HTML FOR USE WITH ANGELFIRE

To start off with, I am by no means a brain with knowledge of HTML. But I have managed to create all the pages on my website with just a few of the basic commands. I used some of the information that Angelfire provides and then I've picked up other codes from other sources. I'm sure these HTML codes can be used with other webpage providers but they would have to be altered to some degree. I have found, by far, that Angelfire is the easiest to use and even a complete computer novice can make a very nice page just from Angelfire's Basic Edit. I have been asked to share some of my information so that is what I will attempt to do starting with the very beginning. You will find through trial and error that it won't take long before you'll be whipping out pages in a flash and have something in which you can be very proud!

Surprisingly, the most important two tools you need are a pencil and lots of paper! You have already probably been scouring the net and "borrowing" graphics, backgrounds and icons and now you need to write them down so you know what you have.

Now is the time to log in and get everything going. The very first thing you need to do upon entering Angelfire's Web Shell is to scroll down to where it says "Browse" and "Upload". You will need to decide what background you want to use. Since your first page will be the one already indicated as "index.html", your background should try to reflect what your site is going to be about. But, remember, there's no right or wrong so pick whatever you really want to choose. Hit the "browse" button and open the file where you saved your "goodies" and click on the background you want and then hit "upload". Very quickly, Angelfire will indicate to you that the file has been saved to your file list. Now is also the time to repeat this process with any icons and graphics.

Highlight "index.html" and then hit Advanced Edit. You will be brought to a blank page that says <.html> <.body> <./body> <./html>. NOTE: I am having to put a "period" after the < symbol because the browser will try to read it as a code I'm trying to use. Do Not Use These Periods in Any of Your Codes. I delete the last 3 codes for the moment and then add them back later. This may not be proper but it gets the job done!

After <.html>, you will put in the code for your background image:
<.body background=/your state abbreviation/your user name/images/kittens.gif> or as it will basically look: <.body background=/tx/teachers/images/kittens.gif>

To be sure it's there, scroll down this page to "View Page", click it, and it should come up with your background image. Now hit "Back" and it will bring you back to your page for further editing. At any point in time, you can hit "Submit Page" and it will automatically save what you have done.

I always type everything in bold and to do that is simply <.b>. I think it's easier on people's eyes to read a darker print.

Next will come your title which you will want to center. Again it is simply <.center>Your Title Name<./center>. You may notice there is a forward slash in the last center. That is simply telling your computer to stop centering. The same thing applies to most all one-word commands.

Here are some sample one-word commands that are great: <.i> is to italicize, <.blink>is to blink, <.font color=red>is to type in red and <.br>is a carriage return. This one I experiment with to see how many spaces I want between things.

To put a picture, graphic, etc., the code is <.img src=/tx/teachers/images/linda.jpg> or "jpg" could be replaced with "gif"...just depends on how you saved it originally. If you want it to be centered, use the center code before the "img src" code. It gets a little tricky with your mind because you have to remember the codes are not going to show up but yet you're typing all this stuff in!

To do regular typing, simply type. If you want large letters use the code <.h1> and it will

Look Like This

, <.h2> will

Look Like This

and <.h3> will

Look Like This

. The "h" stands for heading but I like the way it looks and it's short! You can also use the term font size such as <.font size="1"> and it will Look Like This and this goes all the way up to a 5. To close the "font size" you only need to type <./font> and not the whole code.

The music code is not that difficult but you may have to play around with it. Go to My Favorite Links and click on Laura's Midi Heaven. She has everything you could possibly want and you can also download Crescendo from her first page (down at the bottom). The code for music is <.EMBED TYPE="music/crescendo" SONG="/tx/teachers/images/jinglebells.mid" PLUGINSPAGE="http://www.liveupdate.com/dl.html" WIDTH=250 HEIGHT=55>. You can alter numbers on the width and height if you don't want the whole Crescendo box showing up on your page. I think 75 and 20 are pretty good.

Now...let's go back to those 3 codes I told you I deleted earlier. I do it simply because I don't usually know what I'm going to do until I start doing it! But after <.html> you need to type <.head>, hit carriage return and type <.title>Describe in About 5 Words What Your Page is About<./title>. This page could be "Lindas HTML Codes for Angelfire. After your body background code, type <.meta name=keywords content="use descriptive single words to describe your page" i.e. for this one: html, lesson, homepage, angelfire. The next line type <.meta name=description content="Describe in a sentence or two about your page" i.e. this page could be An HTML page for use on Angelfire. Easy to learn. Hit carriage return again and type <./head>. These codes or your typing will appear on your page but they do help Search Engines find you when people type in any of the words describing your page.

The last codes will be after you are completely finished and they are <./body> and the next line will be <./html>.

Well...this is about as sweet and simple as I know to make it. I sure hope it gets you started and if you have any questions, I'll try to answer them by email lin@viptx.net. OH! I have two more things and this should finish it up. Type your URL address in all lower case letters even if you are using someone's name in your URL and the best thing next to chocolate is located at http://www.linkexchange.com and it's called Site Inspector. You do not have to join Linkexchange to use this but it will go over your finished page and "grade it" and then tell you what you have done wrong or need to correct. I have learned A LOT using the Site Inspector!

Please be kind enough to sign my Guestbook and let me know what you think about this page....sure would appreciate it!! Good Luck!!

Many thanks to Bravenet for not notifying me of them changing their counters. I have no clue as to how many people have visited this page. I am now using Boingdragon counters....one that I can always rely on unlike Bravenet!!
