Examinations
The examinations for this course will focus on the readings and lectures. You are expected to complete required readings for each week and take careful notes during lectures. Examinations will consist of both short answer questions (5-6 sentences) and long essay questions (5-6 paragraphs). The mid-term exam will be taken during a class period to be announced and the final will be given during the time stated in the Course Schedule. The questions on the exams will be drawn from a list of review questions given out in class one week prior to both exams. You should use the week prior to the exam to outline thorough answers to each question. Since you have this week to prepare answers to these questions, your answers on the exams are expected to be complete, accurate, detailed, and well written. You will not need blue books for these exams. All answers will be written on paper given to you in class on the day of the exam – just bring a pen or pencil.
Make-up Exam Policy
All students must take the exams on the announced dates. Make-up exams are only allowed for medical emergencies that are properly documented and signed by a doctor. Notify your TA and then present documentation as soon as possible. Make-up exams must be completed within a week of the original exam date. Failure to do so will result in a grade of zero for the exam that is missed.
Plagiarism and Cheating Policy
Plagiarism is taking another person’s words or ideas and presenting them as your own. The most obvious case of plagiarism involves taking sentences from someone else’s writing and using them without quotation marks or citation. In writing your exam essays for this course it is good to use sentences or phrases from the readings or lectures – but be careful to cite the source by name. It is also plagiarism to hand in essays that are identical to the essays of a classmate. It is good to work in study groups to prepare for the exams, but you must articulate your own answers to the questions – do not just copy the words of a classmate.
If you are caught plagiarizing or cheating on an exam, you will receive an F for the exam and be referred to the Dean’s Office for possible expulsion from the University.
