Johns Poetry Corner

When I was in school I detested literature, especially having
to memorize the poetry. Remember "The Tale Of The Ancient
Marinar?" I think some of the stuff they had you to memorize
back then would turn anybody against literature.

Then about 45 years ago a school buddy of mine who had moved
away two years before came back to town for a visit. While here
he gave me the following poem. It had such a unique rhyme to it
that I memorized it with just a few readings.

Over the years I never forgot that verse and as I reached middle
age I decided that I could write verse as good or better than that.
So, taking pen and pad in hand I came up with the verses you
find on this website with my name attached to them and this poem
is the one you can blame all the others on.

One Dark Night

One dark night when it was light,
Two dead boys got up to fight.

They stood back to back and faced each other,
Drew their swords and shot each other.

Now, if you do not believe this tale I tell,
Just ask the blind man who lives down the road,

For he saw it all as he talked to his deaf and dumb daughter
Over the disconnected telephone

And stuck his peg leg out the closed window
To see if it was cold.
