Sprint missile silos
Here are the Sprint missile silos. The double security fences are now gone, the posts are cut off at ground level and you can see two lines that ring the silo field with dead grass where they once stood at some sites. You wouldn't want to be walking around here when the order was given to fly these birds. It is kind of eerie walking around here knowing that 20 some years ago these missiles and the men who worked here were on a moments notice to smoke some commie missiles if the call came through. Knowing full well they wouldn't stop them all, and they were one of the first targets for extinction, they did their job. So if you know anyone who ever pulled missile duty don't forget to thank them for your freedom, they earned it. |
Close up of silo cover
The cover is made of foam. It is the part you see here and if you punch through that layer there is one more layer below it with an air gap between. |
