Mockingbird

Scientific Name: Mimus polyglottos

Reason for Name: The Mockingbird imitates other birds' songs with something original added.

Size: 9 - 11 inches long and weighing about 2 ounces

Habitat: lives in shrubs, thickets, vines, brush, mesquite trees, near houses; lives in towns, farm country, ranches, and road sides

Nesting Habits: doesn't build nests higher than 15 feet off of the ground, using twigs, weed stems, shreds, strings, and rags to build nests

Field Mark: slender, gray aboe, whitish below the large white patches on wings and a long mobile tail

Diet: beetles, grasshoppers, ants, bees, wasps, earthworms, small lizards, and other insects; also some wild fruit in season such as grapes and holly

Eggs: 1" x .8" in size, greenish to blue in color, spotted brown mostly on top, 4 - 5 hatchlings

Beak and Legs: long legs, slender curved beak
