Adrial, Spain ~~ I'm from Madrid, Spain. I started collecting when I was 21, my brother didn't know what gift he could gave me for my birthday, he went into a Shop and saw a Barbie Scarlet O´hara with the green dress, the one Mattel released in 1994. And when he gave her to me It was love at first sight, soon I opened my old Barbie Box with my forgoten childhood ladies, "Peaches and Cream, pink and pretty.." I put them on nice Oscar de la renta outfits and well.. "Collecting worm" bite me. :) As I am a student with occasional part time jobs, I can´t buy as many Barbies as I would love to. I have two wishlists, one called "Barbies I can have" those with reasonable prices for me lol and "dream doll list" where I put for example Madame DuBarbie, Porcelain Ballerinas or Faberges. Now, Im 24 years I have around 35 more or less, and some playlines. And I also customize, when I have time to, of course. ~~ I love period costumes, victorian themed dolls for example. I also love fantasy dolls, like fae, angels...żmy favourite doll?..Hard to say, I love them all. :) But those I played with when I was a kid are so special for me.~~ Collecting in Spain is quite difficult, we have to order everything to shops outside Spain, although we can buy a few collector edition dolls here, prizes are soo excesive. Most of the time It´s cheaper to order abroad and even more If we order a lot of things so we can save on shipping. Its something quite usual for us to join and order multiple items. The worst thing is that sometimes dolls are stopped at customs and we have to pay a lot of taxes, so let´s say collecting in Spain it´s like and adventure!! lol ~~ I´ve been around the board more than two years, since summer 99, and I love it, because I have learnt a lot about dolls just reading the posts, I love the pics people posts and above all I love that I always find help here. No matter what I have asked, always there had been a helping hand. :) ~~ One of the first dolls I ordered from the USA via ebay was Harpist Angel, when the doll arrived, shipper was intact but doll´s box was seriously damaged, no COA, doll loose inside the box (wings where slightly torn) and the worst, the harp was missing. The seller never belived me, and of course did not returned the money back. After some serious discussions with her via email, I just gave up and decided to fix doll´s hair, after all It was mine and she was my dream doll then. I fixed her wings and bought a little toy wood harp for her. Well, one day I post on the board I was searching the harp, was one of my first posts, some time after a lady called Shelly Butler wrote to me, few days later I recieved the original Harp for free!. I could not belive it!. So, Mrs Butler, if you read this, thanks a lot again for your help. :) 9/18/02

Amy in So.Ca ~~Hi everyone! My love for Barbies started when I was a little girl and I played with them every day. I'd freaked out one time when friend came over and tried to cut one fo my Barbies hair! :o) I started collecting in about 1989 when I got the 2nd Holiday Barbie, and I've been collecting ever since. My favorites are Madame Du, Pink Splendor, and Billions of Dreams. The two that I really didn't like at first but loved once I saw them in person were Symphony in Chiffon and the Rendezvous Masquerade Barbies. I'm a stay at home mom of one daughter who just turned 4 and is a handful! I love coming to Vicky's and have met so many nice Barbie collectors here. Thanks for reading! :o) 9/18/02

Andrea in CA~~Let me start by saying that I am no writer, or wiz on the English language!LOL ;0)~~ I have ALWAYS loved Barbie!! From the begining I have always owned a Barbie-never been without her. First I got her for birthdays and gifts, then I had to do chores to earn a Barbie (YUP, I WORKED FOR BARBIE!! LOL), now I am able to buy my very own barbie's. YEHAW!!!~~I can't explain how much I adored my barbie's when I was a little girl. I remember the times when my parents would reward me for the work I had done or the grades I had earned with a Barbie. I would find the very best doll; once it was Barbie and the Sensations, then it was Cool Times Barbie, and so many more from there. I would open my Barbie in the back of my parents van on the way home from the store and make sure that all the little peices and parts stayed in tacked in the little baggies (like I do now!). After I was done playing with them I would put them right back in the boxes they came with. I really can't remember a time that I didn't play barbie's!~~I started collecting the high end and collectible Barbies in about 1997 (I was about 20 years old). I saw an ad in the TRU paper advertising that if you spent $75 on barbie you get a free "My Fair Lady Doll". I bought the collector edition Glinda the Good Witch. We won't discuss what Barbie I got free, because I didn't. We'll just say that I really don't like TRU (and that's putting it nicely). Anyhoo-From then on I went crazy! Buying everything from pink box Barbies, to fashion avenue's. Then I found out about the Toy Clubs!! I was HOOKED! My very first high end Barbie was Mackie's Madame Du-which got me hooked on the mackie's, buying everyone I could get my hands on. Five years and 400 Barbie's later, I think I am finally comming to my senses. I have sold off most of the fashion avenue's, and pink box dolls. However, I still buy 2 or 3 of each doll. Why? I will never know. 9/18/02

Andrew in Mtl~~Hi all fellow Barbie lovers. my name is andrew and i live in montrčal, quebec, canada. i played barbies with all the girls on my street. this was late 70's. i wish i hadn't given them all to my little sister who destroyed them today. my Superstar Barbie with sequined cap & Ballerina were my favorites. i must of had 3 or 4 of those Ballerinas'. i kept pulling her crown off. lol. then got upset and got another. hehehehe alas there gone...sob sob! lol. my barbie bug started agian in 1999 on a trip to south beach, fl. my 'partner' bought me 40th anniversary and a publix special edition valentines xoxoxo Barbie. that opened the flood gates to my mania! through many canadain & US dealers and internet i have well over 200 now. i like to collect in series CE, SE, & LE. avon, designer, fashion, holiday, repros' & especially Silkies. i couldn't help myself from getting them all in multiples so i can play and redress them. now the problem is Vintage Clothing!!! i only have a 2 Vintage sheaths for my 'girls'. rather easy to find 'cruise stripes'/'roman holiday' & olive dot sheath. they fit the Silkies so well. i wish FA's were made that way. what it must have been like to be able to buy these little outfits back in the glory days. i feel funny saying that because for me i got my first barbie in 1978. i have other interestes aswell. we must be well rounded. (mom pipeing in) lol. such as gardening, movies, working out, traveling, planning parties & SHoPPiNG! i also speak french. Montreal is a french speaking city so i had no choice. it's a transferable skill. i'm not complaining. if you're still with me... thanks for letting me share:) i love hearing other peoples' stories. 9/18/02

Angel in AZ~~As a kid, I didn't play with Barbie, but with cheaper knock-offs that were available in The Netherlands (Cindy and Fleur). In 1999 a friend, Brian, gave me "Dutch Barbie" from the Dolls of the World collection when I was visiting the US. It was just a way for him to tease me more for being a Dutch milk maid. I kinda liked the Barbie, but thought she was a little bit stupid too: nobody in the Netherlands was wearing clothes like that anymore, and those braids! The text on the box just made me laugh, I thought it was so silly. BUT I did fall in love with the guy who got me the Barbie.~~About a half year later I moved to the US to live with Brian. And then a whole new Barbie world opened up to me: Barbie is more than a big smile, blond hair and pink clothes! I have always been interested in cultural variety in the world and I love to travel (another hobby of mine that reflects this interest of what's going on in other countries is my stamp collection. It's so cool to see what every country wants to celebrate on their stamps). So when I saw the Moroccan Barbie at a store, I was hooked to the Dolls of the World series! In two years my collection grew so hard I can hardly believe it (I think I have about 170 Barbies now). Aside from the Dolls of the World collection I now also collect other culture related Barbies (like Yuming, Kebaya and Mackie Goddesses) and historical dolls (Great Eras, Fashions of the 20th Century etc.). BTW, I am a deboxer, and I usually buy deboxed/displayed Barbies to keep my collection affordable. For a long time I had a $15 maximum for a doll, including shipping, but that seems to be impossible nowadays. The more expensive dolls Brian bought for me. ~~ I started customizing Barbies because I thought that some dolls weren't done too well, and others that I wanted in my collection, Mattel would never make. I thought that Kenyan Barbie could be done much better. So now I got three Kenyan women and a man, made after pictures that I took on my travels. More Stevens are waiting to get dressed up. Brian has always been very supportive of my Barbie collecting and customizing, he himself is a 1/6th scale collector (mainly Japanese and Scottish). He build shelves to display all my dolls, and he makes great accessories for my girls. For instance, my OOAK Scottish Barbie has a bagpipe, and OOAK Sri Lanka Barbie holds a bowl of rice to offer at the temple. He made a wine vat for Lucy Italian movie, complete with stomped grapes in it. A man like that you shouldn't let get away, so last May Brian and I got married. 9/18/02

Anika~~I'm a 33 year old AA woman. My story actually starts on a sad note. I started collecting Barbie back in 94 when my mom was really ill. I was buying dolls with no rhyme or reason. I was just shopping to be shopping. It was after my mom passed away in 96 that I stopped collecting for a few months. I think the 1st doll that really got me into being a collector was Emerald Elegance. When I saw that doll in the case at TRU I had to have her.~~ Soon there was a new love in my life. I found Barbie Bazaar and people with lists who were selling all kinds of dolls that fit into my budget and my collection grew. I actually stopped counting back at 400 so I'm not sure what I have now. One day I will do an actual inventory but for now I'm just happy looking at my "community". I had never played with Barbie or her friends and family as a little girl. I was too much of a tomboy for that. Now my collection of Barbie, her friends & family, celebrities, Star Wars, Star Trek, & Disney fill the want I never had but have now. 9/18/02

Anita aka Bellatrix ~~ I'm from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I've been on this board for quite some time, but I don't post too often.~~ I'm 22 and currently a 3rd year computer engineering student. My hobbies include the following: collecting coins, astronomy, electronics, learning languages, playing piano, singing, skiing, skating, and of course, collecting Barbies.~~ I've been collecting dolls for a little over a year. I have around forty Barbies in my collection, but still no Silkstones or any vintages yet. My favorites include Mademoiselle Isabelle and the Merlin and Morgan Le Fay set. I hope to get Empress Sissy and Venetian Opulence someday. I also collect Disney dolls. My favorite Disney doll is Belle on Broadway. I like collecting cultural and dolls with clothing from the olden days. This is why the Dolls of the World series is one of my favorites. 9/18/02

Anne in DE ~~ I am the mom Brooke in DE collects with! I have always loved dolls and remember saving my $3.00 to buy my first Barbie. I think she is a number 3 and she is on loan to my daughter Brooke in DE at the present time. When I was a teen I made wardrobes for my 2 sister's Barbies and I am still sewing for Barbie. I like the silkstone dolls and any red head ones. :-) Brooke and I really enjoy collecting together and while I rarely post I do enjoy reading this board. 9/18/02

Barb in Chicago~~I'm Barb J, thankful to be married for over 33 years to the world's most tolerant man. I've got two daughters, born 16 years apart ... which makes Life ever an adventure!... I've been a working mom all my life, and have been running my own business as a PhotoStylist since 1978. ~~ As for Barbie in my world... well, I am older than dirt, so you can guess that I've known Barbie from her very beginning. Of course, in 1959 my attention was divided between following my beloved Chicago White Sox in their quest for the American League pennant and making little outfits for my 'Barbie'clone. Yes, the lucky doll even had a handmade Sox uniform. :-)~~ Back then, one doll was more than enough... and now it's hard to believe that was ever the case... I have collected such great variety and have so many favorites. My preference has always been for a dressable and poseable doll... and now I am enjoying the many variations of jointed dolls in the pink aisle. They keep getting better!~~ My collection is actually an extension of my eldest daughter's collection, started in the late 70's. Our usual playtime involved creating rooms or apartments for the dolls. Barbies lived in bookcases, on tabletops, in cardboard boxes and even in the Mattel A-frame; and Barbie's world was crafted from any available objects which seemed to fit into that 1:6 scale. The doll rooms provided the staging for many played-out dramas involving my daughters doll collection, where every single doll had a very defined personality. It was the SIMs game of her generation :-)~~As my eldest daughter started to outgrow her Barbies, my youngest was just becoming interested; so there was a vinyl continuum in our household. And the accumulating began in earnest with my second daughter! ~~ Somewhere in the course of collecting new members for our Barbie families, it became necessary to create our own variations... Probably wanted to lose a blond and add a brunette ... Well, the heads just keep on rolling! LOL... I have no qualms about switching body parts, especially if the result is a beautiful new face for a poseable body. The only dolls I haven't wanted to disassemble are the silkies... but even that may change if a poseable body comes on the scene for Silkstones :-) ~~Presently, I'm having fun posing the dolls for digital photos and creating custom props for their little worlds. The latest passion around here is making mini-cocktails for the Barbie lushes to enjoy at their own little Martini Bar. I've already overdone it and am now selling many of those little drinks on eBay :-o ~~ I'm guessing that there's not TOO much of my story that's unique from many of yours...~~Bottom Line: It's ALL for FUN and should be FUN for ALL! ~~Now, GO PLAY DOLLS!~~ :-D LOL ...barb johnson(ChicagoBarb)9/18/02

Barbara I in NY~~Hello. I usually read this board, but don't usually post. However, I like the idea of getting to know a little bit about each other, so here is my story.~~First of all, let me say, I am an Accountant (CPA) and a doll collector, which is an unusual combination, to say the least! I am married, and have one son, and my son and husband continually tease me about my doll collecting, but have learned to accept it as a part of who I am. ~~Anyway, I remember getting my first Barbie doll when I was 3-4. It is one of my earliest memories, as my sister, who is 7 years older than me, got a lovely ponytail, and my dad decided to buy me a brunette bubblecut, so I wouldn't be jealous. Though I wanted a ponytail too, he thought (wisely) that I might pull the hair out, so the bubblecut seemed smarter. Mom pulled the earrings out, so I wouldn't eat them - hence, my bubblecut has no green ear (way to go, mom!) I still have that bubblecut with HUGE brunette hair, from around 1964.~~I played Barbie until I was around 11, and then put them away for years. Only after my sister started collecting Barbies and other dolls did I decide it was "acceptable" for me to collect as an adult also. This was around 12 years ago, and it started innocently enough, when my husband got me the Kool-Aid Barbie (he worked in sales then, and sold Kool-Aid, as well as other products). After that, I learned about "collector" Barbies, made especially for adult collectors, and that was it! I was hooked, and the rest is history, as they say!~~I do collect other dolls (the larger fashion dolls, some vintage hard plastic dolls, etc), but will always have a special place in my heart for Barbie, as she was the first doll I remember getting and actually playing with!~~ And, I must say, I am glad I found this board a few years ago. It has really opened my eyes up to collecting Barbie. Thanks to everyone here, I feel I've gotten a great Barbie education, and I no longer feel like an isolated collector! 9/18/02

Barbara NJ~~Barbie was my second play doll but my favorite. I had dolls,outfits,cases,houses,cars... all I wanted to do was play with my Barbies. I have 2 older cousins who gave me their dolls when they out grew them. My younger sister loved dolls also but mostly baby dolls. When she was about 4 I helped her write her letter to Santa it started like this Dear Santa I like dolls but please don't bring me Barbie cause we have too many in the house. I had a big trunk I used to carry my dolls in when we went out. I tried to run away when I was 6 bringing only my trunk(lots of clothes for Barbie none for me LOL).I gave my dolls away when I was 12(aarrgg). When I was 26 I saw Doll Reader on a newstand so I bought it. I enjoyed reading it and ordered a doll here and there I had 4 or 5. My then fiance and I were going for a ride in Pa. so I decided to check out a doll store I found listed. I walked in and there she was collector Barbie's!! I thought I could look and not buy (haha) but found 1 I just had to have poreclain repro Solo in the Spotlight. Joe offered to buy her for me saying we're getting married soon you won't be buying many.(haha). Well 11 years and 100+ Barbie's later I'm still addicted and loving every minute of it. I collect all types Mackies, play line, vintage,OOAK. I love them all!! 9/18/02

Barbara in VA~~For my ninth birthday (many moons ago!), I received a blonde bubblecut with a selection of outfits such as Tennis Anyone, Registered Nurse, and more. My dad had gone out and bought the doll and outfits for me. My mom actually did not approve of Barbie's adult figure and would never buy Barbie for my older sister or me. My sister has always been jealous that I got Barbies and she didn't since by that time I guess my folks thought she had outgrown dolls. I still have my original Barbies and outfits in my case with the Red Flare outfit on the front. ~~ A few years ago, my sister and I renewed our love for Barbie and my sister finally got her first Barbie! And, my mom now has her own Barbie collection, too! So, collecting Barbie is a real family affair! 9/18/02

Barbra~~Bremerton, WA. I have been lurking on the board daily for over 2 years, and feel like I know some of you from reading your posts and enjoying your pictures! ~~ My interest in dolls began in the mid 80's, while I was raising my daughter. We collected mermaid dolls together, and for myself, I collected Celebrity dolls and the fancy Fairy Tale dolls from The Franklin Mint. My spiral downward into Barbie Bedlam began on a trip to Paris with my daughter in 1994...we wanted to find an authentic French doll to bring home for our collection. After searching every store, we decided the most "authentic" doll was a French-speaking Teen Talk Barbie! Fast forward 8 years, and now I have over 1000 Barbies...and I see no end in sight with the glorious Silkstone line that has a whole new generation of Barbie collectors addicted! Since I discovered eBay 3 years ago, my Celebrity doll collection has grown huge...and my interest in fashion dolls of ANY kind even HuGeR!! I am now surrounded by the following fashion dolls: Darci, Jem, Tiffany Taylor, Tuesday Taylor, Misty, Tammy, Candi (both vintage 70's by Mego and the current lines by Helena What's-her-name and Integrity), Charice, Harmony, Magic Hair Crissy, Star Wars, Star Trek, Xena, Jakks Pacific dolls, Gene, Madra, Violet, Tyler, Esme, Sidney, Super Size Barbie, Leggy, advertising dolls, and just about every female action figure made...Whew! Of course there's no way I can display everything, so more than half of my collection is stored in boxes...filling an entire basement family room!~~I have a doll room lined floor-to-ceiling with my favorite boxed Barbies, Disney, Star Wars, Star Trek, Xena, and dozens of loose fashion dolls...but as we have been remodelling our house over the last few years, many of the doll displays I had throughout the house have had to be boxed up and delegated to the Doll Dungeon in the basement, SOB! I have promised my husband I would begin to unload on eBay soon...but I find "getting started" rather overwhelming! I'm hoping once I do, I'll become as addicted to selling as I am to buying...and will begin to reduce and define my collection to a manageable--and completely displayable-number! Wish me luck!!

Beancy~~Hello...My name is Mary(better known as Beancy), I live in NJ. I have been a barbie collector since 2/99. My favorites are (of course) Mackies and Silkstones... ~~I collect MANY others though. I am happy to have recently aquired a new curio (my first and only) to display my barbies in!!~~I am a computer tech who works out of my home, I am married with four cats(children). My husband works in computers also.~~I got started collecting simply by going to the barbie website to see what it was about..I basically wanted to see if they had any of the old ones I used to play with. When I saw the collectable area, I went nuts...~~ My dream doll would be either Billions of dreams or Pink Splendor.~~My funniest Barbie story would have to be when my husband and I were playing flag football together..... He was trying to encourage me and he said "Honey, if you get a touchdown, that hundred I made yesterday (on a side job), I will go up to Toys R Us and get Madame Du Barbie for you."~~Well, he OBVIOUSLY only made that statement thinking I couldnt get a touchdown... only, I DID IT! He had no idea what kind of fury he unleashed when he mentioned BARBIE!!!!! ~~woo woo, that was a great day! 9/18/02

Becky, Austin~~Can't remember the first Barbie I got as a kid. I know I had one of the non-bend leg girls with a black and white bathing suit and ponytail, and like millions of other little girls I traded her in for the first Twist'n'turn, a redhead who I LOVED.~~As a kid, I had mostly mod dolls and clothing. My favorites were Twiggy, the white haired Stacy, and of course, Nurse Julia. ~~I got back into collecting this past Christmas when my best friend bought just one Holiday SUrprise AA dolls from the grocery store sales bin. One thing led to another, and now I have a whole village of pretty plastic people plus I have made a good deal of friends on the board and at my local doll shop.~~ What dolls would I love to have? Okay, I am fessing up---I've been bitten by the 16 inch bug so the list has to be shared with Tonner dolls.~~
  • 1. White haired Stacey on a living Barbie body
  • 2. Twiggy's clothes on an AA Francie
  • 3. Arthur and Gwennie (Okay, just Arthur!)
  • 4. Look of Luxe Tyler
  • 5. Basic Sydney Raven
Stop booing and hissing! Barbie Village needs Amazon Queen Protectors!!!! 9/18/02

Bethany, PA ~~ Bethany's Dollhouse ~~ I usually just lurk but have come out of hiding on occasion. My job as a TV station production manager (and sometimes TV producer & director) keeps me pretty busy so I can't post all that much. I live near Penn State University, so a good part of my life is tied up in sports, everything from ice hockey (love the Pittsburgh Penguins) to Penn State football, as you might guess.~~ I've been collecting in one form or another since 1984, when my mom bought me the DeWein and Manos books on Barbie for my birthday. Around the same time, an older woman set up her Barbie stand at a local flea market and after looking at the books and saving my lawn mowing money, I bought my first vintage doll, an ash blonde bubble cut wearing Sophisticated Lady, complete with crown and pearls. For me, that was the best doll I had ever seen. When the Mackie Gold Barbie came out, I branched out into newer Barbies. Now, I collect everything from Barbie to Gene to Tyler to Darci and Brooke Shields. Including structures, furniture, cars, clothes, lunchboxes, paper dolls, etc.~~Currently, I can't even begin to count the number of dolls I have (probably over 2,000), so I'm in the process of refocusing my collection and selling those that I no feel "attached" to. My main loves are the Mod era, convention dolls and the early pink box era, or what I affectionately call "Early Superstar until 1985." Those will be the primary focus of my collection from here on out. ~~Eventually I would love to add a blonde #1 ponytail MIB in her black and white swimsuit or a Japanese side part, high color AG in Gala Abend. In the meantime, I?ll stick with things like Walking Jamie and Fashion Photo PJ. 9/18/02

Brenda MO~~My name is Brenda (View Pic ). I live in St. Joseph, Missouri with my husband and three children.Justin who is 15, Tylee who 13 (and think she going on 17)and Jacob who is 9. It all started when my Mom gave my daughter my Barbie & Dawn dolls from when I was a child. I realized how much I love Barbie when I was little and I started buying some of the holiday dolls. I'm up to about 300 Barbies now. I have started to slow down on buying. I use to buy everyone I saw, now i just by what I like. And they all come out of their boxes to play. I love come to this board because this is the closest I come to a Barbie club around here.I don't always post but I do read all the post. I have gotten some great deals from people that have posted about them here. 9/18/02

Brett, MD~~Greetings from Washington, DC. I normally lurk on this board and post every now and then. I have always had a thing for fashion so it's only natural that I have a Barbie collection. I guess mine's pretty small compared to many but I seem to manage alright. :-) ~~I started my collection with Ralph Lauren Barbie. I just thought she was the epitome of fashion. I originally fooled myself and said I was just buying a few to sell but then it just started happening. I was buying everything and it got worse when I discovered Ebay! :-) ~~Soon I was overwhelmed so I have since sold off a bunch of my dolls and my collection is essentially in three parts. I collect African American Barbies (love Byron Lars, they're so unique), designer Barbies (I'm one of the few who really likes the Bill Blass Barbies) and Silkstones. All the Silkstones are deboxed and redressed frequently. I especially like the daywear and I love to get original one of a kind clothing. I found a fabu fur for my Silkstones and I love James Bogue's stuff.~~I also have a Fashion Queen dressed in Evening Splendor (my only foray into vintage) I don't so much have a dream doll but I am looking forward to the new Silkstone (I forgot the name, the one where she's a model) I wish there where more high quality clothes for the Silkstones though! ~~My next project is to build a house and I have been slowing buying furniture. I want it to look realistic so no pink furniture for me! I'm in love with the Vitra miniature chair collection, I bought some miniature Pottery Barn furniture and found stuff at this website: CATALOG 9/18/02

Brooke in DE~~About 7 years ago or so, I was in KayBee toy store, don't even remember why, since I was around 13 years old at the time, and at that point I'd outgrown KayBee. But, anyway, I saw the reproduction Solo in the Spotlight doll. I thought it was so neat that they had made a doll to look like one of the vintage ones. I made puppy dog eyes at my mom to get it for me. It was 19.99. At the time that seemed way expensive for a doll (If I'd known then that I'd later pay 199.99 for a Mackie...). So I had the repro for a few months and didn't really do anything else with Barbie until Clover store went out of business. Their toy section was 30 or 40 percent off and they happened to have three of the Great Eras dolls. At this point, I didn't really realize collector dolls existed, and I couldn't believe there were dolls with such great costumes and rooted eyelashes! I convinced my mom to buy them as early birthday presents. After that, Barbie was suddenly everywhere I looked...Avon, Wal-mart, K-mart, J.C. Penney's, Service Merchandise, BEST (bought some of the pilgrim dolls and DOTW when that store went out of business). It wasn't until I got on the internet that I started collecting more than just store exclusives. I got a job at my dad's office, and then I discovered eBay. So all of my paychecks went to repaying my mom (oops all of my paychecks still do go to repaying my mom). Basically my mom and I collect together. She likes the silkstones and the coke barbies and a few others. I like the designer dolls and the Mackies and the Hollywood dolls (since I was a film major). I used to do OOAK and participate in swaps. Then, I went to college and Barbie moved out of my life for a while. Now I'm back home, newly graduated and I found Barbie again. It's so weird to see how the hobby has changed over the years. I feel all old now. 9/18/02

*C* (Charles in London, England) ~~ I have an aunt who had all the mod dolls when I was a kid.... I kept bending the legs the wrong way so she gave me an 'old' barbie to play with.... a blonde swirl. I hated her and my grandad took me aged 5 off to a toystore. I remember it as if it were yesterday.... a counter and behind the assistant.... loads of AG's and mod dolls..... WOOO HOOO!!!!... they tried to get me to settle for tutti or skipper... telling me I'm small and that would suit me..... uh oh!!! NO!!! I got the tnt I wanted!!!.... she was soon broken and lost! Many years later... I found in a junk shop a brunette ponytail for about $2.00 and started asking around.... then a boxed BC and then... just more and more.... I started the 'Hectic Barbie doll club' and did numerous television and radio slots.... I did magazine articles and I advertised in all the papers. I now have LOADS of vintage dolls most from original owners who I have met and have promised the honour of being 'Guardian' to their childhood treasures. They make me happy.... they help me through bad times and they are there with me with the good times. I love Barbie.... although Sydney Chase rings my bells too!~~ This is a brief story of a 15 year addiction..... did I tell you about when I found a caselot of '88 Happy Holidays for about $50?... have I got tales to tell!...... but more some othertime. ~~I really enjoyed reading other peoples stories.... thanks for all this sharing!9/18/02

C in CA~~I still have my childhood dolls...Malibus, Growin' Hair Francie. Money was tight growing up, so I got the generic Barbie clothes for Christmas. I've sort of made up for that now. I started collecting in '98 when I discovered eBay, and re-bought the Kologne Kiddles I had as a child. Then I happened to catch the TRU sales of BOD and Madame Du when they were at $99, and the floodgates were open. ~~ I'm having my 'second life' and going to Fashion School, and am closing in on a two-year 'Apparel Design' degree. I love the technical aspects of it...patternmaking, and draping on a form. I've studied fashion unofficially since I was 14. Going to fashion school was always a distant dream for me. I was previously a travel agent...went to Paris every year and cased out the ateliers, while all my co-workers went to Hawaii.~~I'm a modern collector, and love the fact that barbie gets new clothes every season, just like humans! The fashions often reflect current pop culture, and what is going on in the fashion world. I'm satisfied with the one silkstone I have (raven), and I feel lucky that vintage does nothing for me. ~~What floats my boat nowadays is trying to create a better display scheme than just having them in a precinct style line-up. I'm building a sixth scale wooden house, just finished electrifying, and am working on the shingles now. Building a dollhouse is a much slower process than I'd imagined. The theme of the house is inspired by my visits to Paris. Now when I see the Barbie pre-production photos, I find I'm studying the sets and backgrounds more than admiring the dolls.9/18/02

Carla ~~ I live on a dairy farm in missouri in the beautiful Ozark Mountians. I'm 49 years old. I never played with Barbie dolls when I was a kid. It all started in 1999 when I was in Montgomery Wards and walked by a return table. There was a 40th Anniversary Barbie setting there and I picked it up and looked at it and the love affair began. Not long after that I bought the first Barbie I'd ever owned ( 40th Anniversary Barbie ) And here I am 3 years later with 200+ dolls and a passion that won't leave me alone. I can honestly say that this hobby has brought me many hours of enjoyment. My little 2 yr old grandaughter loves My dolls and we spend a lot of time together just playing. I have promised her that someday all of the dolls that she cant play with now will all be hers. 9/18/02

Carrie/Mass~~Hello Everyone!~~Just love to see all the great posts today. I have been lurking/occasionally posting for about 2 years. Just love to see all the message, Barbie discussions and pictures. I’ve found some great deals thanks to you all. I am 30-something, married and the mother of a beautiful 5 yr old daughter. My daughter shares my love for Barbie, sadly my husband does not. Oh well, too bad for him..LOL! ~~Here’s how it all began for me: I can still remember getting my first Barbie, Malibu Barbie, for my 3rd birthday. She was soon followed by Quick Curl Barbie and Sweet 16 Barbie. I would spend hours taking the dolls camping in their Country Camper or planning parties in the Town House. I played with Barbie almost constantly until I was 11. After my 12th birthday, my mother insisted that I was too old to play Barbies. My grandmother agreed and offered to buy my dolls as a present to my 5 year old cousin. After much discussion, I sold everything for $100. A decision I regret to this day as a few months later everything was destroyed by my cousin.~~In 1995, I met a co-worker that was into Barbie. He used to talk about his collection all the time and would spend his lunch hours shopping at KB for new dolls. I confessed to him that I had wished I had not sold my childhood dolls. A few days later my co-worker presented me with a Pizza Party Skipper doll. I thanked him for the doll and said I would put it on a shelf at home. He immediately insisted that I open the doll and “play with it”. He would not let me resume work until I did. Well I freed that doll (my first skipper doll) and was hooked. ~~Since that day I have been an avid collector. My collection includes little bit of everything (well its getting to be a lot). My favorites are the vintage Skippers, Francies, any Barbie from the 70’s and early 80’s, and Silkstones. I now have approx 500 Barbie and friends and another 60+ non-Barbie dolls (Dawn, Jenny, Sailormoon…etc). I admit that more than half of my dolls are still in their boxes (not quite NRFB as most of the ties are removed). I simply do not have display cases or cabinets for all of my treasures. Someday I hope to have a great Barbie Room and they will all be freed! 9/18/02

Carrie/NY~~ Hello from New York City! I'm in my early 30s, and I work in investment sales. I loved playing Barbies with my sister; I had Sweet 16 Barbie and Live Action PJ. My mom had to throw out Sweet 16 after my brother tried to make her do a cartwheel and broke her legs apart, lol :) By then, she was no longer in production and was replaced by Superstar Barbie, Fashion Photo Barbie and a Barbie Townhouse (which I still have, elevator and all!) . I outgrew Barbies soon after, until a trip to Toys 'R Us in 1996, when I saw Midnight Gala Barbie in the case and had to have her! My collection topped off at around 200 which I've pretty much sold off, and now down to around 30 dolls. My focus is on anything Silkstone and dolls with outfits that will fit Silkstones, as well as vintage repros. Other interests include home decorating, cooking, and I'm an active volunteer for animal shelters, womens' shelters and mentoring. I'm going back to school for speech pathology or elementary education. Hopefully within the next 2 years, my boyfriend and I will have our own house in the 'burbs - complete with 2 dogs, a fishtank full of seahorses, and a gourmet kitchen like Emeril's, LOL :) 9/18/02

Carrilyn~~First a bit about me: I'm 32, raising a teenage boy and need all the "play" time I can get lol. I live in an apartment over run by dolls and toys with my son and our two kitties, Elvis and Baby. When I'm not playing, I sell bubble bath for a living lol.~~ As a little girl I spent nearly every weekend playing with Barbie. I would spend the weekend at my grandma's house and all us neighborhood girls would bring out all our Barbies and spread them all over the lawn. I have most all my childhood dolls, some clothes and two of my cases. My favorite dolls are my Francie and TNT from childhood. They were given to me by my great-grandfather, we suspect he picked them up at a garage sale.~~At various stages of childhood/teenage-hood I would take out my dolls and redress them or just spread them out to look at. This goes for my Holly Hobbie dolls as well ;o) I became an "adult" collector about 6 years ago. I think what really got me hooked was Harley #1. For some reason my mom and I went to a show, I saw Harley, had to have her, opened her up even before getting back to the car. My grandma had just died and I inherited some money. Even though I felt CRAZY for spening $150.00 on a doll I knew the money was meant for me to have fun with!~~So, years later and far too many dolls to count, I am completely hooked!!! I collect everything from Kelly's to vintage to fashions and trinkets. My mom and I attend the conventions and we have fun with the hobby together. I have met some really great friends through this hobby and the internet, some of which I'm meeting up with in Las Vegas in 2 weeks!~~I'm a firm believer in DEBOXING. Here's a picture of one of my cases. Thanks to Punkie and Marvin I have two of these awesome cases. They sure hold a BUNCH of dolls :o) I feel fortuante to have found this board. it's my second home ;o) Thanks Vicky!! 9/18/02

Carol in VT~~ I was born the same year as Barbie (but she's several months older!) I have been married for almost 18 years and have 3 kids - 14, 11 and 3. My very first Barbie was a bubble cut and I still have her along with most of my childhood dolls, clothing and accessories. At around the age of 12 everyone told me I was too old for Barbies but I never completely stopped playing with them. I can remember coming home on college breaks and taking my Barbies out, redressing them and playing a little. In my early twenties I would check out the Barbie aisle in stores. My Barbie collecting began in Sept. 1994. I am a Hallmark ornament collector and had purchased the 1993 Holiday Barbie ornament the previous year. I was in a store that was going out of business and they had the 1993 Holiday Barbie doll. My first thought was I should buy her to go with the ornament. It would be a nice way to buy a Barbie again without people thinking it strange that an adult wanted a Barbie doll :-) Little did I know! The rest as they say is history. I now have hundred's, I don't dare count, of Barbies. I have recently been reaccessing my collection and have sold off some dolls. I love vintage, Silkstones, advertising, DOTW, Generation Girls and fashion designer Barbies. But my real obsession now are Barbie fashions! I love the FAs and have almost everyone NRFB including foreign and variations, some 500+ FAs. I'm just missing a handful! I collect Discover The World, Haute Couture, Private Collection, Oscar de la Renta, Fancy Frills, Pret-A-Porter, Bennetton and lots of other fashions. I am fortunate, through selling on ebay, to have made a couple European friends that help feed my habit for foreign fashions.~~Another very big plus to my Barbie collecting has been the friends I have made. They aren't just there for Barbie collecting but for all of lifes ups and downs. I reconnected with my cousin through Barbie collecting. She and I spent hours and hours and hours playing Barbies as children and then drifted apart in our teens due to different interests. We now "talk" by email several days a week :-) 9/18/02

Catherine G. in Dallas~~I've been playing with Barbies since I was a small child (in the late 60's - early 70's.) I used to make my own doll clothes & my Mom would also make me really cool Barbie clothes, too. My favorites are the mod-era dolls & my biggest regret is selling all my stuff at a garage sale when I was a teen-ager. I'm now re-collecting the stuff I remember having back then & I've just started playing with Barbies again for the past year or two. I love customizing & making tiny jewelry for them. 9/18/02

Charon~~ I started out over 25 years ago while as a child I had G.I Joe, Six Million Dollar Man, Wonder Woman etc. My fascination with action figures lead me to the pink aisle (which of course at that time was a waist of time. No young boy would ever be caught with a barbie back then) My mother then bought me a Busy Ken and then later on I got a Paul Stanley from Kiss and a Sport and Shave Ken. I dont recall my first actual barbie doll as it happened so fast as most obsessions do. I had to have Barbie, and all of her friends and Darci, and Tuesday Taylor. By the mid 80's to 90's dolls were a thing of the past although I still kept all of my old ones. I still looked but wouldn't buy, that is until I saw the AA Starlight dance in a J.C Penny catalog, she reminded me of the live action Christie that I never got. Once I got her it opened up the flood gates for collectibles. At first I bought them all until I saw Tangerine Twist by Kitty Black-Perkins and In the Lime Light by Byron Lars. For the first time the black dolls actually looked like real black women so I had to have them all. As time went on the faces anf face paint only got better. As a result I collect the High end Black dolls and I love the dolls of the world. Now I'm on the process of going back and getting the dolls from my 70's child hood era like the Mego Cher, Wonder Woman, etc. Barbie has lessened her grip these days, but now I really have the dolls that I really love. 9/18/02

Cheryl in OR~~Believe it or not, my parents actually had to call the police because of me and Barbie! It was a missing child call, lol! I was probably about 8 or 9, it was 1964. We lived way up in the mountains in Oregon, and I had been missing for hours. What had happened is that on my bike ride, I had passed by another little girl playing Barbies out in front of her cabin in Rhododendron. Before I knew it, hours and hours had passed. Well, that was about 37 years ago. Now, my first Barbie, a Titian ponytail, has lots of sisters! I collect Vintage, Silkstones, and a few celebrity dolls, and love to set up little scenes with my dolls. I also sew for them and once won 2nd place in an AOL online-convention contest.9/18/02

Christie~~I have always been a barbie fan. I took a break from dolls when I started high school. I never thought about them again until I saw a picture of Superstar Christie. She was the doll I always wanted but never received. Then it dawned on me. I am an adult, I have my own money- darn it- I am going to buy that doll! So I did. After that, I was hooked again. ~~Lately, my collecting has cooled. I had my own little doll this April. My daughter is more fun to dress up than any Barbie! :) I am sure my collecting will pick up again when she is old enough to share the hobby with me. So that's my story... 9/18/02

Cindy in FL~~When I was about 10 years old. I had a lovely ash blonde bubblecut. My cousin had one with red hair. I have coveted red hair on Barbie since this time. My sister has red hair too. Anyway, I also had a fashion queen (Nora, my dog ate the wigs) and later a twist N turn with the long straight hair. She was just like the one that Mattel offered if you traded in a ponytail. My memory of those years is faded, but I still feel that I had a ponytail and traded it for that TNT. This is my personal life-long nightmare. In 1989 I saw a happy holiday Barbie at Toys R Us and re-entered the world of Barbie. I started going to doll shows and buying as much as I could afford. I went to work in a lab on campus sometime in the 80's and a coworker showed me the world wide web on the lab computer. I asked him to type in barbie in search and found the plastic princess page. It was so cool. Then I got on Jennifer Wharf's email chatlist and got 100's of emails a day from other barbie lovers. It was heaven. But those things came to an end. This board has been my source of comrades for years. Thank you vicky and keep kicking. 9/18/02

Coco in CA(aka Carol)~~My first Barbie was a blonde bubblecut when I was around 11 years old. She was the first doll that I really enjoyed as I preferred stuffed animals over the baby dolls available at the time.~~The first barbies that started my collection were play dolls bought 15 years ago when I was working my way back from being nearly homeless, living on a broken down couch in a friend's spare room. They sat on the back rest and gave me a sense of comfort and encouragement during my challenging time. I still have those dolls even though they were just play dolls.~~I started seriously collecting Barbie when I discovered "Gibson Girl". I looked forward to each new edition to the Great Eras series. Since that time I have collected many other Barbie Collectibles and larger fashion dolls too. I have slowed down the collecting and sold off some things to keep my collection manageable and enjoyable. I really enjoy the Silkies.~~By the way, I was able to adapt my work skills to the computer world; I have been a CAD Drafter for 14 years which is why I can afford this hobby.~~I would really like to own a Brunette American Girl, but I have not found the "right" doll. I have only 5 vintage Barbies because I am very careful and picky.~~I am 8 years older than Barbie and I live with my husband and two cats. My AKA is "Coco" named after my recently deceased kitty who won my heart 14 years ago. (but that's another story) ~~I appreciate everyone of you, even when some are crabby and nasty. You all are a wonderful diversion from other mundane tasks. I love the fact that people from around the world can share here. I have learned a lot. 9/18/02

Colleen, Chicago~~Well, My name is Colleen Kelly from the west suburbs of Chicago IL and I loved barbie as a little kid, in fact I was still secretly playing with my dolls and my little sisters dolls as late as high school. I'm 36 now and i can honestly say I've loved barbie for almost 30 years. I remember making barbarella outfits for them out of fabric scraps and once getting in a LOT of trouble for cutting up one of mommy's glitzy dresses to make a glitzier dress for barbie. (I actually found the exact dress and doll when cleaning out mom's attic 5 years ago, wow! what a rush to find one of my first ooak outfits hahaha! not bad for a little kid! here is a picture of that childhood dress on a later doll.)~~ I had my so called barbie dark ages from age 16 to 23. I think I would see and admire one or two, but didn't own any. I did collect books, and comics and trinket boxes, but no dolls, until hubby graduated from college and we got our own place. My very first doll in my collection was the cinderella in the shimmery blue dress. I've always loved fairytales and while shopping at the mall of america I saw that one and just begged hubby to buy me her. I had just dropped a few hundred at the LEGO store so he resisted, but that night at the hotel I had my doll. We went a bit crazy indulging me those years, I was in cancer treatment so anything we found to distract me from the pain and meds was a blessing. I think we spent $10K on lego and about $5 on dolls in that year alone. I was very thrify and frugal, only buying on ebay and on sale. JCP clearance catalog was a lways a source for the fancier dolls after christmas. My collection grew and grew and grew and now it takes up 2 rooms in our 3 bdr house. ~~We moved from a 2 story 5 bdr house to this tiny one so all my lovelies are in storage bins, large plastic shoeboxes that are stacked from floor to ceiling. I think my favorites have always been fantasy and historical ooaks and I think the ones I love most in my collection are the historical gowns by Sarena, my dazzling femmes from Ray S., victorian gals from Nella, bellydancers from Melina, fairies from LOTS of people, mermaids and goddesses from Kertkraft, French court ladies by Bella Luna, I treasure these unique creations more than my Mackies. ~~I also adore the dolls of the world and have all the series including most variations. I love the new princess dotw also. I lucked out and won almost 20 dolls all ooak dotw made by the same woman, Karen Miller. She designed these from national geographic articles and they are beautiful and authentic and some are made with vintage dolls like Julia(Zululand) and a TNT brunette. Some of the countries she made are Lapland, Whales, Greece, Finland, Cambodia, Turkey, Arabia and more. They are just stunning and it was like fighting a battle to win as many of these gals on ebay as I could. I think they are the largest subcollection of any one artist I have in my ooaks. ~~Since I've always loved sewing and painting and always made clothes for myself and others it was a simple step to officially call myself an ooak doll artist. I was making and selling lurid risque ooaks in the adult shops of Chicago and at SF conventions even before I bought my first doll for myself to keep. My kajira Barbie was always popular at the SF cons. These days I make a lot of Kelly dolls, about 3 or 4 high court fairies a year, and the occasional lewd barbie for hubby since he has his own much smaller collection of Barbie. He has only ever wanted the Star Trek and Harley barbies for himself, tho I've bought him a few trek oriented ooaks, and made him Klingon women and every Christmas a lurid fetish oriented gal. He has a handful of Jenny and other anime type dolls as well.~ ~Some of the higlights of my collecting years have been receiving that last doll to complete the Mattel DOTW series (Italy #1, she's one of the hardest to find complete), getting my first Bella Luna ooak, my first Mackie (Madame Du), and winning 3rd place in the BB Bazaar 2001 contest. I don't travel well so the only convention I ever made it to was the Detroit national last year and I loved it! Finally getting to meet the faces behind the emails was delightful. I love sharing ym collection thru my webpages so feel free to browse and see pics of some of ooaks and some of my own designs as well. my nickname is Minx (from romance novels and renfaires) and my hubby teases me about how seldom I sell my deisngs. I love my dolls too much so I find it very hard to part with any. He picked my business name of "Minxworks... but only when she has to" and it pretty much fits. I'm still sick a lot and so Barbie contiues to be my painkiller of choice, the diversion that can uplift me more than any meds. Between dolls and LEGO our house is full, my days are full, and someday I'll be able to start my own doll museum. ~~All my dolls are deboxed, I love feeling the fabrics, seeing them up close and not thru cellophane. I have all the kelly dolls too. I shop hard and a play hard, being ruthless in the auctions sometimes. :) kamikaze bidding one person called it. 70% of my collection came from Barry's dolls with his thursday night lists and TV dinner style packaging of deboxed darlings... and from Michael Augustyniak with his wonderful ebay sales. I'd end up with these refrigerator sized boxes once or twice a year from Michael and it would be like Christmas morning! I'd empty the box over the course of a day or two to savor the joy. ~~In terms of which dolls, I think I still try to get every playline that comes along in all the ethnic variations. I got maybe 40% of the high end dolls they throw our way, and in terms of collecting oldies from my childhood I think I've managed to do that. I have all the dolls from the mid to late 70's and early 80's. My faves are astronaut B (uin pink lame jumpsuit/skirt) kissing Christie, Pink & pretty, beauty secrets, magic moves, ANY ballerina barbie, Fashion Photo BB & PJ, and all the others from my youth. I only have a handful of vintage, some great skippers, growing up skipper and ginger were ALWAYS faves of mine as a kid. I think my family finally accepted my doll addiction in the last year or 2. At a big fancy dinner where my Dad was being installed as state president for the Elks Organization, he introduced each of his kids and when it was my turn he called me his middle daughter, brightest jewel, and a Barbie tycoon. Everyone laughed in a nice way and I smiled. THAT was a precious moment to me that my dad understood and didn't think me wacko. Well I am actually, but it has nothing to do with dolls.~~That's a lot longer than I indended it to be so I'll just stop here. It is hard to sum up what our dolls have meant to us because for so many of us they are more than pretty baubles and silly impulse purchases. They represent a huge portion of our time and energy (and dollars!) and are a focus of our lives. not the most important oe, but rarely the least importtant one either. 9/18/02

Corena ~~ We moved to Indiana a little over a year ago for my husband's job....Why Indiana? Everyone asks since we lived in beautiful Flagstaff, Arizona for 11 years. Well when your job stinks and you get an offer from the #1 engineering undergrad school you move. So my passion for Barbies has increased mostly due to boredom. BUT I HAVE TO SAY I HAVE MET TERRI IN IN AND SHE IS WONDERFUL AND MADE MY MOVE BETTER SINCE I HAD A FRIEND WITH A MUTUAL PASSION! I have deboxed EVERY single Bob Mackie except (Pap) since I ran out of room in my doll case. I also collect Silkstones and I would love to get some of my old late 70's early 80's childhood barbies back. I have my very first original Darci doll, DOTW Spain, and a couple of Charlies Angels. But I have lost my original Dawn dolls somewhere in the world! boo hoo. I have 3 beautiful little girls that are always asking if they can have one of my Barbies and I laugh and say "When I am gone they will be willed to you". I am back to the work environment as of yesterday working for Saint Marys of the Woods College.....I can call them all "Sister" and it I won't mess up anyones names:) 9/18/02

Corie~~Hi everyone, I am an avid Barbie collector and My favorite mold is NICHELLE... especially Tangerine Twist and TRU AA Pink Inspiration! I have been collecting for about 10 years. I collect because I Love That doll. She screams I'm Every Woman its All in Me". 9/18/02

Cynthia, Houston~~ just turned 30 this year, and I live with my 2 cats and almost *gulp* 300 dolls! Most of them are Barbies, and a few are Gene Marshall repaints. I didn't even play with dolls as a kid! The madness crept in when I was 25 -- Happy Holidays Barbie 1996 was the culprit. They were on clearance at JC Penney's in early 1997, and I was taken with her blonde hair and BROWN eyes! And here I am...5 years later.~~I've never been bitten by the vintage or pink box bugs. I've always stuck to the collector's editions. My dream doll is still Mackie's Neptune...sigh. When I'm rich, she'll be MINE!~~The jewels in my collection? My NiniMomo's! I was HOOKED for a while there...I was looking for a good bankruptcy lawyer! But I managed to get a grip on things.~~Someday I hope to have a little girl to pass on my collection to..I'll even let her open the boxes! :) 9/18/02

Dan in SF~~ Wide Eyed Girls ~~ I was born in 1973 across the pond, which is where I grew up. My sister had a few Barbies, but mainly Sindy's, that I used to love playing with (quelle surprise), though of course I never really got any of my own to play with. I do rememeber her getting Crystal Barbie and me getting Crystal Ken from family friends! :-)~~ It wasn't until about 8 years ago that I started buying them for myself. I think it started off with a couple of playline dolls I bought a year apart. After I moved to the States five years ago, I bought myself the collector edition of Glinda for my birthday and tehn it just snowballed! LOL! I mainly collect playline, OOAK's and MOD/TNT stuff, as those are generally waht spek to me - I tend to like funkier stuff. I'm not big on the collector dolls - they always lack something, IMHO. ~~Three or so years ago I also got in to customising - I was a featured artist in Jim Faraone's fourth book and won first place in two categories at National Convention this year for two of my OOAK creations.~~For me, as much as I love the buzz of getting a new doll or outfit, be it a $5 FA or a $200 Talking Stacey, what's most important is the friends I've made through my hobby and passion. It really is the people - everything else is just "stuff". Love you all! 9/18/02

Debb ~~I live in St. Peters, Missouri, USA. I love it here. My husband and I have an auto body repair shop. We have 4 kids, two girls and two boys. Only 1 at home still. ~~My husband races and open wheeled modified, whenever he gets the chance. So guess what I do? PLAY BARBIE!!~~When I was a kid I wouldn't play with dolls, which really frustrated my mom. I would only play with horses. Then my aunt talked mom into buying me a Barbie, and my aunt got me a Midge. These I would play with for hours. They made clothes for me, and even bought me some outfits, of course I was in heaven.~~Then around 12, I got my first real horse. Barbie got put away. Then came boys, more school, marriage, and kids. ~~My parents got me a 1990 Happy Holiday Barbie, and slowly things got started. I couldn't believe how much I looked forward to receiving them. Then I would pick up a Barbie here and there once in a while.~~The kids have left home, now we have a workout room, a guest room, a Barbie room(really small), and only one of the kids still at home. I really think the is afraid to leave. He know what I have planned for his room. BARBIES!!~~I collect porcelain, silkie, collector, convention, WDW, and I like to get pink box sets. The grocery, special editions are a challenge. I also collect Hallmark, can't wait for the ornament premiere in October.~~I want to thank Vicky for this board where Barbie friends can come together and play. ~~Thank you to all the wonderful friends I have been met here. I would love to meet them in person. 9/18/02

Dee~~First of all let me say that although I haven't read all the posts, I have enjoyed very much reading the Barbie bios - it makes me feel like a part of a close knit community! Here is my story: I was 8 years old when I got my first Barbie; the one that's now referred to a blonde #5 PT. Unfortunately, I no longer have that particular doll, but I DO have my second, a beautiful Titian BC wearing the White Magic ensemble. Thank God for my mother that she kept all our Barbie dolls LOL! My sister and I put away our dolls as we got older, and it really wasn't til the 35th Anniversary Repro Barbie came out in 1994 that my love for this doll was rekindled; a thousand happy childhood memories is associated with Barbie, as I'm sure many of you can relate to. Although I buy what I like, my favorite dolls are the vintage, since these are the dolls I played with as a child. To date, I have about 56 different vintage dolls. I also collect the Repros because of their vintage look, and the majority of these are customized and redressed dolls. Regarding the contemporary Barbies, I basically specialize in customized period costume because of special interest in historical fashions (I have a degree in history). My period dress Barbies range from ancient Egyptian to 1980's fashions. It's hard to say which period costume is my favorite because I find something interesting about each era, but I think the Rococo is at the top of the list. My sister is also a collector, but she only collects vintage, and her favorite is Skipper - she has over 50 of these. The best thing I have liked about doll collecting are the different people I have met online AND at shows, and the special friendships I treasure. I love communicating with other collectors, and due to this hobby, I have Barbie friends from different parts of the US, in addition to countries like Spain, Italy, and France. My sister and I will be attending the 2003 Barbie Convention in Orlando, and we are both excited because this will be our first time. We are both very much looking forward to this event, and hope to meet lots of people and make new friends. Have a nice day, everyone! 9/18/02

DeeDee in CA~~I loved my Barbies as I was growing up kept everyone in good shape with hopes to give them to my girls one day. So when my oldest daughter was born I was thrilled to have someone to give them to. She loved to play with them when she was little. Then when she was 7 yrs old our house burned down with every thing in it. So we have started over. So we have started over, new dolls and 2 extra daughters to enjoy them with. We have some that never come out of the boxes but one day a month we get them down and talk about them and the story about how and why we got each one and why they stay in a locked trunk. The boys in our family do not understand but they just laugh and watch sports for the day. 9/18/02

Di~~La Barbie y Yo (My Bio) I started collecting because Barbies were the only dolls, who had brown eyes and Black hair, like me. I never wanted blonde dollies, I wanted dollies that helped define who i was. I am a Latina and can say now that i actually do look like a barbie doll! LOL I love her, but I still don't have a single blonde. 9/18/02

Diane/Phoenix~~ I grew up with Barbie - guess that makes me vintage! As a child I had all the original barbies and fashions. As I grew I was more interested in boys than my dolls so I gave them ALL to my niece who was just coming into the Barbie age. When she grew out of them they were packed away and put into storage. Now when my daughter was born I thought I would get the dolls back but that did not happen so In 1991 I started collecting for (with) my daugher. She has a beautiful collection,Mackies,Harlies, and everything in between right up to the Silkies. My daugher is now interested in boys more than her Barbies, but we still redress and I still keep buying. My niece has a daughter of her own now so I KNOW I will never see my childhood Barbies again (a bittersweet situation) 9/18/02

Diana R~~Here's a quick bio of my life as a Barbie collector: I've been collecting for about 12 years, but only seriously for about the past 9 years. I collect the collectible Barbies only - the playlines are cute, but just don't interest me at all. I also don't collect vintage (that's not a matter of not being interested - that is a matter of not having enough $$ to buy vintage! LOL), so I absolutely LOVE the vintage repros. I only wish Mattel would put out two a year instead of just one. There are so many great vintage outfits that they can reproduce. And even though I don't collect vintage myself, I love looking at all the vintage pics that others post here. Some collections are enough to make me drool! My collection reached well over 450 collectible Barbies, but since I started collecting Gene dolls last year in addition to continuing to collect Barbies, I'm trying to cut my Barbies collection down to a more managable amount somewhere around 250 (but it's not easy!). I think I'm down to about 350. I don't WANT to cut down my Barbie collection, but it's a matter of too many dolls, not enough display space. So I'm being very selective of which new ones I buy these days. I used to buy almost every collectible Barbie. I don't do that anymore. But I will always buy the yearly Happy Holiday Barbie. That's a tradition!9/18/02

Donna CA~~Im Donna from Carson California. 40 married for 20 years. 2 daughters 20 and 17 and 2 cats Trixie and Lucy. I have loved barbies since 1970. My fav memory is my 6th grade birthday party, on top of my cake was a treasure chest with instructions to find my Barbie camper (yes the yellow one which I still have) and my Malibu Barbie. I love them both. I collect 70's dolls and most of the newer Barbies. I love the silkstones and the Mackies. And I really enjoy this Barb Talk Board. 9/18/02

Dorothy F~~ Chic by Dorothy ~~ I was born during the depression and didn't have any dolls to play with. A friend of my mom's saved magazines for my mom. My mom cut out the Betsy McCall paper dolls out of the McCalls magazine for me to play with. She pasted the dolls on cardboard so they lasted a long time. She made fabric fashions for my paper dolls from old scraps of old clothes.~~ Times sure have changed. I started collecting fashion dolls when my grand daughter was born in 1980. I'm now a Great grand mother of two, the youngest a girl, so this is my third time around with dolls. LOL.~~ I started customizing dolls after seeing Kayandem's molded hair dolls in Jim Faraone's book Two. I have come up with several different molded hair styles since then. I was a featured artist in Jim's book Three. You can read my molded hair tips in Jim's book Four.~~ I am presently making hats and purses for Barbie. Ella has them posted Chic Hat/Purses. ~~It's so much fun getting to know everyone. Keep safe. 9/18/02

Dove~~ Genes Barbies Dovesdolls at ebay . . Well to start my name is Bobbi I use Dove because one of my favorite songs is Running Bear and the girl in that song is White Dove so I started using Dove names when I first got on the net in chat rooms and have been using it every since, I have used the name Dove longer than I have collected Barbies. I have been married 9 years and have 2 daughters ages 6 and 10. I live in a very small town in Southern Illinois USA. My husband bought me my first 2 collectible barbies in December of '99 for my birthday and christmas. My step-mother never let me play with barbies as a child, so I always wanted to collect them and had told my husband that so he bought me Millenium Princess and 40th Anniversary Barbie. Well I put those up in my room and never really thought much about barbie collecting until one day my husband was needing a new computer so I told him we should check ebay for them then a few days later I thought I wonder if ebay has barbies so I checked. From there I went on a buying spree buying hundreds of dolls. I learned of Vicky's through the ebay barbie board and learned of Sandi and Marsha from here.~~I had kept everything NRFB until I bought some homemade coats from a woman on the ebay board and had to have someone model them so I deboxed a couple of my reproduction dolls. Once started I found that I enjoyed my dolls much more deboxed so now only very few of them are kept in there boxes. My favorite dolls to redress is the silkstones and I would love someday to own all the Bob Mackie dolls. Well I think thats about it for me.... 9/18/02

Earl from FL~~I have always dismissed the Babs as one of those insignificant piece of plastic .Then came along ,Summer in San Francisco Barbie .This one caught my attention and it started a feeding frenzy .Boy! it was after 200 plus dolls.I eventually ,whittled the collection into a few limited editions ones .I started collecting Barbies for the right reason ,that is , I appreciate the minute details and craftmanship similar to that of making a scale model of a train or airplane . Along the way , I fumbled and started to collect for the "increasing value" of any "potential barbie".That disillusioned me in the long run and altogether abandoned the barbs ..... until M'bili by Byron Lars came into the scene this year and this rekindled the passion to collect what really is essential to me . I am back but much wiser ..I also collect GI Joes which is one of my other hobby and also started to like Lionel / Rail King trains. 9/18/02

Elaine in ON~~My name is Elaine Lee. I was born in Hong Kong and moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada when I was 16. I'm 29, married and have a 2 1/2 yr. old daughter.~~I never had a Barbie as a kid. Instead, I had tons and tons of "Barbie clones" because a friend of my mother used to own a factory that manufactured them. Therefore, my mom never bought me the "real thing" that I had always wished for.~~ My addiction started in 1997 when I first saw the Sugar Plum Barbie in the Classic Ballet Series. I totally fell in love with her and then there was no turning back... One doll led to another, and 150+ dolls later, I finally admit that I am a Barbieholic. ~~My girl LOVES Barbies as much as I do. In fact, "Pink" was the first colour she recognized, and "BARBIEEEE!!!" was among the first words that she learnt to speak. I have always kept my dollies NRFB but perhaps one day when she grows up, she will help me debox them!!9/18/02

Elizabeth~~aka dolls4emma on ebay~~ I live in British Columbia, Canada. I began collecting dolls in 1970, when I was 5 years old.~~Two of my most favourite, and the earliest dolls I received were: The talking Julia Barbie and the strolling Jamie (titian) Canadian Sears exclusive Barbie. ~~Over the years I collected many dolls, mostly made by Mattel...and by the time I moved out in 1983, I had over 500 dolls! My collection was great...bubble cuts, Francies, PJ's, skippers, flatsys, kiddles, 3 out the 4 original Blythe dolls, Dawns, Tuttis, Leggies, G.I Joe's, Major Matt Masons...you name it, I probably had it!~~I lugged my collection around with me for 14 moves! Occassionally I would sell the odd doll or get rid of something too big, like houses and car, etc...~~ I NEVER displayed anything from my collection... I "hoarded" & "coveted" it.~~Then, a few years ago when I had a small house fire and it set the sprinklers off...AND I had NO INSURANCE (crazy, I know!) my 2 storey home was completely flooded! ~~I came to the deep realization that I 'could have' LOST EVERYTHING! What I realized most, was that I hadn't lost what was most important to me: my daughter (or myself for that matter).~~ I ended up selling most of my collection...far below it's value monetarily. This was 'before' e-Bay...and the Internet (for me).~~ NOW I have turned a new leaf...a couple of years ago I discovered all the wonderful new dolls in the world, through the Internet! Collector edition Barbies, Candi, Charice, Alysa, Jade, Janay, Gene, Daisy and Willow... I never knew such gorgeous dolls were out there!! I have now been re-collecting (like crazy!) but for a different reason: because I LOVE the beauty of the dolls!! I display, cherish and admire EVERY doll I own...I buy because I love the look of the doll... not because I know it will go up in value or worth. ~~ To help with my new "addiction" I sell fashions that I design, on e-Bay... as well as OOAK dolls I make. I have my degree in Visual Arts and it only makes sense to me to do what I love: create with dolls! ~~ I am more of a "lurker" in VHOTN, and occassionally I post pictures of some of my fashions, and sometimes I buy dolls off others who post here. ~~I don't really have a "dream doll" I would like to own...there are so many out here... perhaps one I couldn't afford, like a Bob Mackie or better still, an 'out of my price range' OOAK Custom doll.~~If you've read to this point...thanks for sticking in there, and I hope this wasn't too long winded! 9/18/02

I am a collector of collectibles. Firechild ~~I am a teenager and have been officially collecting for about 1 year, but I've been drooling over collector dolls since 1997-98 when I saw the promo pics of MAdame Du Barbie and Illusion Barbie from the masquerade gala collection. I remember when I finally went to ToysRus with my Mom and saw Madame Du in the glass display case, it took my breath away, but her price was posted somehing like $250.99 and I told my mom that I would someday save up the money for that doll. Since then she remains the doll who's forever just out of reach... Madame Du is my dream doll. My collection consists of 2 dolls at the moment who I scraped and saved for Ferrari Barbie(the one in the red Leather) and Dusk to Dawn, my first but hopefully not last silkstone. I don't see any reason that I should win any of these dolls but it sure would be nice if ya know what I mean. Well that completes my Bio. CYA. ~~ P.S. Thought I'd include a pic of my dream doll, she's so pretty! 9/18/02

Flo C~~Well of course I am a child of the 60's and I had quite a lot of vintage items such as the skipper and midge and allan and cases and clothes galore. then something happened. I turned l6 and out went the dolls. Don't know why I did that, but they were put away in the storage chest never to be seen again.~~Punch forward 25 years or so. I have two children now. My youngest started receiving barbies as a child as gifts. Then in 1995 it happened. Mattel comes out with their 7th Happy Holiday Barbie which was ever so scarce before Christmas. This doll even made CNN news and into the newspaper. There was such a shortage that they had to issue vouchers so all the little girls of America would not be disappointed by missing this doll. but the vouchers would not issue until after the holidays. Of course I had to find this doll before Christmas so I ventured out into my own little barbie hunt and after about 20 phone calls, finally landed one last doll at a Longs Drug store. I begged the salesman not to sell it to anyone else and I speeded across town and picked up the doll at somewhere int he price of $38. Of course we all know what happened. Up and down the price of that doll went, hovering somewehre around the $200 mark right at Christmas time, and thenplummeting again in the late spring when the vouchers came out. It was the beginning of the end of the Happy Holidays after Mattel issued vouchers again in l996 and over produced to the l997 doll to the max. Of course I still love the holiday ones and wouldn't part with the ones I have. They are gorgeous and so festive. I display them every year at christmas time. ~~Other dolls have followed in my collection, but the HH are among my favorites. 9/18/02

Greg R~~I live in Little Rock, Arkansas. Mostly I am a lurker on this bulletin board, but I have to get my daily fix of BarbTalk! ~~ I have loved Barbie since I was a little kid, I just wasn't supposed to play with them but I did when I had the chance! Can you imagine the collection I would have now if my parents would have let me buy all those barbies that I looked at over and over in the Christmas catalogs! I did manage to buy myself a Quik Curl Kellie and sneak her home. I just had to try out that hair. I had lots of fun with her until mom found her under the bed. The years past and I more or less forgot about Barbie as I grew older. I spent my college years working in theatre especially in costuming. Many years later (1996) a friend where I work, found out I used to make costumes and asked me if I could make outfits for her Barbies. She showed me some Barbie Bazaars and other magazines with articles on Fashion Doll Artists. I immediately started to work and I also joined the local fashion doll club and began collecting. Mom would be very surprised to find out how many barbies are under my bed now!~~ If I could pick out dolls for my collection I would have all the early Mackies, especially Neptune. I like all Barbies that have spectacular costumes or fashion history type of clothes. 9/18/02
