I've tried to make this site error free - but being human...you already know the outcome. Write and let me know how I can clean up the facts and send information about missing family members. If you see, talk to, or write my grandmother, Jo Pimentel Henley, be sure and thank her for providing the inspiration for this project. And...a special thanks to our Johnson cousins Jack Phegley for sharing his database with me and to Marilyn Johnson Mortensen for her corrections and getting on the bandwagon.

FIRST GENERATION

1. JOSEPH SHIRLEY JOHNSON was born on 4 Aug 1756 in IRE.1 He resided in 1828 in Marion Co, MO.2 He died on 23 Jul 1842 in Marion Co., MO. He had an estate probated on 17 Aug 1842 in Marion Co., MO. Joseph Shirley Johnson died intestate Marion Co MO. His administrative papers are filed in Book B Page 166 in Marion Co. Appointed administrators were Wm. S. and John S. Johnson. Copies of this document in file. He served in the military during the AM REV.3

He was married Sarah (last name unknown). Family oral tradition claims that Joseph Shirley Johnson's parents are J. Johnson b 1698 (who served in Capt Wm. Oldham's Co. of Kentucky Militia in 1770 with Col. Linn's Battallion fighting against the Shawnee) and his wife Margaret Shirley (b 4 Apr 1732-d9 Jan 1822). I don't believe this information to be correct and have not included it in my database. Sarah was born on 27 Dec 1756. She died on 28 Apr 1838. I am working on an idea that Sarah could/might have been the daughter of the William Shirley whose will was filed in Scott Co KY in 1799 and probated in 1805. In that document he names a wife Margaret, daughters Rebecca and SARAH JOHNSON, and sons William, Richard, John, and Robert. JOSEPH SHIRLEY JOHNSON and Sarah had the following children:

At left with Shirley Johnson, first paid driver of the fire department, he is pictured with the results of his labor. Said the Advocate at the time, "Otto is justly proud of his handwork on the old steam engine; under his magic touch it looks spic and span as a new engine." The editor also commented that he would have liked to see the city trade the engine in on a new steam motor which would give Gilroy apparatus "second to no town in the state." In 1916 the city purchased for $5,000 an American La France engine which was kept at Tice's garage until the firehouse was completed during the summer of 1916.
