Hip Replacement Surgery. The rear view mirror reflects CAT Scans and NMRIs. It is being held by the twisted cord that represents genetic engineering.

Below the rear view mirror is a skeleton in a coffin, representing the Death of Small Pox.

The Supersonic Transport, the Concord and developments in space are shown looking out through the windshiled of the car. These include the Mariner 9 (green) that went to Mars, the first spacecraft to orbit another planet and the Viking 2 that actually landed on Mars. The Skylabspacestation, Pioneer(orange) which went to Venus, Mariner 10, the first picture taking spacecraft to view Venus and the only probe to Mercury, Pioneer II (gray) flew closes to Jupiter, and discovered Saturn's additional satelite and ring and Voyager 2 (silver) discovered a rocky ring around Jupiter, details of Saturn's rings, flew by Uranus and Neptune.

Artist's Statement......This is the result of listening to every 70's album in "our" collection, with a song title beginning with the letter J. My desperate quest for inspiration. Paul McCartney's 1970 song titled Junk really struck a chord. My husband and I go round and round about his philosphy of one man's junk, is another man's treasure. The result of 27 years of collection. As I worked with these photos, embellishments and 3 words....junk, memories, and treasure their relationship took on another meaning and our societies lack of placing importance on recycling. Materials: 100% cotton fabrics, hand-dyed, discharged, painted and commercial. Machine quilted using rayon and metallic threads. Embellishments are hand-me-down objects attached using garbage bag twist ties.........Jan Girod.
