The sun broke through the clouds sending strands of it’s golden locks to dance upon the water’s surface. The clouds that shrouded the brilliant light were a deep gray and steel blue. The lake was smooth and rippled occasionally like silk in a breeze. On the shore sat a boy of about 15. His body was clad in the black of a clerical style. His hands idly slid over the gold of a crucifix that had been draped about his neck on an intricate gold chain. The strong storm laden breeze tugged at the long braid of brilliant chestnut along with the long bangs that draped over his amethyst eyes. The scent of rain drifted into his nostrils causing him to sigh. Rain would be the ultimate release right now. In the rain, he thought, no one can see your tears. He watched as the sun hid her face from the earth’s surface and a slow sheet of rain crossed over the lake approaching the silent figure. Soon the droplets were soaking into his body and causing the silken hair to cling to his lithe form. A tear streaked down his cheek only to be lost in the wave of raindrops falling from the darkened heavens. “War is hell. Life is agony. I’m just a pawn in this game.” the heart shaped face dropped as his figure became obscure to vision due to the rain. “Death is release, but the cowards way out. At least no one can see you cry in the rain.”
A tall slender form stepped out onto the porch of a tiny cabin on the lakeside. The reddish brown hair swept over one eye, hiding the partner of the brilliant emerald on the other side. The tight, deep green turtle neck gripped to his torso like a second skin, as did the light blue jeans adorning his lower body. The chest rose stiffly as he breathed in the scent of approaching rain. The glittering emerald eyes scanned the shore, noticing the figure dressed in black sitting there alone, gazing upon the water. The chilled air ripped down the 15-year-old’s back causing him to shiver slightly. “It’s cold...” The single eye narrowed slightly. He’s going to get wet. The slender shaped face tilted to one side as he leaned against a column on the porch. Something inside of him pushed him forward as the rain began to approach the lone boy with the chestnut hair. Each step felt like an eternity, making his heart feel heavier and painfully stuck in his throat. Pausing as the rain overtook him as well, he stared at the blurring vision of the priest like figure curled into a ball. “Duo...” The words almost came as a trembling child’s would after waking from a nightmare and running to their parents. His body froze as he felt a white-hot tear stream down his rain stricken cheek. Blinking the rest away he choked and shivered in the biting cold. “I... Can’t?” he ran out into the woods and stumbled down a path blindly, reaching for something not quite there.
Duo lifted his head as he heard soft footsteps somehow penetrate the gently pound of the rain. His eyes met the form of a retreating body running with halted grace towards the woods that surrounded them. He caught the reddish-brown color of the rain-slicked hair and the streak of green given off by the turtleneck. “Trowa?” He rose to his feet careful not to slip in the newly drenched dirt. He dropped the golden cross from the fist that held it and stared blankly at the woods a moment. Suddenly he felt the cold wash over his body. It’s freezing out here. “He’ll freeze out here. What’s he thinking?” he choked off. What was I thinking? He swallowed hard then took off after the fleeting grace of the acrobat. Each step caused a sharp intake of breath. The freezing air ripped at his lungs and the cold rain beat on him harder and harder. Trowa showed no signs of stopping, causing Duo to clench his teeth tightly. “Please Trowa, let me catch up with you. What’s wrong? What are you running from?” The words went unheard in the even stronger thrum of the driving rain. Duo could now barely see the wraith like boy.
Trowa drove himself onward in blind chaos. He didn’t have any idea what he was doing or where he was going. He barely felt the painful numbness the frigid rain brought upon him, or the stabbing pain the cold air infringed on him. He was running away. But from what? He heard fleeting steps following his and he stumbled slightly. Who? He wanted to look back, but something drove him onward. Even in the cold rain he felt the hot pain in his eyes. No one can see the tears though. Not in the rain. “Arigato...” he whispered softly. He was relieved for this feeling that no one could see them. Visions of his past clouded his mind, drowning out everything. As the pain filled memories dragged him away from the boy in pursuit, Trowa didn’t see the obstacle ahead. With one fluid motion Trowa tripped and his foot got stuck causing the knee to pop out of joint as he collapsed limply to the rain soaked forest floor. “NO!!” he screamed as the footsteps came nearer. “Please no...” he whimpered as the pain began to become a reality. “Don’t hurt me anymore.” he cried in the voice of a frightened child.
Duo stopped as he ran to stand by the shivering and pleading boy. “Trowa!” Duo called out as he gathered the trembling figure on the ground. “Please... tell me... what’s wrong?” Duo began to shake in perfect tune with Trowa. His slender fingers brushed the wet hair out of the other jaded orb. Both were wide in fear and pain. “Oh Trowa...” He couldn’t tell if the taller boy was crying or not because of the raindrops streaming down the tormented countenance. He pulled the boy closer and engulfed as much of Trowa’s body with his as possible. He hummed to him aimlessly rocking him back and forth. “It’s ok... I got you...”
The brilliant pools of cloudy green gazed up at him as if for the first time seeing the elfin face. “Duo...” the voice was soft and full of relief. “Why are we here? You should be inside... it’s cold...” he shivered as he realized just how cold he himself was. “My knee...” he muttered softly as Duo pulled him closer. “Pain...” He buried his head in the black clothed chest trying to hide whatever foolishness he had shown.
Duo smoothed the auburn hair lightly then scooped him up in his arms. “It’ll be ok Trowa-chan...” with this he started to make his way back to the cabin that felt miles away. “What happened?” he whispered down at the charge in his arms. His amaryllis eyes sparkled with worry and something else that he nor Trowa understood just yet. “You really gave me a scare...”
Trowa looked away a moment then slid his eyes closed. “Gomen, Duo-kun. I don’t know what came over me.” He breathed rigidly cuddling up against the warm chest of Duo Maxwell grateful for it’s warmth. “Just so many things to run away from... I...” he choked then blinked rapidly, proving to Duo that he had been crying.
“I understand.” he smiled warmly at the shivering body. “I have a lot of things that I still run from as well.” He kept his walk at a steady pace as Trowa began to become still and serene. Duo continued to hum just loud enough for Trowa to hear as he made his way back to the shelter. After what felt like forever to him, they emerged from the woods and were making their way to the little cabin on the shoreline. “Almost there...” he whispered.
The head rose from it’s resting place on Duo’s chest to look at the little cabin. It had been their first mission alone together. He just had to screw it up. He closed his eyes once more as he listened to the steady beat of the boy’s heart. How lovely it sounded, so very soothing. “Hai...” his voice was distant and dreamy as he felt their very bodies melt into one another.
Duo pursed his full lips tightly. He was enjoying this close contact with the normally quiet, stoic boy. They entered the cabin and Duo laid the boy on the sofa gently. He ran to get a towel then returned to his side. Slowly and gently, Duo peeled away the green turtleneck, brushing his fingers over Trowa’s bare chest and sides lightly. Trowa shivered. “It’s ok... I’m going to take care of you.” Duo cooed to Trowa incessantly as he worked to pull the jeans off as careful as possible. He didn’t want to hurt the knee any further. After stripping Trowa down he lifted the naked boy up again, wrapped the towel around him temporarily then took him to the bathroom to clean him up with warm water. When he was finished he carried Trowa back to the one bed in the cabin. Nestling Trowa gently down he smiled as he sat and reset the joint and bandaged it with deft hands. “It’s ok Trowa... it’s alright.”
Trowa was becoming very lost in each soft word and consoling. His eyes stayed upon the still wet boy even after he had finished doctoring the injured leg. “Duo... it wasn’t that bad. I could’ve...” he stopped as Duo pressed a finger lightly to his lips while smiling.
“Don’t worry Tro-chan.” he winked. “It’s all good.”
“Duo... you’re still completely soaked.” the green eyes gazed at him with the same look Duo had given him earlier. The eyes locked together and stayed that way for a long moment. Duo’s hair was falling heavily from it’s braid and was trailing loosely over his back and shoulders. Trowa reached out and undid the braid completely, running his fingers through it’s silken length. “You’re beautiful...” Duo’s violet eyes widened slightly then smiled back at him.
“Arigato Tro-chan...” he smiled then removed the wet shirt and undershirt, dropping them to the floor without a second thought. He then stood, with Trowa’s eyes still pinned on him. He removed the rest of the wet clothes and was about to grab a pair of boxers when Trowa cleared his throat. “What’s up?”
“Come here?” he whispered softly. Duo complied and sat on the bed beside him. “Duo-chan...” he caressed the smooth cheek then leaned forward to capture those full lips in a deep kiss. He flicked his tongue over Duo’s lips then pulled back. “Gomen...” he smiled slightly. “I didn’t mean to be such a burden to you... I didn’t want you to see..”
Duo cut him off suddenly. “You know the great thing about rain Trowa...” he smiled brightly. “You can never see tears in the rain...” with these words Duo pulled Trowa back to him and kissed him again passionately, then released him to look into the orbs of emerald.
“Thankyou... Duo-chan...” Trowa smiled back in happiness and relief as Duo claimed his lips once more.
