Shifting

by Merideth Chaffin

Exhausted but can't sleep
Roll over in bed
Pull the covers over my head
Try to get comfortable.
Lay awake watching the shadows shift and turn
Like thought patterns.
Always moving away and returning to the same point...
Try to sleep.
So many thoughts, shifting and turning
Stories, work, chores, plans,
Things I don't want to think about
Feelings I don't want to feel,
Especially not tonight, alone again tonight...
But every road leads to him
Every thought pattern weaves his name
No matter what
Obsession isn't a choice.
The lacework of shadows and clouds on the cieling twist
And so do I.
