Inside the launch building.

The enterance tunnel

You can see a string of lights left by the salvage crews and just below that a few of you will notice the iceberg floating in here. I Don't think the ice ever totally melts in here, and that doesn't mean that the water ever gets much warmer than ice either. It doesn't get up much past your knees and being a small guy I was able to walk on it so only my feet froze. Keep in mind that you can't walk on all of it as I found out when I got too close to a wall for a picture and I was up to my knees again. Good thing I wore my old boots....

The blast doors

These are the doors that seal the place off in event of a strike. There are 2 of them that slide across the tunnel. You can see one of the rollers at the top of the photo. I'd say they are a good 8-10 inches thick or so. They slide across the tunnel and into the other wall about a foot and lock down tight. Once they're shut, "Open Sesame" won't even work. I heard that there was a diesel generator inside the building that drove a huge flywheel. In the event of a strike the gen was shut down and the massive flywheel continued to turn for almost a half hour and that's what supplied the electricity to opperate the facillity. The building was then completely sealed and upon detection by the site radar, the missiles launched, that would be the end of it's mission. By the time a launch was detected by NORAD, a half hour was about all the time left for you to get much of anything useful done for the day.....
