A Promise to the Ill Fated

Disclaimer: GW isn’t mine, though I wish it were... please don’t sue! Nytalia and this Shinigami are mine though, I made them up! ^^;;

Notes: I don’t know if there is a Tenshi no genki in mythology, but I used her anyway... And sorry if I offend anybody with some of the twists I made in the GW story line, I’m sorry if I offend anyone. Not to mention how I wrote Shinigami’s part. Please bear with me!! ^_^

~ After Colony 180

Green eyes swirled in brown flickered open at the feel of white light sliding over the pale white face. A slender arm reached forward to flex long, lean fingers in the rays of light. Morning. The brown hair with tones of black whipped about the silhouette in the strong breeze. “Morning Nytalia.”

The dull hazel eyes swept over the white clad shoulder to see the figure in a robe of black. “Tenshi no shi. Why are you here?” The body spun about to reveal the tight, white kimono trimmed in silver. A woman with skin whiter than the light from the rising sun. She observed the angel of death calmly.

A sudden deep and rich laugh filled the air between them. “Is that anyway to greet me Tenshi no genki?” He approached her side and looked on to the rising sun. “Haven’t you been absent long enough Nytalia? Shouldn’t you be doing what you do best? Bringing hope to all the lost?” he smirked beneath the hood of the robe.

“That’s a matter of opinion Shinigami.” she grimaced as she looked at the sun as well. “You know I come to see the sunrise in this place each day. It reminds me of who I am, or should I say who I was?” she blinked slowly. A hand rested on her shoulder. Her eyes flickered open to see the angel of death facing her. “My old friend... you know me better than anyone, yet I still feel so very empty.”

He gripped her shoulder lightly. “Nytai-chan... you shouldn’t have been placed with such a responsibility, but you were chosen. Your predecessor... your mother... she...” the deep voice broke off in almost a choke.

“I know Shi-chan.” she dropped her head. “How did you get away with it? Is it only the female angels that must pay in such a way?” His hand loosened its grip and fell away. She felt empty again. “Shi-chan?”

“Ano... Your mother was a... she was wonderful. You have to fill her footsteps. As for my son, he will suffer the same fate some day. I only regret that he is to suffer much in his life. His human mother has paid for my sin... I cannot take care of him... I... I’m... Tenshi no shi... I am Shinigami.” He fell silent and breathed heavily. It was a burden for them to stay in human form, especially for him. He was the oldest of all the angels.

“Gomen Shi-chan. You were the one that took care of me. You watched and made sure I did well in my duties. Even though... even though I am half human.” She grimaced and blocked out the pain. “Why is it you have come to me once more?”

“Nytai-chan... You are the angel of light and life. You are the bringer of hope, the encourager of the lost. The others and I have decided that it is time to help you. Though... this will be hard on you for a while.” He looked at the now risen sun on the horizon. “Four have been chosen to suffer greatly all of their lives, in order to save the future. What will be difficult for you is that you have to neglect their need for love. You are to chose the fifth.” Nytalia turned to him in shock. “They will be the bringers of the future peace. But it won’t happen if you interfere in their planned lives. I am only here to ask if you will chose my son as the fifth.”

“Shi-chan... ofcourse... I have seen much wonder in the young boy. But... they have to suffer?” she swallowed hard.

“Yes... it’s been decided. Arigato Nytai-chan. I owe you.” with this the black figure disappeared into the air that surrounded them.

/I have to ignore their suffering... in order to bring peace? / Her heart pounded. /Who are the other four? / She held out a pale hand, which emitted an orb of yellowish light. With in the orb a picture of a small Chinese boy with ebony hair and almost black eyes lay in the arms of a smiling mother. The mother was talking to the little one in soft tones “My little Chang Wufei of the Dragon Clan.” the image faded leaving Nytalia to stare on. /He will suffer, but at least he will have a family. His suffering will come in the future. /

The orb began to glow brightly again showing a baby in a basket with reddish brown hair and emerald eyes. A toddler was hanging over its sides tickling at the little infant’s nose. A male voice came “Now Catherine, no teasing your little brother.” the little red head girl giggled then hopped away. This image faded, as Nytalia sighed closing her eyes. /He will suffer greatly. /

Another image appeared in the yellowish light to show a baby being held in a man’s arms. The man is crying to himself softly due to the loss of the mother. The baby had aqua blue eyes and a tuft of blonde hair on top of his head. “Your mother was brave little Quatre.” the sad voice pounded through her head. /How sad. He will be so very lonely. /

The next image left her speechless. Within the orb she saw a baby lying in a ditch on the L1 colony. His deep brown hair was ruffled from neglect and the cobalt eyes were filled with silent tears. /Poor child! / She cried out to the boy within the bounds of her mind. /How awful... But... he will be so very strong. / Her eyes began to water as she pressed the vision away.

Closing her eyes tightly she opened them to look once more, this time to find the little Shinigami. The baby laughed lightly in the frail arms of a dying woman. / How much longer does she have I wonder. / Nytalia cringed. /Is this how it was for me? / The little strands of chestnut hair glistened in the pale lights of L2 along with the baby’s amaryllis eyes. / You will know how it feels to be me. So sad, but true. Why did he ask me to pick you? / She pushed the image away as she saw the shadow of Shinigami appear in the background, scythe in hand.

The orb disappeared leaving her to feel absolutely cold. /Am I strong enough to ignore their suffering? / Shaking her head she closed her eyes. /I have no choice. I must do as the others have decided. / She shifted and looked to the earth, it was so beautiful. She then looked toward space; it was so distant and cold. All that were chosen... were from the depths of space. /I will do my part to the best of my abilities. / With that, like an apparition, she dissolved into the moist air of morning.

~ After Colony 185 - Trowa

“Hey No-name!” a gruff voice called to the little boy that sat to the outskirts of the small mercenary camp. The man laughed. “What kind of a name is that anyway?” he walked over and kicked him in his side, causing the little auburn haired boy to topple over. The child made no noise and stared blankly out into the night. The man shrugged then left him there alone.

The boy’s eyes shimmered but no tear was shed. /Why am I here? Why don’t I have family... a name? / The boy closed his eyes momentarily. The emerald orbs flickered to life again as the sound of the rustle of feathers was heard near where his head lay on the cold ground. Sitting up he saw a beautiful white owl. It stared up at him quietly, with sadness in its great eyes. /What’s an owl doing here? / Looking closer he noticed the odd color of greenish brown its eyes appeared to be. /That’s not natural... / He brushed a hand over his forehead to get the reddish hair out of his eyes.

The owl shivered causing its feathers to ruffle a bit. It waddled slowly up to the lone boy. /He’s so young. If only I could talk to him. He’s in so much pain... / “Who.... who...” the owl chirped somewhat sadly up into the green eyes.

“Me?” the boy seemed stunned at its behavior. “You’re weird.” the white bird turned it’s head almost completely over. He reached out cautiously and ran his fingertips over the silken feathers. “So soft.”

“Whoooo....” cooing so soothingly the boys eyes widened causing his lips to curl upward ever so slightly. /There’s the smile I knew he had... / the great hazel eyes widened. She was going to get in trouble, but didn’t care at the moment. /He deserves one peaceful moment. / Her soft feathered body cuddled up next to the boy and lazily dropped her eyes closed as he fell asleep. /Just for one night. /

“NYTALIA!” Shinigami yelled into the pale ear of the girl standing in the woods watching the mercenary group pack up. “What were you thinking!!??”

“Ano... Shi-chan... Admit it... one moment of peace won’t destroy your plans. He was so... so miserable.” Nytalia smiled after the little auburn headed boy known as No-name. “I couldn’t help it. At least I didn’t talk to him.” She smiled at Shinigami innocently. “For all he knows, I’m just some crazy bird, or a figment of his imagination. It won't hurt anything.”

He dropped his head lightly. “Alright Nytai-chan. I’ll deal with it this time. Like you said. It won’t hurt anything. Just try not to interfere, or peace will never come.” He disappeared leaving her to watch the boy walk away looking over his shoulder occasionally, looking for the white owl.

~ After Colony 185 - Quatre

The blonde boy skipped to his new school happily humming as he went. His bright aqua eyes shined at all the people, who stared at him coldly. There were whispers all about him “That’s the little rich kid! What a brat.” Slowly the little boys smile faded and the musical noise no longer came from his throat. He wobbled over to a tree on the school grounds where he sat beneath it crying. “Why does every one make fun of me!?” he whimpered softly.

“Hey you! Wimp!” two big laughing boys came running over to the small blonde. “You’re the little rich kid!” they scowled at him as he rose his golden head. His features became sad mixed with anger. “Go home you pansy. We don’t want your kind. Run home to Daddy!”

The big boys advanced on him threatening him. The little boy lashed his fists in blind defense, only to be slapped down by the older boys. “Leave me alone!! Please..... oh....” the boy cried softly while still hiding his tears. “I don’t want to fight.”

As the blonde started to waver from consciousness, he heard a low undertoned growl. The boy’s aqua eyes slid open to see a big white wolf standing between him and the two big boys. They were cowering away at the sight of the large white fangs and bristling, silver white fur. Soon they were in a dead run toward the school building leaving the wolf to slowly smooth its fur and sigh. The blonde raised to an elbow drowsily looking at the wonderful animal that saved him. “What are you doin here?”

Turning around slowly with graceful steps, the large animal walked over to the downed boy and licked the cut on his cheek softly. The boy giggled softly. /He’s a cutey. I’m really gonna get it this time. / The animal sighed again then nudged the boy to his feet allowing the boy to lean on her. /Off to school with you. /

“You’re pretty.” the boy chimed happily. “I’m Quatre!” the animal whimpered softly in response. “Thanks!” as they reached the door, the animal fell behind him and nudged him onward. Giggling, the boy waved and disappeared into the door.

The animal heaved in deep breaths. The great greenish brown eyes shined in the artificial lights of L4. /Be well little Quatre./ With that, she disappeared into the air leaving no trace of ever being there.

In the air a soft reprimanding breeze whispered softly “You’d better watch your step Nytai-chan...”

~ After Colony 186 – Wufei

“I don’t want to be a scholar! I want to be a fighter and be courageous!” The ebony eyes shined brightly bearing into the elder. The fire within him showed clearly around him in an unmistakable aura.

The elder patiently summoned up his most authoritative voice and fumed at the small six-year-old. “You will be as I have said boy. No arguments will be heard on the subject!”

The boys fist clench tightly together as he ran from the elder and into a flower field. “I don’t want to spend my life reading all the time!” he furiously stared up at the artificial colony sky. “It’s injustice...” he whispered softly. The boy plopped down onto the grass amidst the flowers. His eyes burned but no moisture was allowed to form. Something brushed across his face softly causing him to open his eyes in surprise. There before him sat a sleek white kitten with silver tipped fur.

“Mew...” the noise sounded muffled, but she tried. From her small mouth was a satiny daisy, which she dropped on his chest softly.

Wufei picked it up and felt himself smile. “Aren’t you a strange and intelligent cat.” he scratched under her chin as she began to purr softly. He looked over her unique fur, then at her hazel eyes. “Unusual indeed.”

Curling into a ball on his chest she purred even louder. /I’m a sneaky one I know... but I’m not strong enough to leave them to suffer all the time... /

“Think I should just accept my fate, kitty?” Wufei asked dreamily as he drifted off.

“Meow...” she affirmed the question.

“You’re right... I will..” with a yawn he drifted off to sleep while holding the white satin like daisy in his hand. The kitten rose then walked slowly away.

The sleek white cat jumped into he waiting arms of the black robed figure in the shadows. He stroked her back softly and laughed dryly. “It would seem that you convinced him to follow his fate. Now I can’t be mad at you.” He sighed. “You truly are a handful Nytai-chan...”

~ After Colony 186 – Heero

The empty eyed child followed the man before him. He looked void of all emotions and his cobalt eyes were dull. The man’s voice droned on in his small ears as he spoke about the rules and regulations of being an assassin. “Now wait here...” The man walked away leaving the battered and bruised boy all alone. At this point you could still see his somewhat tender heart. The boy sat on a bench on the streets of the colony and propped his head on his hands.

Behind the boy the pale woman in white appeared and gazed sadly upon the boy. She sighed under her breath. /How sad, he’s never known love or hope of any kind. / She shivered as the cobalt eyes turned to stare at her coldly. /Oh crap... I was too careless... / She stood stone still.

He studied her. She was so very pale. Her hair was almost the same color as his. “Who...”

She shook her head in fluid motion. With this she pressed her slender finger to her crimson lips.

The cobalt eyes wavered slightly as her soft light started to filter into his desolate heart. “Are you an angel?” his body quivered. He stood and moved toward her. He looked so lost.

/The little boy in him is reaching out... I can’t help it anymore. / She jumped toward him and embraced him warmly. “You’re so strong little one... you’ll be alright...” her voice was soft and velvety. She watched the dark head bury itself in her stomach. /You’ll have to be... / She kissed the top of his head causing him to shiver from the rush it gave him.

“Please...” his voice was barely a whisper “don’t leave me alone.” Her eyes began to water. He looked up at her face. It glowed in the dim light. She smoothed his hair causing him to smile his last childhood smile.

“Sweet child... whenever you feel as though you can’t make it, remember this feeling, remember that love is possible. Even though you don’t see me. I’m here.” She smiled radiantly then leaned down to kiss the forehead that was beaded with sweat. Hugging him a bit tighter she released him. “Never forget.” She stepped back from him. “I’ll always be here.” with those words she disappeared leaving him there alone.

“Always be here. I’m not alone...” he slumped to the ground and closed his eyes, capturing the feeling the angel had given him for a little longer. “My angel...” he whispered to himself as he rocked his body to sleep.

Nytalia sat alone crying. Her sobs were loud and uncontrolled. Never had she felt such anguish in one human being. Never had she been restricted from showing some sort of love to them. In the same manner she began to rock her body in continuous motion. “Oh that poor child... dear lord... I need strength.” she closed her eyes and buried her head in her knees.

“Nytai-chan...” the deep voice went unheard in her ears. He had been sent once more to reprimand her, but this time he couldn’t do it. This time it was different. This time he felt the sadness as well. “Gomen nesai, Nytalia-san. I can’t take any of this back.” He trembled then turned away. “None of us can.”

~ After Colony 186 – Duo

In a dark alley way of L2, sat a small figure curled into the fetal position. Whimpers occasionally escaped his thin lips under the mop of unruly chestnut locks. His breathing was irregular and fast. A pale hand touched the sleeping figure softly. She felt all the unconscious thoughts and shuddered. He was having a very horrible nightmare. /So this is the son of Shinigami? / She smiled wanly. /He’s a cutey. /

“Nytalia?” a deep voice came from behind her. “What are you doing?”

She paused and smiled “So... Shinigami-sama does keep an eye on his only son.” She turned to him. “You know he’s very lonely and afraid. His dreams are about death.” she watched the black clad angel wince. “Must ring a bell, ne?”

“It doesn’t matter.” He lowered his head. “I had no choice but to take his mother’s life. It’s what I have to do. I am the angel of death. I can’t show him love. I can’t show him anything. What’s worse is that, this is nothing to what he is going to experience in the near future.” he stopped and watched the small boy. “Nytalia, I won’t stop you... give him some memory of love to help him carry on. I will take the blame this time for you.”

She gasped and he took her hand pleadingly. “Shi-chan...” she breathed lightly.

“I do love him.” he sighed softly. There was a tenderness that even she had never seen in him. “I believe he, like the others, deserves one peaceful memory.” Releasing her hand his pale hand caressed her cheek. “Please, do this one thing for me...”

She took his hand in hers and smiled. “I will.” with these words he disappeared. Turning back to the boy she smiled. In the process of kneeling beside him she became the image of a child that was seven years old. Her long dark hair brushed the dirty pavement as she leaned over the boy. “Wake up!” she spoke in a soothing tone that some how broke into his consciousness.

“Oi!” the violet orbs flickered open and looked into her pale face and hazel eyes. She was smiling serenely at him. He felt the memories of the bad dreams disappear the longer he looked into that innocent face. “Who are you?” his voice was etched with curiosity and fascination.

“I’m Nytalia. I’m just a friend.” she smiled happily and giggled at his puzzled look.

“You have a weird name.” he pointed out blatantly.

“Thank you. It’s of a very old origin.” she began to fall in love with those brilliant eyes. “You were having a bad dream, so I thought I’d wake you up.”

“Thanks.” he looked a little confused. One she hadn’t asked his name, two she didn’t get angry for the comment he made about her name. Ofcourse he didn’t have a name and was kind of relieved she didn’t ask. “Where are you from?” he asked softly.

She thought a moment. No one had ever asked her that before. Then she remembered her life before she became an angel. “Earth.” Her heart pounded in pain. It had been so very long since she tried to remember her human life. It was something she wanted to forget.

“Is it pretty, do you know?” His eyes glowed in excitement.

“Very.”

“Wish I could see it.” He looked to the metal ceiling.

“You will. Believe me.” she smiled. “You will love it there.” She brushed one of the stray hairs on his face away. “You look tired.” She cocked an eyebrow.

“I am. I have had nightmares every night. It keeps me from sleeping well.” He sighed. “It’s really depressing here. How long will you be here before you go home?” he looked at her with a light in his eyes she had never seen before.

“I leave soon.” she studied his face. “But not tonight.”

“Stay with me?” he pleaded with her. He liked the warm feelings she emanated from her body and yearned for more. He smiled hopefully.

She was caught by surprise. “Alright.” With these words they curled up together on the cold ground. In that instant visions of the earth and its sunrises filled the boy’s mind and he felt peace. She smiled as she smoothed his hair with her small hands. She then sang to him in her best possible voice and rocked him to sleep.

His mind drowned in the peaceful feelings of the visions and the velvety sweetness of her beautiful voice. If heaven were anymore beautiful, he wouldn’t believe it.

~ After Colony 194 – Trowa

Trowa walked slowly over the metal hallways, his eyes emptier than that of a dead person. This made Nytalia shiver at the thought. The boy exited into the artificial ecosystem of the colony L3. It was supposedly nighttime there. He walked on emotionless, then stopped to sit beneath a tall tree. He stared silently into the night as if looking for something.

Curious to get a closer look she transfigures into the snowy white owl she had approached him as before long ago. With that she flew down to him and landed on the ground beside him. His eyes flickered over to her soft white body. They grew wide with something that looked like relief. “You...” he reached out and caressed her soft silky feathers. “You wouldn’t believe how long I’ve looked for you...” he sighed softly.

/He was looking for me? / She was shocked, but hopped onto his knee anyway. “Who...” she turned her head in question. He smoothed the feathers on her head lightly.

“I knew you were real because...” he reached in his pocket and pulled out a slender plastic box containing a single silver white feather. “You were the only friend I ever had...” he sighed and looked to the sky. “I began to believe that I’d never see you again....” he put the feather back in his pocket.

“Whoooo....” she cooed again softly to him. His eyes seemed to smile at her.

“I’m glad I got to see you this one last time... I won’t be back here again soon... perhaps even never...” he sighed and closed his eyes. She looked at him sadly then crawled onto his chest to cuddle against him. “Arigato...”

~ After Colony 194 – Quatre

Quatre wandered to the old school ground on L4 where he had first attempted to go to school. There he saw the big tree, which he ran to so many years ago. “That’s where I saw her. The most beautiful creature.” he sighed. Locked of golden blonde fell into his face. “I wish I could see that animal just one more time. I’d love to thank her for giving me the courage to go on that day... which helped me get through each day as I went...”

Nytalia grinned. /You definitely had it the easiest... but you still had it pretty hard. / She silently assumed her wolf shape and sauntered out into the shade of the tree. To her delight, Quatre saw and ran to her throwing his arms about her neck./He’s so tender hearted... he’ll be an excellent choice for our future... /

“Oh great Allah! I prayed I’d see you one more time before I left...” He cried softly into her silken fur. “Thank you so much for what you did so long ago.” He pulled back and smiled softly. His aqua eyes sparkled into her hazel eyes. “You’re special aren’t you?” Quatre winked “Wolves aren’t suppose to be on the colony... but I’m glad you’re here.”

Nytalia shivered in excitement. She had meant something to both him and Trowa. She couldn’t do much, but what little she had done made somewhat of a difference. /Does this mean that I’ve messed up the route of time? / She sighed and brushed the question aside and for Quatre’s last day, she stayed by his side.

~ After Colony 194 – Wufei

Wufei sat outside of a huge warehouse staring out over the flowers in the field. He sighed then opened his book to read. It was peaceful for the moment, but memories and worries were nagging at him in desperation. Meiran was hanging over his shoulder fuming at him again. He tried to tune her out.

“Wufei! Aren’t you listening to me? Dr. O wants to make you a pilot. Don’t you think you should stop reading just for a second?” Meiran fumed then marched off into the warehouse.

“She is so weak.” he rolled his eyes then looked back to see that his book had been upside down. “Kisama.” he turned the book over with a sigh.

Nytalia giggled at his inability to think. /I should pay him one last visit too. / With this she walked up to him in her feline form, carrying once again, a silk like daisy. She dropped it lightly onto the open book. “Mew.” she purred loudly, as he looked wide-eyed at the white flower.

“It’s you!” Wufei smiled and picked the white cat up. “Where have you been all this time?” he fingered the flower and laughed softly. “Still have a thing for daisies?” the cat purred even louder. He stroked the soft fur slowly. “I must admit that I looked for you when you weren’t there when I woke up. You have quite the calming effect on me... Every time I see a daisy I remember the warm feeling you gave me all those years ago.”

“Meow...” she curled up on his stomach and purred loudly.

He laughed a deep rich laugh and smoothed her fur with a bronze hand. “You make me restful...” his voice trailed off. “I need that sort of rest before I leave...” he dozed off and this time she stayed until he woke up.

~ After Colony 194 – Heero

Heero sat in Dr. J’s lab silently. He tapped his callused fingers over the metal furniture. His eyes were dull and empty. They were void of any sort of emotion. He stared out before him pretty blankly. Impatiently he rose and walked out of the lab and onto the grounds of Colony L1. He sauntered slowly down a path in a park that looked oddly familiar. Heero stopped, his cobalt eyes scanned a lone bench. His eyes widened. “Always with you.” he whispered. His dark hair ruffled in the wind. The vision of the beautiful angel danced in the picture of his eyes. “You’re never alone.” he breathed deeply then shut his eyes. /Weak thoughts. /

Nytalia felt the burn of pain as she watched the perfect soldier. / How sad. This civilization made him. But he still wishes to save it. How strong. But how very sad. / She loved to boy for all he was and for all he could be. She wished she could hold him again just once, but thought better of it. Then without realizing it, she found herself standing behind him. She reached out and tapped his lean shoulder. “Excuse me... looking for someone?” Her voice was velvety as usual, and struck him very familiar.

He whirled around to face the pale angel of his dream. /She’s real. / His eyes widened further. “No...” he whispered softly almost inaudible. He reached out in a weak moment and touched the white clad lady. She seemed so bright and seemed to glow even in broad daylight. “You’re...”

She met the outstretched hand and clasped her own about it. “I promised you I would always be here... and that you would never be alone. You are so very strong. I’m proud of you.” she smiled her warmest smile then evaporated from his very vision.

“Never alone...” his lips quirked slightly in an attempt to smile “My angel...”

~ After Colony 194 – Duo

Duo laughed deliberately as he trotted out of the room where Dr. G and his men stood discussing plans. Upon exiting the room completely, he sunk against the wall and sighed heavily. /What am I doing? I’m not strong enough for this. / Duo squeezed his eyes shut. In his mind he saw visions of earth and the sweet melody of a far away voice singing him to sleep. Furiously he opened his eyes. He’d never get the chance to hear her voice again. His mind had fallen in love with the girl with that voice. The one that had brought him the feelings of warmth and peace so many years ago. And now... he stood on the brink of chaos, and this time, he’d be the cause.

Nytalia peeked around the corner at the black clad figure. /Just like his father. Dressed in all black. He’s quite handsome for that matter. / She giggled. She hadn’t thought something like that since.... Since she were a human. She pushed the thought aside. /Noble son of Shinigami... if my voice is what you wish to hear then I will make that wish come true. /

Duo pulled he’s knees to his chest and plopped his head on them. “What a day.” he sighed softly. All he could picture were the death and destruction of all his loved ones. It was so painful. His thoughts were pretty chaotic when all of a sudden a soothing melody pierced through them. The same melody that the girl had sung to him all those years ago. He pulled his head up to see a beautiful woman walking down the hallway. She had the same dark brown-black hair and beautiful hazel eyes. /It can’t be... /

She paused before him and smiled that serene smile that had captured his heart so long ago. “Hello!” she spoke cheerfully to him. “I know you don’t I?”

Duo choked. “Ny... Nytalia?”

She laughed softly “Hai. That’s me. And you my dear sir?”

“I’m Duo, I run and hide but I never tell a lie, Duo Maxwell.” he proclaimed proudly.

She laughed once more then slid down to sit beside him. “You’re the boy from the streets of L2, ne?”

He nodded slowly, amazed by her keen memory. “You sang me to sleep...”

She smiled “ I did, didn’t I?” she leaned toward him and kissed his forehead. It caused warmth to surge through him. His memory was made new and alive once more in his mind. He gasped when she began to sing again as she rose and began to walk away. “We will meet again Duo, not because I see it happening... but because I wish to see you once more.” with this she disappeared around a corner, her song fading slowly from earshot.

Duo smiled brightly. The song and visions danced vividly through his mind, and once more he felt peace. “You’re right Nytalia. I’ll see you again. I promise!”

~ After Colony 195

“Its begun Nytai-chan.” the deep voice pierced the silence that surrounded the two unmoving figures. “I see you’ve come to watch.” Shinigami stepped forward to stand beside the white figure. He ran his fingers through her deep brown locks and smiled at how soft they were. They stood upon the metal gray of colony L1 staring down upon the blue-green marble amid the palpable black. Five reddish orange tails of fire streaked down to the Earth’s surface.

“Will they survive this?” Nytalia shivered at the emptiness that was present in her usual thick warm voice. She didn’t really know what disturbed her more, the uncontrollable cold of space, or the empty feeling in her heart.

“You wouldn’t forgive me if they didn’t would you, Nytai-chan?” he laughed a soft vulnerable laugh. He sighed. /She’s not responding. That isn’t good. But.. I can’t promise her anything... / He looked at her placidly. / I know... / In the corner of her eyes, she saw him pull back the black hood slowly. She turned in complete shock to see a cascade of chestnut colored hair with shimmering silver streaks, fall over his back and shoulders. It reached his knees in one great sweep then billowed about his black clad body. He turned to her with the same grin that adorned Duo Maxwell’s face so often. His eyes were deep and almost completely black, save for the highlight of violet within the irises deepest reaches.

“Shi-chan...” she was breathless and her eyes were wide “You look almost exactly like Duo-kun.” she choked as he laughed richly. “I thought you never wished to be seen. Why do you honor me like this?”

A pale strong hand gripped her shoulder as he smiled a knowing smile. “Well little one, consider it my apology in advance. I’m not saying they will die, but I can’t promise you anything either way. Though, I’ll confess that I’ll do all possible to keep them alive... Even pass them over one time when they are suppose to be taken.” he leaned in and kissed her forehead softly.

“Demo...” he pressed a cold slender finger to her lips and shook his head lightly. There was bitterness in his smile, which silenced the want to voice her confusion. With this she fell forward into his arms and heaved sobs into his chest, as their long hair danced about them in complete silence.

~ Trowa

Within the small pod, the tall thin pilot worked at a computer panel. He paused momentarily to reach into his pocket. When the hand returned it help the little plastic box which the feather stayed in. “Well little one... Here I am. Off to save the colonies. The very colonies that stripped me of my family before I even knew them. The colony that raised me in fear and agony of who would dominate me next...” he shuddered and slid his fingers over the smooth surfaces.

A methodical hum interrupted his thoughts. “Approaching Earth’s atmosphere, begin entry program.” the mechanical voice blared loudly in the small cockpit. He grimaced then slipped the box back into his pocket.

Slowly Trowa swept his bangs from his one eye to look at the colonies once more. “Goodbye friend... only friend... I promise my leaving will be worth it.” he bit his tongue as he pulled his emerald eyes away. /It has to be. /

These thoughts in mind, he walked to the large red Gundam and sighed. /This is it. / With this he climbed into the cockpit then closed it up with a loud thud. The mechanical panels sparked to life all around him. “Just you and me now Heavy Arms.” He sighed and closed his eyes. /Won’t be long now. /

~ Quatre

Quatre stared out into the expanse of black horizon he was leaving behind. His aquamarine eyes closed momentarily. /I just know I’m doing the right thing. / The red fire like substance caused by entering the earth’s atmosphere soon blurred the horizon. /Time to get into Sandrock. /

The frail boy sat into the cockpit then flipped the switch to close the hatch. “This is it Sandrock. No backing out now.” he sighed softly as the bright lights of view screens came to life in response. /Friends... I have friends... but I feel so lonely... The magunacs are waiting for me... but... / he blinked slowly. The pod was breaking apart, he knew that much. He would be landing somewhere in the desert to join up with his small band of forty men.

As the pod landed the Gundam Sandrock came up from the wreckage. A brownish green mobile suit approached him and stood beside him. “Are you ready Quatre-sama?” Rashid’s voice came over the link clearly. The boy’s silence caused the older man to become slightly worried.

“Yes Rashid. What is our enemies location?” Quatre spoke softly his azure eyes distant. The leader of the magunac corp. was now rambling on about the statistics he knew he should be listening to, but instead he stared out over the desert. / Earth... / he smiled softly. /Earth contains all the animals that I have ever read about that don’t exist on the colonies... / his smiled broadened further /Even the animals that aren’t suppose to exist there. / With this thought Quatre pictured the silver-white wolf and sighed nostalgically. “Let’s win this Rashid.”

“We will Quatre-sama... and we will be with you till the end.” Quatre nodded in silence, and in his mind he thanked Allah for good friends, even those not present.

~ Wufei

Shenlong stood amid a military base, its stature was proud and strong. Within the cockpit sat the ebony haired pilot in complete silence. He looked over the base that would in a few moments become a battlefield. His dark eyes slid closed as he spoke up defiantly “This is pilot, Chang Wufei. I’ll destroy you Oz.”

With these words, three Leo suits approached him “Identify yourself!” Wufei smiled malevolently. A smile crept into the corners of his mouth. In a few moments, his quick movements destroyed the three pilots attacking him with no problems.

“You people are weak... You’re not worthy to fight Nataku and I.” He growled and catapulted himself into the battle. “You shouldn’t underestimate your opponent!” he yelled in sheer anger as he caused heavy destruction upon a few more Leo’s and the base headquarters.

The battle was over before it had even started leaving Wufei to walk away in his Gundam feeling utterly empty. There was a need inside of him that needed to be filled. An anger that needed to be quenched, and the way he planned to solve these problems was through destroying his enemy. “Weak... all of you...” and in his mind he felt himself quiver. /Even me... / His body trembled dramatically, his eyes closed tightly, when a picture came to mind. It was of a silken white daisy sitting upon an old book. Slowly the anger subsided. “There’s always tomorrow.”

~ Heero

Heero frowned hard as the Leo shoved his Gundam into the sea. /How am I going to get out of this one... / He knew he had to think fast or he wouldn’t be able to get out and reach the surface before drowning. /I’ll have to leave Wing behind... Nani kuso! / He cursed himself. /How could I let an Oz Leo take my Gundam down? Mission... failed... / His cobalt eyes slid shut as he processed how he was going to handle the current situation.

He slid a hand over his helmet placidly checking to make sure it was sealed tightly for his swim to the surface. /This is the only way... / His gloved hand reached out and pushed the eject button which sent him out into the watery depths. At first his body seemed to be shocked at the cold water and the sudden submergence, but soon he pulled his thoughts together. He turned to watch Wing disappear into the blackish-blue of the ocean. /Kuso... /

He felt empty as he swam toward the surface; the cold was almost unbearable. /I’m all alone... / he felt himself slipping from consciousness. /I judged the swim distance wrong... What else could go wrong? / His body grew limp and he could no longer move. He felt despair as his deep blue eyes fell closed. /All alone... no... Always with you... never alone... / the smile crept into the corners of his lips causing them to quirk slightly. It faded only when the black of unconsciousness overtook his lifeless body.

~ Duo

DeathScythe landed on the barge floating upon the empty sea. The hatch fell open and the black clad pilot jumped out. “Hey Howard!” Duo yelled out buoyantly as he ran toward the hanger of the ship. He waltzed in and smiled his broad smile at the crew. “Never fear! Shinigami is here!”

The crew smiled and suppressed their laughter. “Hello Duo.” The braided pilot grew slightly grim at their lack of enthusiasm. From amongst them a man stepped out and clapped a hand on Duo’s thin, but lean shoulder. “Hey Duo what’s up!” the man in sunglasses laughed loudly. “Glad to see you made it!”

Duo forced his usual grin, “How could you doubt me Howard?” the other man shrugged. “Oh well.” he laughed it off. “Mind if I bring Scythe in for repairs and checks now?” Howard nodded so he took his leave to venture back to the tall black mobile suit.

Duo lay out on the deck of the sweeper’s ship and stared up into the moon and stars. Thoughts played about in his mind when memories started to get the best of him.

“Wish I could see it.”

“You will. Believe me.” she smiled. “You will love it there.”

The junior Shinigami smiled. /You didn’t lie did you Nytalia. I do love it here... / With that in mind he began to hum to himself the melody which she had sung to him all those years ago. /Arigato, Nytalia-chan... /

~ A few months later

Nytalia stood looking over a torn battlefield. Her eyes brimmed with tears. She felt the screams of agony as she crossed each bloody grave, the only grave these young soldiers would know. Her eyes wavered as she looked to the sky. /Shi-chan must be very busy these days... / She dropped her gaze and allowed the lids to slide close. When she opened them again she was floating in the midst of a large battleground in space. The dark silent horizon lit up with each explosion. She sighed sadly. The sounds of people dying and machines exploding caused her head to pound. And in the midst of this chaos she felt the presence of a few of the youths she tried so hard to protect. /I pray those boys don’t die. / She stretched her senses to see just who she felt out in space. There she found Heero, Duo, Wufei and in the distance she felt Quatre. /Where’s Trowa? /

A presence appeared behind her. She knew it was Shinigami, so she didn’t bother to turn around. “Something the matter, Nytai-chan?” he saw her shiver. Her pale form stood out plainly against the blackness.

“Is Trowa?” she stopped and couldn’t finish.

“He’s not dead, but I will tell you this much, they are going to kill me for not doing my job.” he laughed dryly. “He ended up with amnesia. That’s it.” he saw her tense frame relax.

“Oh thankyou!” She spun around and threw her arms about his neck. He hugged her back lightly.

“Only doing as I promised. He’d better not almost die again.” he attempted to joke, but she wasn’t listening. She wanted to go check on all of them. This time she wanted them to know who she was.

He smiled to himself. He knew what she wished for. “Take liberty little one. At this point in time, the plan has almost been totally fulfilled. Go see your pilots. Do as you like. But don’t distract them from what they need to do. And don’t get me in trouble.” they both laughed and she hugged him tighter.

“Domo arigato Shi-chan!” her eyes glittered intensely as she pulled away. “I won’t be long.”

“Yes, please don’t be. I believe the dying need your comfort immensely this time.” he sighed.

“I know. I will return.”

“I believe you. Now go Nytai-chan. You don’t have much time.” he pushed her softly.

She nodded then backed away. With one last smile she faded into the black of space. He smiled then grabbed his scythe from the blackness. It was time to go to work again.

~ Trowa

Trowa stood stone still against a circular brightly painted board. His hands were out stretched horizontally on either side of him and tied at the wrists. One half of his stoic face was covered in a clown’s mask, the other side was left open to see one of his brilliant green eyes. He didn’t flinch as the knives struck the board so near to his slender form. The crowd clapped and cheered loudly at his trust and ability to stand so fearlessly.

As the performance ended Trowa bowed gracefully to the audience. As he rose, something caught his single green eye. Deep within the crowd he noticed an extremely pale woman with deep brown-black hair. She was wearing a white oxford and tight, white jeans. She did not clap, nor smile, she just stared upon him intently without even blinking. Usually he didn’t notice the stares, but when he did it made him uncomfortable, but this time it was different. The stare made him unbelievably relaxed, and even a bit warm. He stood there, lips slightly parted, until he felt Katherine tug at his arm. “Trowa, what’s wrong? We need to go off stage now.” He blinked for the first time then nodded in acknowledgment.

He sauntered out of the dressing room in the clothes that were normally seen on him. He wore a black turtle neck and light blue jeans. They both seemed to cling to his body tightly. He sighed lightly as he made his way over to the lion cage. /Who was she? Do I know her? I don’t even remember who I am... / His hands trembled as he stroked the great mane of the animal. A hand fell upon his shoulder causing him to jump slightly. He spun around only to meet brilliant green eyes with brown highlights. He inhaled sharply at the sight. /Those eyes... They... / he stopped as the memory of a small white bird looked up at him in sad concern, came ripping into his consciousness.

“Trowa?” her face was paler than usual, making her skin look the color of the silken feathers he touched not too long ago. “Are you ok?”

“How... did...” he broke off as he tried to explain to himself why she reminded him so much of his feathered friend from so long ago.

She smiled a bittersweet smile. He was lost within the bounds of his mind. He was hurting so deeply. “I just know these things. It’s my job.” she winked at him then looked over his thin shoulder. She moved past him then reached a white slender hand toward the creature. “Hello there...” she purred to him and to the boy’s amazement the animal purred back in response.

“Who... who are you?” he blinked trying to get rid of the raging emotions he felt deep inside.

“My name is Nytalia. That’s all you need to know.” she turned back to him. “Honestly, I just wanted to check on you and reassure you in a way...” she broke off then looked up into his face.

He bit his lip as he saw pain flicker in her eyes. “What’s wrong?”

“I... I have just been here too long. It’s nothing to worry about.” she smiled and cursed herself for allowing her emotions to be read so easily. She reached out and brushed a finger over his cheek lightly. “I’d better get going.”

“You’re leaving?” he looked broken as she looked into his heart.

“Do you still have that feather?” she smiled broadly.

/How does she know? I only told... she’s... no... / The thoughts raged on in his head causing him to drift away from the present. She gripped his shoulder, bringing him back slowly.

“Yes Trowa... you thoughts on me are correct.” Her eyes widened slightly causing him to gasp. There he saw the same beautiful melancholy eyes he had seem that one last time he saw the white owl. She smiled then turned away. “I’ll be with you. Don’t worry. I won’t let you suffer more than you can handle. Even if...” she stopped and considered this “Even if it means the end of me.” with these words she began to walk away and before his very eyes, she disappeared into the dark of night.

~ Quatre

Quatre sat in the depths of Peacemillian quietly in thought. His golden hair fell in his face in heavy locks. The once bright azure eyes stared at the gray metal walls. /I’ve made so many mistakes... I almost killed Trowa... and Heero... What if... / his eyes clouded over so he closed them. /What if I had actually killed them? / The room about him seemed to be that of a lounge room, where people would come to rest outside of their duties. He was alone.

His small body shivered as he pulled his knees to his chest to rest his head upon them. Space was cold just as he had remembered it. Space was where his twenty-nine sisters lived, and where his father died. He was the sole heir of the Winner Corp. With such a burden, he still was the Gundam pilot 04. His thin fingers intertwined into his sunlight gold hair and he gripped them into fists tightly. Frustration overwhelmed him. /I can’t take this. / As he continued to sit this way, his thoughts were distracted by the swift swoosh of the metallic door. He turned to see Noin standing there looking at him quietly.

He smiled at her half-heartedly. “Quatre... you should find something to get your mind off of things. Moping over it will solve nothing.” The blonde nodded to her quietly then stood. “What are you going to do then?”

He looked at her blankly “I’m going to work on Sandrock.” her tense look eased and she nodded. He then left the room walking aimlessly through the corridors. The padding of his feet on the metal floor was the only noise he heard. Soon he came to the hangar door that led to his Gundam Sandrock. With swift movements over the key panel, the door slid open silently. He stepped through the door and looked at the tall black, white and yellow mobile suit. He smiled wanly. “Hello there my friend.” he whispered softly as he approached. In a moment of scanning over the great machine his eyes fell upon a figure dressed completely in white, inspecting some of the parts on the immense right arm. Panic filled him momentarily until the person turned to face the Arabian.

“Hello there Quatre-sama!” the female voice chimed down to him happily. She hopped on to one of the many catwalks, then made her way gracefully and without effort over to him. The tender heart within him felt like it was about to stop as the girl came closer. Her hair was a dark brown like Heero’s and her skin was almost white. But that wasn’t what caused his heart to skip. It was the color of her sparkling hazel eyes. “Something wrong?” she asked softly as she stopped in front of him.

“Ah.. no.. forgive me...” he looked at her as if in a trance. Warmth washed over his body as he looked into those bright eyes. She was almost pure love and hope. “Do I know you? You seem very familiar.”

She laughed lightly “Yes you do, but you don’t know my name.” she smiled her soft smile. “My name is Nytalia. It’s all you need to know.” it almost seemed that her soul shined through the outer shell of her body.

“Nytalia... why... you seem so... there’s more to you than meets the eyes... isn’t there?” she winced slightly.

“I should have known you would figure it out. After all... you are an empath.” she sighed softly, she now had to explain to those expectant aqua eyes. “Alright Quatre. You could say that I am not even human, but I am truly half. That I don’t want to explain. I am the one called Tenshi no genki.” she closed her eyes a moment then raised them to his. His eyes were wide and brimmed with tears. In a few moments she found herself cooing to the young teen ruffling his hair lightly after he threw himself in her arms. “It’s ok Quatre.”

“You’re the wolf aren’t you?”

“Yes.”

“So you didn’t forget me... you were always there...” he cried freely.

“Yes, I was always there. Please Quatre. I can’t talk any longer, I have to go.” she smiled then kissed his pale forehead with her crimson lips. “Ja ne.” With these words she pushed him away slightly then disappeared into the cold air, leaving him there to shiver.

“Ja ne, my angel of life.” he closed his eyes and smiled.

~ Wufei

The Chinese boy, dressed completely in white, sat at the immense feet of Altron. His eyes were closed and a look of anger was upon his young face. His thoughts were raging within his mind. Anger, hate, determination, and even sadness took up every bit of thought. /All this death... and for what? Where is the justice? No... / His forehead creased. / It’s all injustice. / The simulated breeze blew through his black hair, making him aware of the artificial atmosphere about him. He opened his eyes to gaze at the surroundings. The landscape was vast and empty, and not to mention, he was all alone. Under the circumstances, he reasoned that he should be happy with the surroundings, but instead, deep down he wished for company. He felt dreadfully alone and even depressed. His lithe body jumped as if an unheard prayer had been answered. He turned sharply to see whose hand had just touched his shoulder.

“Ohayo.” the soft female voice invaded his senses and made him realize that it was indeed morning. He scanned over the glowing pale countenance to find full crimson lips, and almost black hair. Her eyes were a delicate hazel that reminded him of a certain kitten from so long ago. It felt like ancient history to the young teen.

“Ohayo...” his voice was almost inaudible as he turned his head away from the slender white clad form. He cast his black eyes over his beloved Gundam. /Nataku... why am I being so cool about this? Shouldn’t I be upset that someone found me? / He stopped short as the light body settled upon the ground beside him without a single noise. / Anyone who sees a Gundam should die... right? / Just then his keen eyes caught sight of an object in her delicate white hand. He breathed in slowly. / A daisy... / The silken flower twirled in her fingers as she smiled brilliantly upon him.

“I’m Nytalia...” she laughed softly then placed the delicate flower in his bronze hand. “Remember me?” He nodded in almost disbelief. His eyes fell upon the flower he held.

“You’re... you’re the cat.” he choked on his words, wondering why this seemed so logical yet so absurd.

“You got it.” she winked then looked up at the Gundam. “You still call her Nataku?”

He gaped at her. /How did she know that? / He paused. /Then again... she is a cat... / He shook his head trying to make some sense of everything. “Yes... I do...”

She laughed as she felt the indecision within him. “She’s proud of you, you know.” Her hazel eyes studied his face briefly then looked out into the surroundings.

“She does?” his shields fell as he looked at her as I begging child would at his mother.

“Yes. Meiran is very proud.” she turned back to him and caressed his smooth cheek. “You shouldn’t struggle within yourself so much. You’re going to hurt yourself. I worry.”

“Are you an..?”

“An angle? Why yes... Tenshi no genki to be exact.” she shrugged. “Mind you that you and your friends have been a handful for me. But I’m pretty good at keeping up.” she smiled triumphantly. “With a lot of impatience from the others that is. They aren’t too happy with me. Especially Shi-chan.”

“The other pilots? Others, as in Angels? Shi-chan... do you mean Maxwell?” There was far too much information for the Chinese youth to sort through and understand.

She smirked. “Yes, yes, and no not exactly. But that’s all I can tell you.”

His eyes looked upon her wide with interest and something else, something quite child like. /She’s so different. Her aura is so warm and loving. So welcoming. / He smiled softly as she looked over his face.

“Chang Wufei, you are very intelligent and strong. Don’t let your hurt and anger get the best of you. You have a long road ahead of you. Remember what you promised me all those years ago?” her eyes gleamed with a inquisitive look.

“To accept my fate?” she nodded in affirmation. “But I am weak...” he winced at his words.

“No... far from it.” she leaned forward and kissed his forehead, sending warmth through him. “Be strong. You will be fine. I’ve got an eye on you guys.” she winked then disappeared leaving him to gaze dreamily at the small satin daisy within his grasp.

~ Heero

Heero leaned against the metal walls of the space ship. The cold ran through his body causing his lips to quiver slightly. / So cold. / Beside him lay the limp sleeping form of a sandy haired girl. She slept soundly in his presence. It seemed odd to the perfect soldier. / I’m not the type of person she should be around. / His face contorted in some sort of foreign pain he wasn’t used to. / I have to get away from her. Just for a little while. / He stood quietly after brushing loose hair from her content face. Moving without a sound he ventured away from her. Staying close enough to keep an eye and ear on her, he slipped to the ground and exhaled in relief. His cobalt eyes closed sadly. He felt completely isolated and alone. Like no one could reach the last human emotions in his hardened heart.

“Hee-chan?” the whisper was so soft that Heero barely heard it. The eyes flickered open slowly expecting to see nothing, but instead he found himself staring straight into the hazel eyes of the pale woman that invaded his thoughts more often than he wished to admit. He gasped as he began to realize just who she was. He muttered something that she didn’t quite hear. “Are you ok?” she whispered again in her thick velvety voice.

“My... my... my angel...” he stuttered as he stared into the pale face that seemed whiter than the lights of the stars of space. He felt his body wish only to reach out and touch her. As if she were the only love that had ever touched his heart. His thoughts came in torrents and he could not respond to her simple question.

The green-brown eyes looked over her in worry. She could feel no injuries, but the pain in his heart was evident. She felt like a mother hovering over her lost child trying to assess the damage done to him. She smiled down upon him, then reached out to run her slender fingers through his unruly locks. “Yes Hee-chan... your angel. Would you like to know your angel’s name?”

He nodded automatically lost in her protective gaze. He felt so close to her, but he was afraid to reach out to her for fear she would slip through his blood stained fingers. “My angel’s name...”

“Nytalia... Tenshi no genki...”

His eyes widened then brimmed in reluctant moisture. “You never forgot me. You were always there!” his voice was heavy and exhausted. She heard the desperation of a little child calling out to her from the midst of a grown up world that had forgotten him. “I was never alone...”

She nodded feeling the tears build in her own eyes. “Can I have a hug soldier?” her crimson lips curled into her radiant smile as she stretched her arms out to accept him. He stared at her in disbelief then fell into the embrace. He felt her warm tears fall onto his head as he breathed in her scent. It reminded him of a flower field in full bloom. His mind hazed as a tear fell over his cheek. “I’ll be with you Hee-chan.” she whispered to the boy persistently. “Remember how love feels. You can have that feeling. Don’t be afraid. Follow your destiny and I will take care of you as best I can.” she rocked him silently.

“Arigato... my angel...” his voice seemed to be a small whimper, but still remained very strong. Her heart beat hard as she kissed the crown of the deep brown head. “my angel.”

“Your angel.” she cooed back to him as he drifted off to sleep. Her eyes raised to the form of the Peacecraft heir as she rose to a sitting position. The sandy blonde head turned to see them. Her mouth fell open but no sound came out. Nytalia laughed to her self then beckoned Relena to her. The girl obeyed silently and without hesitation. As she approached Nytalia spoke in a whisper. “Stay with Hee-chan, I can not stay any longer. He needs someone to remind him that the heart is capable of feeling love. Even his. I don’t know if you are destined to love him or not, but please for this solitaire moment...” she trailed off as her eyes began to spill over. Relena nodded then kneeled beside her.

Nytalia shifted the sleeping boy over to Relena’s arms then smiled causing her whole form to glow. “I promise I’ll take care of Heero.” Relena smiled back feeling the warmth that Nytalia was giving forth.

“Arigato. Farewell Relena... farewell Hee-chan.” she took a step back as the tears fell freely. With a nod her form disappeared into the cold air around them leaving Relena to stare in shock and understanding.

~ Duo

The boy clad in clerical garments stared emptily at the cockpit hatch of DeathScythe Hell. The impressive black Gundam stood in the bay of the Peacemillian hatch open and hands out stretched and cupped together. The amaryllis eyes slid closed. He sat in the center of the two immense hands indian style. His hands rested upon his knees as he bowed his head forward. / I should get going soon. Even though the guys won’t be going for a while. / He lifted his head slowly. There was a twinge of sadness in his usual sparkling eyes. He scanned over the hulk of metal starting from the feet moving upward slowly. He’d just finished repairs and was going over the machine one more time. He was tired from fighting and killing. He was tired of the ones he loved dying because of him. He truly was death. He truly believed he was Shinigami. His gaze stopped as his eyes fell upon the white form sitting on the shoulder of Scythe. The white kimono with the silver trim glowed brightly. So did the pale skin that seemed to be the color of the pale sunlight to him. His mouth gaped open. “Nytalia?”

The hazel eyes gazed down upon the son of Shinigami. She sorted out the thoughts in her head slowly. She traced his form with her eyes. He was slender, but agile and strong, and his hair rivaled the length of his father’s but without the silver highlights. She felt a warmth rise into her soft pale cheeks. Unaware she brought her hand up to cover her cheeks in embarrassment. / Nani? What am I doing? / She swallowed hard as he raised to his feet in complete shock. She rose as well then made her way down to him with the grace of an acrobat that would rival even Trowa’s talent.

“Nytalia...” his voice was almost a whimper as she walked down the right arm to where he stood motionless, eyes never once leaving her. He moved nervously as he felt a warmth wash over him. He loved the feeling she brought him. “How... how are you here?”

Her smile dazzled him as she stopped before him. “I am always where you are. Maybe not physically, but...” she stopped. “I’m not always one to stay in physical form.” she watched his mouth fall open wider. “Duo... there is more to me than meets the eyes.” she brushed his chestnut bangs from his face. “I’m Tenshi no genki. The angel of life. I’ve been keeping an eye on you ever since you’ve been born.” she lowered her head and looked at the immense palms on which they stood.

“You’re an... an angel?” he gasped then a look fell across his face. It was a look of disappointment. This threw Nytalia completely off guard. “I see...” he breathed heavily.

“Wh.. what’s wrong?” she spoke so fast it surprised even her. She was reacting way too strangely to this.

“Nothing... it’s just... all these years... and you are an angel... you’re not suppose to be in love with an angel...” he whimpered under his breath where she could barely make out any of his words. Her face went completely red as feelings she had forgotten so long ago came rushing back into her fragile half human, half-angel mind.

“But... I’m half human!” she exclaimed then slapped a hand over her mouth.

He looked up at her suddenly a light of hope lit anew within the deep violet eyes. “Really? Nytalia... do you know how many nights I stayed awake thinking about you? Wanting to see you... but never could...” he spoke quickly as if trying to get his life story out in a few minutes time.

“Duo-kun...” she began to breathe fast. /NO.. I can’t.... NO! / He took her hand in his. “Duo-kun... I...” she felt her body react to his touch in a way that wasn’t suppose to happen. /No... for his sake and my own... NO. / She tried to convince herself to pull away, but her body wouldn’t respond. “I missed you too.” she blinked up into his bright eyes. /Nani? But you can see him at all times. How could you miss him?! / She cursed herself under her breath as he brushed a hand over her cheek.

“You’ll still have to leave me again... won’t you?” she nodded speechless. He smiled a genuine smile then lean down and kissed her softly. She froze completely in total horror, and yet she felt excitement all at once. When he pulled away her mind raced then whined for more. She silenced the thoughts as best that she could. “Nytalia... you’d better go... I have to go fight again.” he smiled softly then let go of her hand.

She couldn’t move. / What just happened. That wasn’t supposed to happen. / She fell into his arms against all rational thoughts and buried her head in his chest. For the first time in such a long time, she was the one that was lost searching for love and hope. He smoothed his hands deftly through her long dark hair, breathing in the scent of the angel named Nytalia. “Duo-kun...”

“Nytalia...” he whispered back to her as they stood alone in the hangar. “Tell me... how are you half human?” he asked calmly and in a kind tone.

“My mother was an angel. The angel of life. She fell in love with my father whom was human. That was before humans even believed space travel was possible, besides orbiting the moon.” she spoke freely of things she had long forgotten and he listened to her intently while still embracing her shivering form. “Angels can’t stay in human form very long, so when she became pregnant, she had to remain a human for nine months. She survived the nine months, but died when I was born. Father became very ill and died when I was only eight years old.” she whimpered softly. “It was so awful. I died at the age of sixteen. When I died, instead of going like normal people, Shinigami-sama came to me and told me who I was and that I was to replace my mother.” her eyes started to cloud over and her body was wracked with sobs as the memories flooded over her.

Duo looked down upon her lovingly with a look that clearly said “believe me, I understand.” He soothed her and talked to her in even tones trying to calm her. He felt so alive when he was with her. He could feel her pain and yet he could feel a love stronger than he knew existed. He closed his eyes as she began to collapse into his arms drowsily and fall into a quiet sleep. He now understood why she seemed so afraid at first. She was afraid for him and herself. She didn’t want him to suffer what her parents had so long ago. But even though he knew he didn’t care. He lowered himself to the surface of the mobile suit’s palms and rested her in his lap with a sigh of happiness. The thought he had had so long ago flooded back into his mind. /If heaven is better than this... I’d never believe it. /

~ After Colony 196 - Prologue

Shinigami sat rigidly on the cliff’s edge. His gaze was cast over the mountain range on which he sat upon. / So... They all lived. / He slipped the black hood off his head slowly. His deep violet eyes slid closed as the silver and chestnut locks whipped in the wind around him. /What are you thinking Nytalia? And why did it have to be my son? / His expression changed to one of utter disgust. / I hope you two are happy. You’ll be miserable. Just as I was and your mother Hikaru. / The thoughts in his jumbled mind reverted back. Nytalia’s brown hair and green-eyed mother had died an extremely painful death. Angels aren’t suppose to live like humans, and when they tried, they died. /I don’t want her to die. So many years I’ve made sure she grew up the right way. Hundreds upon hundreds of years. /

* Flash Back *

A little girl with deep brown hair sat crying into the bed of a man lying completely still. The man was flushed of almost all color and sweat beaded his brow. He had damp black hair that was tousled and unkempt. The strained light brown eyes turned slowly to the little child of about eight years of age. “Nytai-chan...” the breathless voice caused the head to rise instantly. The tear stricken cheeks glistened lightly. “I’m... I’m sorry...” he coughed heavily causing a drop of crimson to slip past the pale lips. “I can’t be with you much longer...”

“Daddy...!” the small voice called out to him. She felt him slipping away from her. She threw her arms about his white-hot neck and he smiled weakly. “Please! I don’t want to be alone. Don’t leave me alone!” she whimpered into his steaming crevice in his neck.

He pulled his once strong arms about her minute body and kissed the top of her head lightly after much struggle. “My little angel... I am so sorry... I wish I could... I’ll always be in your heart... I love you so much...” his voice grew quieter and soon died away. Her hazel eyes slid closed as she felt his chest go motionless.

Her body began to shiver as his limp arms fell away from her. “Daddy...” she didn’t move and still clenched him tightly “Daddy... daddy!!” the small voice called out hoping for an answer that would never come.

In the dim lighting the scythe glittered lightly. The figure robed in black looked upon the child sadly. /Poor child. Just a little longer Nytalia. I will be back for you... / With this he disappeared leaving the crying child grasping tightly the body of her father in the room all alone.

He stood slowly blinking away the memories. Not even eight years later, Nytalia fell ill from lack of nutrition, so he had to return for her. Though, she didn’t actually die. He just pushed her into her higher state. This brought her angel side out healing her body and causing it to become ageless. He couldn’t say immortal. No, angels could die when they were in their human form. In their angel form they can only pass their abilities on to their offspring. This is what he had to do. As soon as Duo reached the dying point, Shinigami would pass the job on to his son. He winced. /My debt will be paid. His suffering will end, but the memories will remain. What kind of a release is that? Must the child endure the sins of the father? / He sighed then pulled the hood back over his head, pushing the locks of silken hair back under it’s shadowy depths. / I don’t want to think about it anymore... I want to see just how long this peace will last. / The breeze picked up and took the angel of death with it.

~ After Colony 196 – The Preventers

In the noisy office, Heero sat before his laptop typing with a methodical series of clicks. His gaze was that of deep concentration, attempting to drown out the sounds of the room. Over his right shoulder he could hear Quatre talking on the phone in a very respectful tone. To his left he could see Wufei sitting at his desk looking over a lot of paperwork. The Chinese was eyeing his sword longingly. Heero sighed to himself then looked over the top of his laptop at Trowa who was leaning against the window frame staring dreamily out into the sunlight. With a shake of his head Heero returned to his mission reports.

“Heero, no missions or disturbances reported yet?” Trowa’s stoic voice trailed over to him.

“No, not yet.” he didn’t even look away from the screen.

“Aa...” Trowa turned his gaze back out the window.

“This is so dull.” Wufei sighed shoving the paperwork aside to get a hold onto his sword that he had been staring at tirelessly. “They have nerve locking us up in this office all day.”

Quatre cleared his throat as he hung the phone up. “Guys... Queen Relena just called. She wants us to attend the ball being held in Austria. It’s another peace accords.”

Trowa rolled his eyes slightly and Wufei growled while keeping his attention on his sword. Heero turned to him and nodded. “What time?” Heero asked quietly with a small hope in his eyes. He hadn’t been able to see Relena in a long time and he somewhat missed the Peacecraft.

“Twenty one hundred hours.” Quatre said matter of factly. “It’s a black tie affair.” He smiled his warm smile at the boys then looked at his watch. “It’s twelve hundred right now... We should go ahead and lock up the office and get ready.”

“Don’t we need to book a flight or something?” Wufei asked looking up at the Arabian.

“No, Relena already did it for us. The tickets are at the airport. We only need to show our identifications.”

“Convenient.” Trowa stood up straight then looked at the blonde as well. “Are we allowed to bring anyone?” His face was emotionless. “I promised Kathy I’d spend the day with her. Sis won’t be happy.”

“I don’t see why not Trowa, but you’d better hurry.” Quatre looked over at Wufei. “She also asked me to tell you that Sally would like you to accompany her and to give her a call.” Wufei went a deep shade of crimson. Then Quatre turned to Heero. “Will you be accompanying Relena?”

Heero jumped slightly as he closed the laptop with a snap. “Does she want me to?”

“She mentioned it.” he smiled “You should call and ask her.”

“Hn.” he nodded. “Where’s Duo?”

“Out to lunch.” Trowa replied.

“He left almost two hours ago!” Wufei growled angrily. “Call him on his cell phone.”

“I will.” Quatre said softly, knowing the others would chew the braided pilot out otherwise. The other three nodded then started to put things away so they could close the office.

Duo sat in his small living room of his apartment snoring very loudly. One arm was flung over the back of the chair, a leg over the arm of the chair, with the rest of his body hanging precariously off of the chair. A loud ring coming from his pocket brought him to life causing him to fall out of the chair completely. “Itai!!” He rubbed his head, which had hit the floor then fished out the little phone. “Yeah?” he breathed impatiently.

“Duo?” Quatre’s small voice called out to him softly.

“Yeah, what’s up Q-man? Am I late again?”

“By an hour this time. Did you fall asleep or something?”

Duo laughed nervously. “Maybe, anyways... what’s up?” Duo listened half heartedly as Quatre went over the details for the evening. “You mean I don’t have to come back to work?” he chimed happily.

“Duo...” his voice was irritated. “No, you don’t but you have to go to the ball tonight!”

“Oh...” he went silent and listened to Quatre tell him they’d meet him at the airport at seventeen hundred hours. “Right... I’ll see you guys there.” he thought for a moment then brightened as Quatre stressed that this was very important. “Can I bring someone?”

“I don’t see why not... Duo... do you have a girlfriend?”

“Well.... Sort of.”

“Alright... do whatever. Just be there. Ja ne Duo-kun.”

“Ja.” Quatre hung up and Duo jumped to his feet. He crossed his fingers then looked at the ceiling. “Nytai-chan!” he called hopefully.

In an instant Nytalia’s pale form appeared behind the boy clad in black. She giggled softly then tapped his shoulder. “Yes, Duo-kun? You called?” He spun around in surprise. He smiled broadly in relief.

“Hey! Wanna be my date to the ball tonight?” he asked in a pleading voice. Ever since the war had ended he saw less and less of the beautiful half angel. He missed her and loved her very much. “Please!” his violet orbs looked at her pleadingly.

“I don’t know Duo-kun...” her forehead creased in thought. “Would that be such a good idea? You know I have to come and go a lot according to how many things I need to get done and I have a lot of sparatic work.”

“I know... could you try though? Please? I want the guys to meet you!”

She giggled again then caressed his cheek softly. “They already have. A while back.” she leaned forward and kissed him gently. “Alright. I’ll try.” she turned away slowly calling over her shoulder. “I’ll meet you at the airport. I need to get a few things done.” with this she disappeared from his sight.

“YAH!” He called out happily then ran to his room to try on some of his formal outfits.

~ After Colony 196 – The Awakening

Duo stood amongst his fellow ex-pilots staring at his watch impatiently. /She’s late... / He sighed sadly. Trowa stood a few feet to his left in a black tux with Katherine standing near him in a dark pink formal gown. To his right stood Heero in a black tux looking around for a place to plug his laptop in. Duo sighed and looked to Wufei who was wearing a formal Chinese outfit that Duo didn’t recognize. It was white and had a blue dragon upon the left side of the chest. Quatre who stood at the counter was wearing a white tux complete with the scarf draped over his shoulders. He turned to look at the distraught braided pilot. Duo was wearing a black tux as well, minus the bow tie which he refused to wear.

“Duo... I thought you were bringing someone.” Quatre asked him as he handed a ticket to him.

“I was... She should have been here by now.” with these words a hand settled upon his shoulder. He looked up and saw the astonished look in the azure eyes as they gazed over his shoulder. Duo spun around to stare straight into the green-brown eyes of Nytalia. She wore a dress kimono much like the one she usually wore, but much more impressive looking. Duo’s mouth dropped open. “You look beautiful!”

“Arigato. Sorry I’m late.” she smiled softly then nodded to Quatre. “Hello Quatre.”

“Ny... Nytalia?” Quatre handed her a ticket without even thinking. She took it graciously. About them the other three boys came up to her, eyes wide in shock and excitement.

“Trowa... Wufei... Hee-chan...” she smiled sweetly and nodded to them. Duo jumped towards her and hugged her, which sprung a chain reaction. With a gasp she realized that all five boys, including Heero were hugging her tightly. “Hello boys... I missed you guys too.” They all jumped back and were turning slightly red. “It’s ok guys...” she smiled brightly. “Ready to go to the ball?” She took Duo’s arm in her’s.

Four pairs of eyes lowered onto Duo in disgust. All seemed to ask him just how he got the angel of life to be his date to the ball. To this gaze Duo laughed nervously and tugged at his collar. “My date guys...”

Trowa and Katherine were the first to emerge from the plane, then came Wufei who searched the area for Sally, then Heero sauntered after with Quatre walking beside him. After them came Duo and Nytalia. Duo was chattering excitedly to the girl who smiled and listened to him in interest. The others occasionally turned to wonder why Duo was so lucky to be able to stay in her presence, and they were surprised at how she stayed so calm even through his senseless chatter. Sally met up with them, as did Relena. They began to walk from the building slowly to get to the stretch limo that awaited them. As they approached gunshots rang out showering down upon the group of youths relentlessly. Heero attempted to cover Relena, Wufei tried to cover Sally, and Trowa did the same for Katherine, but to their amazement, not a single one hit the ground around them. Eight pairs of eyes rose to see the glowing figure in the midst of them all.

Nytalia stood poised arms outstretched toward the direction the bullets came from. Her eyes glowed an eerie shade of green and her hair fanned out about her. Encasing the small group was a dome of yellow-white light. They could no longer see the surprised faces about them or here the sounds of gunfire any longer. Nytalia’s gaze fell to the ground as if in pain then her countenance filled with determination. /I can’t let this shield down or they will all die... / Her heart raged as the pilots and the girls looked upon her in awe. To her right the dome of light parted long enough for a figure robed in black to enter, then closed behind him. He stood beside the struggling girl then raised his arms as well. The wind picked up around them as the light slowly faded to a palpable shade of black. The warm feeling ceased and the cold took over. Nytalia held out her hand and a glaive appeared with in her grasp. She stepped outside of the dome and they could no longer see her.

Shinigami stood tall and cursed under his breath. He shouldn’t be doing this. /For my son... for Nytai-chan... / the wind soon blew the hood away and the chestnut and silver hair swirled all around him. His once dark violet eyes now were solid black. Duo looked upon him in awe. He rose to his feet slowly then approached the robed figure. Shinigami glanced at him and his hardened gaze softened. “Do not fear my son.” he whispered. “It’s not your time just yet.” He looked away from the bewildered ex-pilot then once more concentrated on prohibiting bullets from approaching the young group of teens.

Nytalia stood before the black dome, staring upon the people running in horror. The gunfire was slowly dying, but the anger in her heart raged on. Her body began to glow the yellow-white light as she raised the silver glaive in her hand. She noticed behind her that the dome was flickering and knew that Shi-chan couldn’t keep it up much longer. With this she jumped into the air and soared to the rooftop. She landed gracefully behind the group of twenty men all lined up pointing their guns down at the dome. They looked frightened but remained persistent. “Don’t give up men. I don’t know what just happened, but this is our only chance to get rid of those pesky little...” the voice died off and caused the other men to turn to their fallen leader.

“Leave this place or you will die.” she felt the dome die away and knew she had to end this here. The men looked upon her glowing pale figure and began to quiver in her sight.

“Let’s get out of here!” one man yelled dropping his gun causing about eight others to do the same. Nytalia’s glowing green gaze fell upon the remaining men and glared at them. Some were frozen in shock while others rose their guns to point at her. She grinned and waved her free hand toward them. A shock wave followed the motion and threw the guns from their grasps. In fear the remaining men ran quickly away from the furious woman.

As the men disappeared into the night Nytalia winced then fell to her knees. Her eyes now seemed dull and empty. Her body quivered as she heard the clatter of the glaive on the roof. /I... I killed someone... / she breathed heavily in great pain. Her gaze rose once more to see Duo and the others races out onto the rooftop. Duo’s eyes were blank like hers. She noticed Shi-chan appear on the roof a short distance from her, he was leaning upon his staff in pain. His eyes once more appeared the deep violet she remembered.

Her eyes slid closed in pain. “Look out Nytai-chan!” she jerked her head up to Shinigami’s voice in time to see the man she thought she had killed rise with the gun aimed at her. She jumped to her feet when she saw the man grin evilly still clutching the area in which she stabbed him, turn the gun at the approaching boy.

“DUO!” she lunged toward him as the two shots rang out. Nytalia fell lifelessly into the arms of Duo Maxwell who looked totally bewildered. The man fell to the ground as well from the shot, which hit him. Heero was now putting the gun away into it’s holster and running over to the fallen angel. The others followed suit to hover over Duo and the once bright and lively Tenshi no genki. Her body was shivering in his arms clutching the exit wound that sat just below her heart. “I... I’m... sorry...” she spit out the words slowly and breathlessly to the waiting faces.

“Nytalia...” Duo shook his head in disbelief. “No...” he raised his eyes to the approaching angel of death carrying the silver scythe. “You can’t...”

Shinigami winced and lowered his head. “She won’t live if you don’t get her help soon. But time is of the essence my son. Angels can’t live long as humans.” he turned slowly. The face that looked so much like his own bearing into his back.

“Duo... is that...” Duo nodded slowly to the blonde’s question.

“That’s my father...” he choked holding Nytalia tightly. “I truly am Shinigami...” With these words Heero clenched his teeth then rose to his feet.

“Where are you going Heero?” Relena looked up to him in worry.

As he turned to run he called over his shoulder. “To get help. My angel can’t die!” he disappeared leaving the group of youths to watch his disappearing back.

~ After Colony 196 – The Realization

Five silent figures stood around the unconscious body on the crisp white hospital bed. Her chest rose and fell quickly with each shallow breath. Her hazel eyes were closed tightly and her flushed face was contorted in sheer agony. The room was totally silent aside from the monitor’s shrill beeps that marked the irregular heartbeat within Nytalia’s chest. Quatre sat in the worn chair to the left of the bed moving about nervously. Trowa stood by the wall behind him with his emerald eyes closed and his brow furrowed. Heero stood on the other side of the room, leaning against the windowsill gazing solemnly at the motionless girl, never once looking away from her. Wufei sat on the floor near the perfect soldier meditating in complete silence. On the opposite side of the bed sat Duo. His eyes were red from crying and his trembling hands were clasped about one of hers.

A midst the silence a soft click was heard. The five boys glanced up to the door where the familiar robed figure stood. All eyes widened in extreme fear. “You’re not going...” Quatre whimpered softly through newly misted aqua eyes.

A dry chuckle was heard. “No, I’m not.”

“Then why are you here?” Heero glared at him darkly as he walked past Trowa and Quatre to the bedside. Heero’s features twisted with anger and pain as the death angel’s pale hand caressed the even paler cheek.

“Is it wrong to care about some one that is like a daughter to you?” he dropped his head sadly. “Duo...” the braided pilot raised his head slowly to the figure of death. “I need to speak with you...” Shinigami turned slightly. “Now.”

Duo jumped at the sharp intense word at the end. He rose to his feet reluctantly “But what about...”

“I’ll watch her Duo.” Quatre’s small voice answered him. “I think you’d better go.” The azure eyes were still misted with a hint of determination as they gazed up to meet Duo’s eyes. Duo nodded and walked over to the Angel. “Hurry back...” Quatre mumbled softly after the two black clothed men retreating.

Duo followed Shinigami out the door, but instead of entering the hospital’s main wing, he stepped out onto a cliff in the midst of a mountain range. He gasped and his violet eyes widened in surprise. The dry laugh of mild amusement drew his attention back to Shinigami once more. “Didn’t think I could do that, ne?” the black cavern within the hood faced the slender pilot. “Something wrong?” Duo was moving very uncomfortably.

“No... It’s just...” he blinked then scratched his head.

“What is it?”

“I can’t stand talking to someone with out a face.” Duo cringed as if expecting to be yelled at.

Shinigami stood staring at him quietly for a moment then moved to push the hood back. Once again a wave of chestnut and silver cascaded over the strong shoulders and back. The older version of Duo closed the black-violet eyes and sighed. /He deserves this much, right? / “Is that better?”

Duo nodded shortly taking in the shocking view again. “Are you really, truly my father?”

Shinigami nodded without opening his eyes. “I fell in love with a human, much like Nytalia’s mother. We had a child. As punishment, the mother was to die. As for me...” he broke off. The eyes flew open to look at the sixteen-year-old. “Forgive me.”

“Please...” his voice pleaded. “Tell me more.”

Death shivered. /More... he needs to know. Why Nytalia? Why did you do that? He wouldn’t have died. He would have taken my place. You knew that! / Shinigami lifted his hand and he stared at his palm. “I am the oldest angel. I have been around the longest. For that, my penalty was light, yet that much more painful. I was to continue as nothing happened and leave my son to live on his own.” he breathed a deep heart wrenching breath. “Then, when he died, he was to take my place. That will be the time for me to die. It’s suppose to be an honor to you and a punishment for me. Though, when I look it over, it’s you who must live centuries with the memories of pain. I will actually be released from all the torment of my years.” Tears brimmed his cold eyes for the first time since his wife died. One of two times in his entire life.

Duo shivered strongly. “You left me...” the head jerked to face the man whom was his father. “You let mother die? You’re DEATH! YOU are the one who decides who dies!” tears streamed down the trembling boys cheeks. /This is too much! I can’t.... / “Are you truly a heartless angel?”

The words cut through him at an amazing rate. The angel soon knew how it felt to have your heart bleed uncontrollably. All those years he stood watch over his son, wishing only to take care of him, but couldn’t. “I...” he dropped his head crying in waves. /No... let him... it’s his right... I am the one to blame for all of this. Nytalia... why... why? /

“Have you nothing to say for yourself?” Duo screamed in agony. “Have you any idea how painful my life has been for me?!”

/I do... /

“Do you know how much pain I endured when all I loved died right in front of me?!”

/Please believe me... I do... /

“Life has forgotten me just like you did!” The voice cracked with sobs.

“Don’t you dare say that!” Shinigami burst in anger. “YOU go into the hospital room and apologize to that girl who saved your life. SHE IS LIFE!” he growled in agony and pain at the boy who froze before him. “SHE was the one that watched you every moment and gave you hope. The one who loved you when she knew that it would bring nothing but pain and sorrow. You’re an ingrate.” the voice was deep as it growled at Duo. “Put me down all you like, but DON’T you dare talk like that about her!”

“Nytalia...” Duo croaked in despair. /She never left me... / “God... what have I said!” His knees gave and he collapsed to the ground. “Oh please... forgive me Nytai-chan!” He slammed his fists into the ground. “All I love dies right before my eyes!”

Shinigami moved over to him slowly as his anger finally subsided. He placed a hand on the boy’s shoulder placidly. “Forgive me son. I have always loved you. Believe me.” he sighed then walked to sit on the edge of the cliff. “When you are ready I will send you back.” Pulling his knees to his chest he buried his face in them.

Duo rose shakily to his feet, then trudge over to his father. “No... forgive me father.” The angel looked up at him in surprise. “I was trying to blame everything on you. It’s not your fault. You were in love with mother, just like I’m in love with Nytalia.” he blinked then lowered himself beside him. “Father... I think I know why she did it...” with these words, Duo dropped his head on Shinigami’s shoulder and closed his eyes.

“Nani?” Shinigami’s eyes were wide in shock, but the boy did not answer him.

~ After Colony 196 – Shattered Hearts

Nytalia sat in complete darkness in the fetal position. Her hazel eyes darted around wide with fear. /Where am I? / There was a constant thrum of pain in her chest that caused her head to pound uncontrollably. From the darkness a figure stepped out. It was a grown man with black hair and light brown eyes. “Daddy!” her memories flooded over her as she looked up at him.

“Nytai-chan...” He looked at her lovingly. “You’re inside of your mind.”

“My mind?” she rose with a look of puzzlement on her face.

“Yes... you are struggling with yourself. That’s why your body refuses to heal. Half of you wishes to die, the other grasps for life.” He walked over to her and smiled warmly as her cupped his hand about her chin.

“Daddy...” tears fell over the rim of her eyes as she threw her arms about him. “Where will I go if I die?” she shivered. This is the question that puzzled almost all angels. /I really want to know. /

“You’ll be with your mother and I.” the man smiled brightly down upon her. “You’ve grown up beautifully.” he continued to hug her tightly. “What do you want to do?”

Her body trembled at the question. The more she let go and fell into the warm embrace of her father, the more distant the thrumming pain became. It was warmer here with him. Her bright eyes slid closed when a vision of a boy with amaryllis eyes and long braided chestnut hair came looming into her thoughts. “Duo...” she whispered and triggered the pain to grow slightly. She winced then looked again, this time she saw a boy with deep emerald eyes and red-brown sweeping bangs ruffling the feathers of a white owl. “Trowa...” she choked as the pain grew a little more. Another picture invaded her mind of a pair of aqua eyes and golden blonde hair ran by her to hug a silver-white wolf laughing happily. “Quatre...” Once more the pounding invaded her senses causing her mind to go black a moment.

“Nytai-chan...” her father whispered to her softly. This caused her to gaze up at him with a look of complete fear and loneliness. “Just breathe...” he whispered softly starting to bring her back to him.

“Daddy...” she kept her gaze upon him, but another vision invaded. This time a boy with ebony hair and onyx eyes gleamed at her through a pair of wire framed glasses. With in his hand he held a white daisy and in the other a fluffy white kitten. “Wufei...” the pain slammed on her with immense strength causing her to sway slightly, only to be steadied by her father’s strong arms. After recovering another pictured filtered into her subconscious. A boy with tousled dark brown hair and cobalt eyes stared lovingly at her. His lips were curved slightly into a smile and were parted and moving to shape the words “my angel” to her. She smiled and whispered “Hee-chan...” This caused her to fall completely to the ground as the pain filled her mind completely. Her gaze went foggy as she heard a far away voice in her mind.

“Life has forgotten me...” it was Duo’s voice. A shrill cry of pain. A declaration accusing her of never caring for him. She gasped then looked up at her father.

“You heard it?” he frowned slightly then kissed her forehead. “There’s nothing left for you there, is there?”

“For me?” she mumbled softly. “Duo doesn’t care about me.” she whispered. /He doesn’t believe that I stayed there with him at all times... / She was shaken from her thoughts as her father lifted her to her feet and hugged her again.

“It’s ok Nytai-chan. I won’t leave you this time. If anyone leaves, it will be you.” he whispered into her ear in soft tones. “Everything will be ok.”

“Daddy...” she smiled as the pain and thrumming began to vanish as she pressed her head into the warmth of her father’s chest. “I love you daddy...”

~ After Colony 196 – A World without Life

Trowa stood without moving. Several times he felt the urge for his body to tremble, but denied them each time. /Nytalia... / This time he couldn’t help but tremble. /You were my only friend for almost all of my life.../ His eyes pressed tighter together. /Please... / The stinging in his eyes caused him to breathe in deeply from the agony of repressing the tears. / Don’t leave me... I need you... / Just as the tears were about to come a sudden realization hit him and hit him very hard. The beeps were now coming very slowly and very spread out. /No... / The eyes flew open to show misty emerald. His body went numb.

Quatre held the pale hand gingerly, tears welling in his eyes. /You’re my motivation Nytalia. You can’t leave me. You just can’t. / He brushed the deep brown bangs off of her strained countenance and sighed in sadness. /You’re the angel of life... you just can’t leave us without hope, or reason to live. My sweet angel... please! / Quatre closed the stormy azure eyes in pain. A moment later he felt the hand grow cooler in his grasp. He began to listen and noticed for the first time the dying pulse rate. /No! / The eyes flew open in utter fear. The face of Nytalia was becoming far too peaceful as the beeps slowly died.

Wufei sat meditating quietly, appearing to be completely calm. This was a complete false. Within his mind thoughts raced to get processed and were driving him to the brink. /Nytalia... / He frown even harder. /Is this how it is suppose to happen? The angel of life is supposed to leave us just when we find peace? / His heart beat hard within the strong chest. /After I’ve grown to love everything you are and what you stand for? No... you can’t leave me... or this planet. We need you. I need you. / His thoughts grew calmer in time to notice the long silences between beeps. /Nani? / He lifted his head and looked in horror at the almost completely still figure.

Heero gazed at the shifting body and winced when he saw the anguish on her face. /She’s in so much pain. / He closed his eyes and felt the stinging of oncoming tears. / I can’t... I won’t cry... You’ll come back! You have to! You promised me that I would never be alone and that you’d always be with me! MY Angel! / He was removed from his thoughts by the slowing of the shrill beeps. /No... /

Duo walked into the room again with renewed hope. He smiled slightly as he walked to the bed to gaze at the woman he had grown to love with all his being. As he did he noticed that all the other boys were gaping at her in horror. This caused him to open all his senses trying to figure out what was wrong. He looked to the almost completely white Quatre. The boy looked sadly at Duo then pointed to the monitor. Duo threw his gaze to it. He saw it. The growing distance between each pulse. /No... / He dropped to the ground beside the bed. “Nytalia... no! You can’t leave me!” the tears came forth in a renewed wave. He stared into the calming face in utter horror. “No...” he whimpered softly. “Please..” he moaned softly. “Forgive me.” He leaned down and kissed the cooling forehead softly. “I love you so much. I need you.” his eyes grew wide. “You saved me. You want me to live my human life completely. But you didn’t save just me. You saved my father as well. You gave him more time, so he could get to know me. That is something I could never repay you for. Domo.. arigato...”

~ After Colony 196 - Final Decision

“Nytalia?” her father’s voice was warm and soothing. “Have you decided yet?’ she rose her eyes to meet his gaze slowly while shaking her head.

“Ano...” her gaze became puzzled. “I don’t think so...” he patted her head softly, causing her to close her brilliant hazel eyes dreamily.

“Please...” the voice was a soft moan and seemed far away. “Forgive me.” Nytalia shivered as she realized it was Duo. “I love you so much... I need you.”

“Need me?” Nytalia spoke up startling her father. “You need me Duo-kun?” There was no answer, but the words rang in her ears as the thrumming pain returned.

The pale body jumped in response to Duo, causing the pulse rate to stabilize a moment. The boys’ eyes to widen in surprise. “She can hear us...” Duo whispered softly.

Quatre reached out and took her hand in his. “Nytalia! I need you! Please! Don’t go...”

Heero stepped forward blinking away the pain in his eyes “I need you... my angel...” his voice was barely an audible whisper.

Wufei jumped to his feet “I need you as well... the world needs you!” his voice was a whimper, but he retained his normal dignified tone.

A hand brushed by Quatre that caressed the pale cheek. “You were my only friend all those years ago...” Trowa’s voice was unsteady “Don’t leave me... please... I need you...”

The heart rate began to speed up slightly renewing the hope in each set of glittering eyes.

Nytalia stepped back away from the warm embrace of her father. “Quatre... needs me?” her gaze became twisted in pain and puzzlement. “Hee-chan? Wufei?” she doubled over slightly whimpering. “Trowa...” she looked up once more into the pale brown eyes of her father. He now knelt beside her with worry written in his features. “The world needs me...” the pain slowly started to fade “I’m the angel of life.”

The heartbeat began to stabilize as the pale face assumed a look of confusion and thought. Shinigami smiled from the shadow of the doorway. /So you’re putting it together? I’m proud of you. / He slipped into her thoughts and smiled even wider. /You truly are the angel of life. Always putting others before yourself. You are greater than any of us. /

Nytalia smiled as she felt Shi-chan’s presence. She gazed at her father. “He’s proud of me.” he nodded. “I’m really needed...”

“I’m proud of you as well. I know now that this is not your time.” he smiled. “Your mother and I will wait for you.” He stood after kissing her brow tenderly. “Farewell my daughter. I love you very much.” the darkness began to fade into a bright yellow light as his image started to disappear.

“I love you too father. Ja ne...”

~ After Colony 197 – Living Life

“Hey Duo!” Quatre laughed as he called out to the lost looking teen. “We’re over here!” The blonde turned to his two friends that were with him smiling. The deep emerald eyes smiled back at him as did the cobalt blue ones. They were in the park at a large picnic. Duo trotted up to the three and looked around them. “Something wrong Duo?” the Arabian still beamed from his spot on the red and white checkered sheet on the ground.

“Where’s WuFei?” Duo plopped onto the corner of the sheet then lounged back on his elbows. The wind caught his hair and fluttered stray locks of chestnut all around him. He cocked an eyebrow as Trowa chuckled and pointed to a picnic just behind the tree Heero was leaning against. There, to Duo’s surprise lay Wufei with his head in Sally Po’s lap. “Oh!” Duo giggled softly. “Way to go Wu-babe!”

They all laughed happily as they enjoyed the fall breeze, recounting good times and bad. They pointed out each other’s character flaws in good nature and picked on Heero for his long distance relationship with Relena. Then the conversation turned to even more distant pasts. Trowa recounted the story of the little white owl with hazel eyes, and Quatre told the story of the white wolf. WuFei at this time joined in with his story about the little kitten that brought him the white satin flower, and after much encouraging Heero shared his story of the pale angel that came to him and told him he’d never be alone. At this point all eyes fell on Duo. He blushed slightly then told about the little girl that sang him to sleep and told him about the earth. All was silent and each set of eyes fell to the ground.

“I miss her...” Trowa sighed heavily.

“Yeah... It’s been a whole year...” Heero commented quietly.

“It’s not possible she forgot us... is it?” WuFei asked in a low tone.

“She means so much to all of us...” The blonde clenched a fist as he spoke.

Duo said nothing and just closed his eyes. Nobody missed her as much as he did. Nytalia was surly the one who showed each of them how to love, and how to live, but no one loved her like he did. He sighed and closed his eyes, allowing his body to fall backward into the soft green grass. The cool wind slid over his skin and nipped at his hair. “Wonder what she’s doing now...”

“You could always ask...” Duo sprang up at the soft velvet voice that shook his very being. Four very surprised boys and one very confused Sally met his gaze. Slowly he turned his head only to gaze straight into the very hazel eyes he dreamed about every night. “I’m surprised none of you every called me... I’ve been waiting. I was beginning to believe you’d forgotten me, and I had broke out of death’s grasp for nothing.” she winked at them smiling brightly.

“NYTALIA!” all their voices rang out as they launched toward her and hugged her tightly. The angel laughed softly as she hugged them all back. “I’ve missed you guys too.” Duo looked at her a moment in something like confusion. “What’s up Duo-kun?”

He pointed at her clothing. She was wearing a black button up shirt, and black jeans to match the black boots. “When did you start wearing black?” Nytalia giggled and ruffled his hair. “What?”

“I dunno... just sounded like a good idea for the moment.” her radiant smile made him feel very warm as she grabbed his collar and pulled him toward her. “Well... I should be pretty upset that you never mentioned me or called for me again after all that happened... but I can’t be upset with you...” she smiled softly as she pressed her lips to his, kissing him deeply. After parting slightly she turned her gaze to the other bewildered pilots. “I can’t stay mad at any of you... I love you guys so much...” she turned back to Duo and her eyes sparkled as she leaned to whisper in his ear. “I love you Duo... With all of my heart. Just be thankful you’ll be an angel some day... I’ll wait an eternity for you.” with this she kissed him again, this time even deeper.

~ After Colony 197 – A Prediction

Nytalia sat basking in the spring sunlight leaning against the boy clad in black. She sighed happily as he wrapped his arms about her. “Oh Duo...” She looked up at him in time to feel his lips grace her forehead. “I can’t stay too long... you know how things are.” Duo smiled down at her with a nod in understanding. She rose slightly and ran her fingers through his bangs, pushing them from his eyes.

“I understand... As long as I know that you love me...” The violet eyes glittered in the sunlight and made her feel warm and complete. He stood then stretched his hand out to her to help her up. “Will I see you again soon?” he was feeling rather spoiled because she came to see him almost everyday and almost for most of some.

“Perhaps.” she grinned up at him. “You know I’ll try.” She caressed his cheek then reached up to kiss him one more time before leaving him. “I’ll see you soon.” She began to turn away when she noticed a dark figure over his shoulder. “Shi-chan...”

“Nani?” Duo turned to see the angel of death as well. “Father...” Duo smiled. “How are you?”

Shinigami nodded to him. “I’m well, nice to see you my son, I hope all is well.”

Duo grinned happily as he glanced at the pale woman with dark hair. “Never been better.”

“I’m glad.” Shinigami moved toward them and stopped next to Nytalia sending her a telepathic message. “Nytalia... I’ve got some bad news.”

She shivered. “What’s up Shi-chan?”

“You’re going to have to leave them be again.”

“But why?!”

“Something is coming and you can’t get in the way of peace. I’m sorry...”

“I understand. I believe in them. Peace will return because they will fight for it. I’m not afraid like before. I have total faith in them.” she smiled at Duo. “I promised to wait an eternity for them... and I will...”
