~ Scene Changes * Lyrics / / Thoughts < > Flash Backs
~ Trowa sat silently at the dinner table drumming his fingertips lightly on the cherry wood surface. It shined and reflected the sole emerald eye that was not hidden beneath the heavy curtain of red brown hair. Sighing softly he rested his cheek in the other hand as he propped his elbow on the table. Pausing, he lifted his wrist to look at the watch adorning its slenderness. / Why are you always late? /
“Monsieur, are you ready to order yet?” Trowa looked up with dull green eyes to the waiter in his black and white uniform.
He shook his head lightly. “Just some water please. I’m still waiting for some one.” The softness of his voice startled the waiter, but he still nodded and hurried away. Boredom crept into his features the longer he stared at the tabletop. / Where are you? / With this thought in mind a loud crashed broke the calm atmosphere of the small elegant French restaurant. Looking up he heard a string of over overdone apologies in the oh so familiar voice, he knew far too well. Sighing again he stood to look in the direction of the crash. There he saw the very person he was waiting for.
“I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to run into you honest!” The teen with the long braid pleaded with the angry waiter and tried to help clean up the mess. Trowa rolled his eyes and plopped back to his seat and covered his eyes with his hand. / Great. / Duo was soon shoed away with the most embarrassed look in his amethyst eyes. Silently he peered around the wall to the table where Trowa sat trying not to be noticed. “Tro-kun!” Hopping around toward the table, Duo slipped a cheery smile over his dismal expression. “May I sit?”
“I do believe I was waiting for you.” Trowa’s eyes never left the surface of the gleaming table. Duo blinked, then slowly lowered himself into the seat across from Trowa.
“I’m really sorry Tro-kun… I didn’t mean to be late again. I…”
Looking up, Trowa forced a small smile to his face. “Don’t worry about it.” He then turned and spoke in low tones to the waiter that approached their table, eyeing Duo angrily. Duo had seen it. That sad and forced look Trowa gave him. Shivering slightly he cast his eyes downward, not caring to catch that cold gaze again.
* Je sais qu'il y a quelque chose à la suite de votre sourire.
~ Duo slowly twirled his fork in the center of his plate, staring at it blankly trying hard not to let the uneasy atmosphere get to him. “You shouldn’t play with your food.” Trowa’s soft, yet authoritative voice broke the silence causing him to quiver from the chill that it caused to run down his spine. Looking up he placed a set of brilliant amaryllis eyes upon the boy he cared so deeply about.
“Gomen ne.” In agony, he kept his gaze unflinching upon the other boy that sat before him. Leisurely, Trowa looked up at him. Duo shivered as he saw the look that demanded for him to act more matured. “Trowa, are you mad at me?”
Rolling his brilliant green eyes he half glared at Duo. “Why do you always think I’m mad at you, hm?” Duo blinked slowly trying to understand what was just said.
“Trowa, you’re treating me like a little child. I know that I am not the most serious person on this earth, but I can’t help but be me.” Duo talked softly trying to keep the emotions in check, but slowly he felt the burning run into his eyes.
“Duo. I never said anything.” The crispness in his voice burned deep into Duo’s heart causing him to sit back abruptly in his chair. Jaded eyes weighed heavily on him almost disapprovingly.
“Forgive me. I’m not feeling well. Please excuse me.” Duo pushed himself from his chair and reached to pull out his wallet. Slowly and quietly he pulled money from it and dropped it on the table. He turned and walked away, never once looking back.
Trowa blinked in utter surprise. /Duo… / Wide green eyes stayed on the retreating back, almost pleading for him to turn around. But… he didn’t. /You’re… leaving me? / When Trowa could no longer see him he dropped his eyes to the table, where the money lie unmoved. His eyes detested it. Scanning it, he saw that he had left enough to pay for his meal as well. Slowly, he closed his eyes. /Mon chou… /
* Je reçois une notion du regard dans vos yeux, yea
~ Each step echoed in the blackness of the evening. The clicks of his black boots on the pavement were a quick and irregular patterned sound. Beating solidly against his chest, his heart tried to jump from the binds that confined it. Duo panted, sending blasts of white mist from quivering pale lips. /Why Trowa? Am I not good enough? / His steps slowed as he came upon his small black car. The metallic paint sparkled in the dim moonlight. It seemed so beautiful, but even that light burned at his eyes. Placing his hands against the cool metal he put all of his weight on it, causing it to move slightly. He knew, the burn in his eyes wasn’t from the light, but he dared not admit what it was from. Leaning forward he pressed his hot forehead to the pearlized metal, hoping the shock would shake the wobbly hurt inside. “Damnit! Haven’t I put everything into this? Haven’t I?” Amethyst hid in fear behind closed eyelids. “I… Love him… so much.”
~ Slowly, Trowa reached his hand across the table and rested two slender fingers on the money and dragged it toward him. Staring coldly at it he felt the stoic mask he had worn so long, crack ever so slightly. His eyes closed instantly, and he inhaled deeply. The lungs in his chest cried in unexplainable pain. /Duo… what is this feeling? You just… ran away… / Trowa stood to his feet lightly and balled his hands into tight fists while gritting his teeth. The waiter approached him and looked to the money on the table.
Barely nodding to the waiter, he didn’t bother to smile. “Bonne nuit!” The waiter sounded so cheery, but Trowa only shivered from the coldness he felt in his heart.
“Merci, vous aussi.” His voice seemed so frigid, even to himself. /Désolé… Duo… / Slowly, with a false sense of calm, he walked away from the table and out of the restaurant.
* Vous avez construit un amour mais cela aime effondre
~ Slipping into his car, Duo slouched deep into the contours of the seat. With clenched teeth he slammed his fists against the steering wheel, then dropped his head upon it as well. Pain seared his knuckles, but he didn’t flinch or try to ease the pain in anyway. “This is all my fault. I can’t do anything right!” Glaring upward, his hazy amethyst eyes stared through the car’s sunroof to see the stars. “If this is some cruel joke, I’m really fed up with it!” As the moments past, the anger dissipated from his countenance, and sadness pierced the fine lines of his smooth youthful face. In a soft whisper, Duo let go for just one moment, “I don’t want to be alone… I don’t want to be without you.”
Turning the key slowly, Duo stared blankly out of the driver side window. His eyes fell upon Trowa’s lithe figure exiting the building, and his heart stopped. The other boy hadn’t seen him, and he didn’t plan on letting him. Quickly, thoughtlessly, he pulled out of the parking space and drove out of the parking lot. /I can’t… I can’t… / Tears streamed down his cheeks as his foot pressed harder onto the gas pedal. The vision that had always been so accurate failed him, and in that instant, it was too late. All he heard, was the screeching tires, and the shattering of glass, then all went dark.
~ Trowa looked up slowly, as he saw a car speed from the parking lot. At first, he rolled his eyes thinking it was some reckless teenager, then it hit him. That little black car, it was Duo’s. The one visible emerald widened as it locked onto the car. /What… is Duo doing? / The sleek vehicle wove into the intersection, and flew with incredible speed… through a red light. The beating of his heart ceased and his voice caught in his throat as a truck slammed into Duo’s car on the driver side. / Oh God… DUO! /
* Votre petit morceau de virages de ciel trop sombres
~ />Sitting on the balcony of his apartment, Duo stared blankly over the urban noise below him. His course fingertips laced into his hair as a smile slowly etched itself across his elfin face. The image of deep emerald reflecting in his eyes was all he could think of. The low tenor, that wasn’t quite a baritone, kept echoing in his ears. And he knew he found the most beautiful thing in the world. Slowly he stretched his legs out from their position against his chest. Placing one bare foot at a time onto the floor, he raised himself from the chair, forcing himself to stand at full stature. His body ached, reminding him why he had been sitting there depressed in the first place. The pain flooded back into his eyes as he glanced one more time over his shoulder, before entering his lonely apartment. Truly, he had wanted to move out of the city, but the job as a Preventer got in the way. /Now… I have to leave that behind. /
Walking slowly, he approached the table where he saw the slip of paper that had brought the walls of his world, crashing down upon him. “A terminal illness… isn’t that what he said…?” Duo peered at the paper again with the doctor’s signature and sighed. “Why am I afraid to die all of a sudden?” The phone rang and caused his head to jerk away from its steady tilt facing the table. Lifting the portable phone off the kitchen counter he pressed the talk button slowly and almost reluctantly. Placing it to his ear he mumbled his hello.
“Salut, Duo.” Trowa’s soft voice traveled into Duo’s consciousness and the smile returned to his pale face. “Comment allez-vous?”
A small giggle escaped the braided teen as he leaned against the kitchen counter. “Trowa… you know I don’t understand you when you speak French.” The light in his violet eyes returned as a soft deep laugh sounded on the other end of the phone.
“I know.” A short pause followed, “How are you feeling?”
Duo was about to burst out and tell him what the doctor had said, then stopped and bit his tongue. “I’m fine. Nothing to worry about.” Casting his eyes to the floor, he heard Trowa sigh softly.
“I have a feeling, you’re not telling the truth.” Duo clenched his teeth but didn’t say anything. “Alright, we won’t talk about it right now.” A soft smile returned again to his lips as he exhaled in relief. /Trowa… I don’t want you to worry about me… / >
* Écoutez votre coeur quand il appelle vous
~ Duo saw nothing but black and the voices he heard, echoed and reverberated deafeningly in his ears. Pain ran through him relentlessly like thousands of knives digging and stabbing into every nerve and pain sensor within his throbbing body. He thought he had opened his eyes, but if he did, he still saw only pitch black. It was a thick darkness and it choked him from movement, talking, even breathing. His consciousness clawed for air, for relief, but found none. Attentive ears picked up a man saying, “Didn’t he see that the light was red?” An obviously young woman cried loudly “Oh my God! He looks mutilated!” Responding to her was another person, gender unknown to him “It doesn’t look like he’ll make it.”
The teen’s insides quivered in fear and pain. /I knew I was going to die, but not like this. / He felt the heat and burning sensation in his eyes, and he knew it was from tears. /I’m crying… I haven’t cried in… / Stopping he swallowed hard. The only thing he wanted was to hear Trowa’s soft voice.
~ Trowa gaped for a moment, wanting to believe what he saw hadn’t happened. His eyes began to sting sharply as they misted over. Too much shock kept the tears from falling, and he was glad. People screamed and chattered relentlessly about him, causing him to ache all the more. No one seemed to care about who the driver had been, or why he had acted the way he did. Many just said, “Stupid teen, must have been drunk.” Trowa took a few awkward steps toward the car that fire fighter’s worked non stop on to pry the teen from the crinkled metal. One called out “Damn.. if he’s alive… I don’t know how…”
Gasping for breath, Trowa nearly fell to the ground, but narrowly caught his balance. Upon reestablishing his equilibrium, he started to walk faster, soon, he was running. Abruptly he stopped near the scene and felt his heart rip in two. Though, the truck hadn’t hit him directly, it hit close enough to bend in shards of metal into the wraith like boy in black. The blood seeped from open wounds and made Trowa nauseated. “Oh God Duo!” Eyes lifted to stare at him, but he didn’t care. He pushed his way through the crowd and fell on his knees beside the stretcher Duo laid limply upon. “Don’t you dare leave me!”
* Ecoute votre coeur il y a rien autrement vous ne
~ >/Dull jade stared blankly at the older man before him. “What do you mean he’s dying?” Trowa couldn’t remove his frigid glare, not even for the sake of the nervous doctor.
“I’m sorry. I told you, we aren’t positive that this is what he has, but the diagnosis fits. We’d know more, but Mr. Maxwell refuses to come in for the tests. His job doesn’t give him enough time.” The man pulled at his white collar and sweat beaded on his brow, praying under his breath, that this young man wouldn’t hurt him for being honest.
Trowa finally dropped his gaze to the while tile floor. Nodding slowly he turned away. /Duo… why do you lie to me? Do you not trust me? / Walking slowly down the hall he caught sight of the elfin boy in question heading toward the sign in nurse’s station. Coldly he walked up behind him and rested a hand on his shoulder. “Duo…”
The young Shinigami spun about and blinked in fear as he met the frigid set of emerald. “T-Trowa… I didn’t see you… What.. are you doing here?”
Closing his eyes slowly, he spoke in low even tones. “The question is… why didn’t you tell me?”
“I… didn’t want you to worry.”
“How could you?” Looking up into Duo’s vivid violet eyes he felt his body quiver. In those eyes, for the first time, he saw pain, sadness, and fear. The brunette dropped his head and his body started to shake. Trowa blinked and all the anger dissipated from his thoughts. In slow steady movements, he wrapped his arms about the shorter boy and held him close to him. Duo didn’t cry, but he trembled so badly, it shook Trowa as well.
Duo slowly slipped his arms around Trowa, and held to him like he was the only thing real in his life. “I’m so sorry Trowa… I didn’t…” He tried hard not to tremble, but he couldn’t. Looking up he caught Trowa’s eyes. They were confused and yet hungry, aching to help the boy in his arms. A small smile crept into Duo’s eyes and lips. “I love you Trowa…”
“Je t'aime.” >
* Pouvez je faire ne sait pas où vous allez et
~ /I was so excited… / Duo felt cold and numb. /I wanted to tell him… / The pain was replaced with an empty frigidness. /The good news… /
~ Trowa sat in the emergency room of the hospital, with his head in his hands. /Why? Why is this happening? This is… / He bit his tongue as the tears threatened to fall. /This is my fault… I shouldn’t have been so cold… / Looking up he saw Heero and Quatre walk up slowly, hand in hand. Tears gleamed on Quatre’s pale creamy cheeks. “Trowa!” The blonde let go of his lover’s hand and ran over to Trowa, falling to his knees in front of him. “What happened?”
~ The noises about him now, were mere whispers that grew increasingly softer. /Just when I thought… / He finally realized he was in a surgery room and his heart jumped minutely, too tired to do much more. /I was going to live… /
~ “Duo… we were…” Trowa’s voice was barely above a whisper. Looming over him stood Heero. His cold prussian eyes stared heavily on him, only making him feel all the more breathless. “We were just having dinner. Duo asked me to meet him there. He had something to tell me…”
Quatre patted his shoulder softly and sighed. “It’s ok Trowa..”
“I was short and cold… he got upset and left… I didn’t even listen to what he wanted to say.” His voice was so quiet, Quatre had to lean in closer to hear.
“Then… it’s your fault?” All eyes shot up to Heero. Quatre gave a disapproving look, but Trowa merely looked away, pleading with himself not to cry.
* Je ne sais pas pourquoi mais écoute votre
~ >/”I am pleased to tell you Mr. Maxwell, that there is no terminal illness.” The doctor smiled and handed a few charts to Duo whom gaped at them with wide sparkling amethyst eyes. “It seems, you have a few ulcers, acute cases of migraine headaches, and almost constant nausea. But, those problems are merely due to stress and over work.” The doctor smiled at the teen that flipped excited through the paper work. “I’m glad you finally quit your job so we could do these tests. You have had me very worried.”
The bright eyes looked up at the old doctor, a smile spread broadly over his face. “Do you think I can go back to work then?”
“Now Mr. Maxwell, you still need to rest. Take a month or more, get well. Then I’ll sign a release for you to go back to work. We need to think about you first.” Taking the paperwork from Duo he smiled slightly. “You never did say what kind of job you had.”
A grin spread over the impish boy’s face. “I’m a Preventer.”
The doctor smiled. “No wonder you have stress. Alright, I’ll get my nurse to give you a shorter statement on your new diagnosis. You’ll be just fine my boy.” As he walked from the room, Duo couldn’t help but fall backward onto the table smiling from ear to ear. /I so can’t wait to tell Trowa! / >
* Coeur avant de vous le dites au revoir
~ The voices soon stopped and Duo felt all alone. /This… please… tell me it isn’t… / He ached, and yet he was numb. Exhaustion plagued his very being. /Death? / Wishing for some sort of comfort, any, he allowed himself to get lost in his sorrow. /How unfair… but… it is my own fault. At least now… Tro-kun doesn’t have to worry about me. / He felt so lost.
After a while, he heard voices again. It sounded like Heero. “Quatre, stop feeling sorry for Trowa. He needs to handle this on his own.”
“Heero… This isn’t his fault. We shouldn’t point the blame. You’re being cruel.” Quatre’s strained and sad voice pleaded with the other boy he loved, but the pleas fell on deaf ears.
“Quatre. Duo is strong. In order for him to crack like that, someone had to have hurt him, really bad.”
“But still! Stop putting it all on Trowa!”
“Look… I’m sorry. I’m just really put out over this. First, Duo leaves the Preventers, then he disappears, leaving no way for us to contact him. The next thing I know, he’s laying in this hospital bed, a literal vegetable!” Heero’s voice rose slightly, as the anger was clear and evident in his voice. “Now… Trowa won’t even come in here. Don’t you think that’s a little cold?”
“Heero…” Quatre faded off and Duo just knew they were now in each other’s arms. It made him wish to cry. /I want to feel Trowa hold me… at least… I’m not dead… That… should make me happy… right…? Trowa… why aren’t you here? /
* Parfois vous vous demandez si ce combat vaut la peine
~ Trowa sat silently in the darkness. The moon had already faded from the deep blue velvet sky. Pulling his knees to his chest he curled himself into a ball. His figure looked so childish, so full of fear. Trembling, he hid his cold emerald eyes behind his bangs. “Duo… I didn’t mean to hurt you…” His body trembled more and more the longer he sat there, to the point that tears formed in the corners of his eyes.
Around the corner he heard the chatter of the hospital’s emergency room. The shrill sirens, the emergency alarms, and persistent voices on the intercom only made his state of mind worse. Silently he cursed God. /If there is a God… then you are cruel. And I have no reason to care about you. You’re taking away the one thing I was sure of in life. /
In the midst of his thoughts, he heard footsteps coming in his direction. He didn’t bother looking up. Emotions and pain had exhausted him to the point of not caring. The soft footsteps stopped before him, but still he made no effort to see who it was. “Well, Barton, you are the last person I thought would run away from this sort of situation.” It was Wufei. The Chinese youth’s baritone voice was well known to him, just like Duo’s rich tenor.
“You don’t understand then.” The frigid edge in his voice caused him to choke.
“You are wrong. I know what you are doing. You’re running, and at the worst possible time as well.” Wufei slowly crouched on the cool pavement beside his friend. “I don’t care what Yuy says, I know this isn’t your fault. And I know, that you are most likely the only one that could pull that baka through this.” A smirk spread over his face when Trowa lifted his head to glare angrily at him. “Good, I knew you cared about Maxwell. Then… why are you out here?”
Trowa’s mouth fell open slightly then he dropped his eyes to the pavement. “I don’t deserve to speak to him, much less see him again.”
“That’s a load of crap and you know it.” Wufei’s voice was sharp and unrelenting.
“Qu'est-ce que vous avez?” Trowa lashed out bitterly, wanting only to get the pain out of his heart that seared him like a brand.
“I know enough, Barton. And I know, if you don’t go in there, we’re going to loose the best part of us.” Slowly, Wufei rose to his feet and turned away. “Don’t do it for us, do it for you. Do it for him.”
“Duo… Désolé…” Trowa looked up at the night sky, as the darkness had slowly begun to fade. /I don’t know what to do… Should I go in there? /
* Les moments précieux tout sont perdu dans la marée, yea
~ >/The door flew open, and in a flurry of black and chestnut, Duo ran into his apartment. No time was taken to carefully remove his jacket and set it aside, he just ripped it off and threw it blindly onto the couch of his tiny den. The pale color of his face literally glowed as he cast his sparkling eyes over his home in a whole new perspective. /This, is how it should have been all along. / The smile broadened further as he ran over to the phone. Lifting the receiver, his happiness only grew in his heart. /Oh Trowa! I can’t wait to tell you! / With knowing hands he dialed in the number without even looking, and listened to the low-keyed ring impatiently.
“This is Trowa Barton. I’m not available at the moment. Leave a message. Au revoir.” Instantly Duo melted. There was no way he was going to leave the good news on a measly recorder.
With a deep sigh, he waited for the beep. At it’s shrill tone he paused, then smiled softly, keeping his emotions in check. “Tro-kun! Hey there! Let’s go out tonight, please!? I so need to tell you something and I’m not about to tell you on an answering machine.” He stopped and made a check through his mind of the places Trowa liked. “La Madeline at 8pm, please come! Ja!” Quickly dropping the phone on to the counter he grinned. “I now have four hours to get ready.” Without another thought he tore through the apartment straight to his closet, still glowing in excitement. “I HAVE to look my best!” He laughed softly and pulled out his favorite black leather jacket and long sleeve cerulean blue turtleneck. Laying them on his bed he trotted over to his dresser and pulled out his tightest black jeans with an evil grin. /Tonight, Trowa… will be a night to remember. / >
* Qu’Ils sont loin balayés et rien n'est quel est semble
~ >/Pale dwindling sunlight filtered into the small office, spilling over furniture and it’s occupant eerily. Trowa’s eyes were closed as he leaned against the frame of the window. A red light blinked persistently on his phone, reminding him that he had voice mail. Sighing softly he pushed himself away from the window and lifted the black receiver off its cradle. Leisurely he put it to his ear and pressed the button connecting him to the voice mailbox.
Listening quietly he rolled his eyes. The dull emeralds seemed to grow even darker. It was because he was tired. Silence was what he had yearned for all day. /Duo… / A soft sigh slipped past his lips as he sat the phone down. /I suppose… I can’t let him sit there thinking I’m going to come. / Turning his head he looked at his clock and took a deep breath. “Two hours at most.”
Looking down he noted that his uniform wouldn’t do for the restaurant Duo picked. Slipping his jacket off he fell deep into thought. /What does he have to tell me? / He took long, quick strides over to the small closet and pulled out a deep hunter sweater and his dark blue jeans. /I can never tell with him. He always has that cheery tone to his voice. / Slowly he unbuttoned his white dress shirt as he leaned against the wall and stared at the ceiling. The day had been rough on him. He had taken far too heavy of a load. It had been a result of Duo’s leaving the Preventers. Trowa had been glad, that Duo had decided to finally take care of himself, but he was also bitter from the extra work being dropped on him. His expression changed to that of discontent and subtle anger. /Why must I run about for a bungling baka any ways? / The emerald eyes dropped to the floor. This time, he refused to admit why, and all the happy times seemed too far away. /You’re chasing a foolish dream, Trowa… No one lives happily ever after. / >
* Le sentiment d'est à vos rêves.
~ Listening intently, Duo tried hard to see if Trowa was around, but his attempts were to no avail. /Trowa… all I want is to hear your voice. / Coldness began to settle on his heart and he wondered if he should let go or keep clinging on to life. /Trowa? Where are you? /
Softly in the background he heard voices. There were so many of them. One, he knew was Quatre, and one he distinguished as Wufei. He assumed Heero was still there, but he wasn’t sure. All that truly mattered though was whether or not Trowa was there. The aches he felt through out his body confused him. He didn’t know if they were just because of the wreck, or if they were from the emotional pain he was experiencing. “Did you talk to him?” Duo’s ears perked up slightly at Heero’s voice.
“Yes I did.” It was Wufei, and his voice was anything but pleased.
“And is he coming in?” The small voice of Quatre broke in almost apologetically.
“I don’t know… from the looks of it he has no intention of coming…”
He was cut off as Heero spoke in a low-keyed voice. “That baka has no right to even be loved by Duo. Doesn’t he even care about the state he’s in?” Heero made another comment, but Duo made no move or attempt to hear it. Coldness started to blacken and chip away his consciousness.
“I’m beginning to wonder if Trowa ever really cared about him. You think maybe he was just feeling sorry for Maxwell?” Wufei seemed to growl softly in anger, but it wasn’t his tone of voice that sent Duo’s heart spiraling into blackness, it was his words.
“Honestly you two… stop it. Even if that is true, and it isn’t, you shouldn’t be talking about it around Duo. Have you no respect for….” Duo totally blocked out the rest of Quatre’s statement. He cared to hear no more.
The blackness started to close in on him and the coldness seemed to pump through his veins. /Yeah… Duo no baka. / Slowly he felt something searing his cheek and he knew he was crying again, but his friends were too busy arguing to notice. /You should have seen it yourself. He doesn’t care. / More tears burned his cheeks, but even that pain seemed to numb as he slipped away. /I have nothing left here to live for. Nothing at all. /
* Et il y a des voix qui veut à est entendu
~ Trowa stumbled blindly from the alley he had been sitting in. The muscles in his legs screamed in agony and protest wanting to give out on him as he took each painful step. /Duo… wait for me… / Quickening his steps slightly, he continued to stumble onward feeling a queasy uneasiness in the depths of his stomach. Something told him, that time was not on his side and that if he didn’t get there soon… Duo would be no more.
Blindly he entered the elevator and leaned heavily against its metal wall. Fumbling slightly, he attempted to press the button to the floor Duo was being held on. When it finally came to a stop, he lurched from it and barely caught his balance. Clouding his vision, were the tears, that would not be denied any longer. He knew they would fall, and they would fall soon. Coming upon the door to the room he pushed it open and nearly fell inside. Fighting his tired body, he pressed passed all his friends and fell to the bedside staring wide eyed in utter fear at the young American on the bed. Bandages covered most of his body, but luckily there were no major head injuries, and the precious braid was untouched.
“Oh Duo… Désolé… Désolé…” The tears began to poor heavily from his jaded eyes. They’re heat burned his cold cheeks and he winced. Reaching out he took one of Duo’s hands and cried even more at how cold it felt.
The others in the room blinked at him, surprised at the dramatic entrance he made. Quatre smiled softly then grabbed Heero’s arm. Heero nodded then looked to Wufei with a grim look, whom then also nodded. The three quietly exited the room, leaving Trowa to be alone with Duo. They knew, this was the only way, and Duo wouldn’t pull through, without Trowa.
Brushing the hair from his eyes as best he could, Trowa didn’t even bother trying to stop the tears. “S'il vous plaît… don’t leave me… oh please…” His voice cried out desperately as the tears poured from his bloodshot eyes.
~ In the deep cold darkness, Duo brooded in the remaining shards of his consciousness. Soft murmuring in the background was all he heard. /How much longer must I wait? Let me die already! / Soon the murmurs died away, and only one voice was left. It made him curious and he strained to hear it. /They all left… Why? Who stayed behind for me? / The words, like choked pleas, and the voice, strained with tears, and somewhere he heard the words that made his mind sink into memories long put aside. “J’taime, Duo. I love you so much…”
* Si beaucoup d'à mentionne, mais vous ne pouvez pas trouver les mots.
~ >/Lying on the bed, was the long lithe figure, Duo loved so dearly. Moonlight bathed his pale smooth skin, causing it to glow a light silver. Propping himself on one elbow he looked over his love with the reddish brown hair sweeping over his right eye. The emeralds hid now behind closed eyelids, but he knew Trowa was not sleeping. Leaning in closer he pressed his lips with feather lightness to Trowa’s cheek and in a soft purring tone, he whispered in his ear. “What are you thinking about my love?”
The eyes fluttered open, and a small elegant smile spread over his lips. Turning his head toward Duo, his green eyes sparkled in the night’s light. “You.” Orbs of jade stared warmly into the sparkling stones of amethyst.
Reaching a soft hand out, Duo brushed Trowa’s bangs out of his face with gentle fingertips. “Oh? What about me? Good I hope.”
Trowa laughed softly then slipped trembling fingers into Duo’s long silken hair. “Duo… I want to tell you something.” The impish like boy nodded slowly. “I know… I’m difficult to get along with sometimes. I’m so quiet, and you probably think, it’s because I’m frustrated, angry, or even upset with you. Duo… that’s just me. It has nothing to do with that. I admit, I get frustrated easily, but you of all people know, that a terrible past can cause a person to have defenses.” Trowa tighten his grip slightly on the hair intertwined in his fingers. “I want you to know. That… even when things seem bad, or I may seem cold… I love you Duo. No matter what, I will always love you. It’s just hard for me… to express my feelings. Please don’t be angry with me.”
A small smile crept onto Duo’s elfin face as he scooted closer to the other boy. “I understand Trowa. I love you too. And I will love you even after I die. I’m in this forever.” Cupping Trowa’s chin in one hand he leaned in and captured the taller boy’s soft lips with his own, kissing him with deep love and passion. /Trowa… I can’t live without you… / >
* L'odeur de magie, la beauté qui est été
~ Trowa dropped his head heavily onto the hospital bed. He could no longer stand to see the one he loved bandaged up and covered in tubes, IV’s, and the oxygen mask. The sight made him so ill it was unbearable. The monitor beep slower and slower, and he just knew, his love was letting go. He’d come too late. So cold, the hand he held so tightly was so lifeless and cold. Shivers ran throughout his body as the tears began to build more heavily in his eyes, and his body became wracked in sobs. For a moment, Trowa couldn’t hear anything anymore. The room just went completely silent. Though, he didn’t know, if Duo was gone… or if his heart just blocked all of the noise out of his consciousness.
~ /It’s you… isn’t it Trowa… you came? / Once more he felt the tears pour from his eyes, but Trowa didn’t see. It didn’t matter though. Trowa was here. That’s all that counted. All he wanted to do was stop all of his love’s tears and kiss the remaining ones away. He ached because he couldn’t move or hold the slender boy he wished only to love and comfort. He struggled for control, but the blackness was so thick it kept pulling him back down. /No please… let me live… he needs me… / The thought of not being able to call out to his Trowa… crushed his heart. /Is there no going back now? What have I done? /
~ Raising his eyes Trowa stared at the lovely pale elfin face. “Duo… I… J’tadore… I love you…” He blinked the mist from his eyes, and finally saw the sparkling tears streaming down the young Shinigami’s face. Standing he wiped them away softly and carefully. “You can hear me… can’t you?” Lowering himself back into the chair beside the bed he smiled sadly. “I’ll love you Duo... always… please forgive me…” Suddenly, he felt a light squeeze from Duo’s hand and it caused him to look up into his face one more time, this time to see slitted amaryllis eyes. “Oh God… Duo!”
Duo smiled happily, but in pain. He tried to speak but the words didn’t come. Watching Trowa closely he smiled and mouthed the words he wanted to say. “I love you Trowa… stay with me…”
Nodding slowly, tears began to fall again in a wave of happiness. “Always Duo… Always.”

English Lyrics
Listen to Your Heart – Roxette
I know there's something in the wake of your smile,
I get a notion from the look in your eyes, yea,
You've built a love but that love falls apart,
Your little piece of heaven turns too dark,
Chorus:
Listen to your heart when he's calling for you
Listen to your heart there's nothing else you can do
I don't know where you're going and I don't know why
But listen to your heart before you tell him goodbye
Sometimes you wonder if this fight is worthwhile
The precious moments are all lost in the tide, yea
They're swept away and nothing is what is seems
The feeling of belonging to your dreams.
And there are voices that want to be heard
So much to mention, but you can't find the words.
The scent of magic, the beauty that's been
When love was wilder than the wind.
