The Sun

The sun will always shine until the end of the earth. Some days it will shine brilliantly and bring light and heat to the day. Other days there will be a cloudy, overcast sky and the life-giving rays won't get through. Even though it may not seem like the sun will come back, within the next hour, next day, or next week it will eventually come back in all its glory.

Love and happiness will always be around, they will never go away. There might be a war going on, or a fight between friends, or someone dear to you might move on to the next life. Even though you can't see it, there is still love throughout the earth, and happiness still exists inside you. If your day, week, month, or year becomes cloudy and overcast, dig deep inside yourself and you will find out that the key to your own happiness and beauty lie within you, not in your friends, not in the make-up you wear, and not in your clothes. I have experienced my ups, and I have experienced my downs, and though I am still a teen I have already learned that if you look for happiness and love outside of you, you will come short. For a little while when looking outside yourself, you might feel really happy. When you find an outside source, you'll feel great. But then you realize he has stuff you don't, or she is wearing makeup and you're not. You think you need new things, or else how can you live with yourself? You get the JNCO's or you get some lipstick and mascara, then you realize that you're still lacking. You buy more stuff and search for new things to keep you happy because you never have enough. Then you crash again. You're no longer satisfied. Now what? Where do you go from here? The happiness doesn't seem to last; you begin to go in repetitious circles. You think you have found happiness, and then you realize that you're still not happy, then you get something else to make you happy. The circle can be broken. That's the good news. The bad news is that it might not be as easy as it sounds. You ask, "How hard can it possibly be to look inside myself and find happiness?" Sure it sounds easy, but on the way you might discover problems or bad memories, and you start getting pulled back toward the circle. You think, why should I go through this pain? I'm looking for happiness, not all the bad times I've been through. I want to forget about having glue put in my hair, I want to forget about that boy harassing me. I want to forget about being called freckle face, so why is all this coming back up when I'm searching for happiness. These things certainly weren't and aren't happiness. The circle was so much easier than this. The bad memories aren't happiness, but if you dig deeper you will see new light. You'll remember that camping trip back when you were 8 years old and found that little snake. You'll remember swimming in Lake Quinsigamond. You'll remember traveling to Europe. You'll remember what true happiness feels like. You will see that happiness was inside you when you were younger and is still inside you this very day.

Remember, behind the clouds the sun never disappears. Be patient and the bad times will pass and new memories will be made that 10 years from now, when you're looking back on them, will make you smile.

This poem was written by me (Jay Gossett) in April of '99. It's my only real literary work, but I like it and a lot of people think that it's good (well...they could have lied to me) Click Here to send me feedback.
