OUR COMMUNITY

On Saturday, March 11, 2000 the Sharpstown Time Capsule was opened. Over 200 people from Houston and from several other cities and states were here to watch the opening. There was a short ceremony with comments from some of our pioneer residents, Judge Robert Baum and Keith Thayer. Judge Baum told about how he and his neighbors cut the grass on the surrounding vacant lots so their children could have a playground. Keith Thayer told about how the time capsule was rescued and moved to the park. Dan Ammerman, a long time TV personality, was our master of ceremonies. Ray Driscoll, our former City Councilman, made a few comments. Mark Ellis, our new City Councilman had his nephew, Terrance McConn, read the proclamation from Mayor Lee P. Brown. The opening of the metal box which was holding the contents of the capsule was somewhat of a disappointment. The contents had been wet and some of them were damaged. We are hoping that a few letters might be salvaged. After the ceremony and the opening there was a reception with refreshments inside the Sharpstown Park Community Building. The sandwiches and soft drinks were furnished by Toni Franklin of the Sharpstown Center Mall. This was a nice event for Sharpstown and the weather really worked in our favor. Thanks to the Sharpstown Civic Association, The Sharpstown Park Advisory Council, The Walter Branch Library, The City of Houston Park and Recreation Department and the folks at Sharpstown Park for making this a splendid, memorable event.
