Gibson County, Tennessee History

Here are some facts I learned about Gibson County that I wanted to share with all of those researching in this area.

GIBSON COUNTY WAS ESTABLISHED ON OCTOBER 21, 1823.

THE FIRST COUNTY COURT MAGISTRATES:


TRENTON WAS SELECTED AS THE COUNTY SEAT. Although, its was then known as GIBSONPORT. The county was named for COLONEL JOHN H. GIBSON.The site of the town was selected by James Fentress, Benjamin Reynolds, William Martin, and Robert Jetton in 1824.

THE FIRST OFFICIERS OF GIBSON COUNTY WERE:

Other GIBSON COUNTY towns were later established.

HUMBOLDT, established in 1858.
MILAN,established in 1858, incorporated in 1867.
RUTHERFORD,established in 1858 by Thomas Cooper and Joseph Knox.
DYER,a small place 7 miles north of Trenton.
YORKVILLEfounded in 1850 by John C. Kuykendall.
EATON, was at Buckner's Bluff;
BRAZIL, GIBSON, MEDINA, BRADFORD, small towns that sprang up along the railroad.
