Ranger Exes Memorial - RHS Class of 1940

Marie Conway Sherman MARIE CONWAY SHERMAN was born July 11, 1924 in Ranger, TX; fortified by the Holy Spirit on March 31, 2012, in St. Louis, MO at age 87. She attended Ranger High School in the Class of 1940. Interment was in Resurrection Cemetery. Beloved wife of the late Lewis T. Sherman; adored mother of Bill (Gail) Sherman, Mary Sherman (deceased), Pat (Ron) Diamond, Michael (Meg) Sherman, Peg (John) Chapman, Ed (Sue) Sherman, Terry (Charles) Sherman, and Chris (Kathie) Sherman; and cherished grandmother of 11. Marie was the heart and soul of our family, and her passing leaves an unfillable void in all of us. Marie is also dearly missed by her best friend, Thelma Hartnett. As close as sisters, they traveled the world and enjoyed cultural events together for many years. Her brother was Dan Conway (RHS-1945). After launching her career as a chemist with Monsanto during World War II, Marie devoted the next twenty years to raising her large and happy family. In the 1960's Marie enrolled in graduate school, earned her Master's Degree and embarked on her career as a nationally-lauded science educator and advocate, with a special emphasis on chemistry education. Marie taught at Ursuline Academy in St. Louis for 45 years. She loved Ursuline, and Ursuline loved her back. She made it her mission to enthuse generations of youngsters È especially girls about science. Marie was also well-known in the St. Louis region for the live chemistry shows she gave at elementary schools since the 1970s. From 1967 until her retirement in January of this year, Marie taught thousands, and personally mentored hundreds of Ursuline Academy students in their pursuit of careers worldwide in science, medicine and engineering. Among her most treasured mementos were the many letters of gratitude she received over the decades from these women whose lives she touched. HUSBAND: LEWIS T. SHERMAN was born July 5, 1922 and died Nov. 16, 1997. He married Marie Conway (RHS-1940) and they lived in St. Louis, MO.
