THUNDERSTORM SAFETY

HOW DO I KNOW I'M IN DANGER DURING A THUNDERSTORM?

  • If you hear thunder, the storm is close enough for you to be struck by lightning. Find shelter immediately!!!

    WHERE CAN I GO TO BE SAFE?

  • Get into a sturdy building or a car. DO NOT take shelter in under trees, small buildings, or in convertible cars.

    BUT WHAT IF THERE IS NO BULIDING WHERE I AM?

  • Get inside a hard-top vehicle and keep the windows up.

    WHAT IF I'M OUT ON THE LAKE?

  • Get out of boats and away from water.

    O.K. I'M HOME DURING THE THUNDERSTORM, WHAT DO I DO?

  • Metal pipes and telephone lines can conduct electricity.

    Unplug appliances not necessary for listening to weather information.

    Avoid using the telephone or any appliance that uses electricity.

    Use the telephone ONLY in an emergency.

    UNPLUGGED AND OFF THE PHONE, WHAT ELSE DO I AVOID?

  • DO NOT take a bath or shower. Turn off air conditioners. Power surges can overload the compressors.

    WHAT ABOUT FLASH FLOODING?

  • Get to higher ground if flash flooding is possible. If flooding begins, abandon cars and climb to higher ground. DO NOT attempt to drive to a safe place.Note: Most flash flood deaths occur in automobiles.
