THEIR MOTHER'S PRAYER
(Dedicated to Mother Lorow)

Three sons she sent and with a smile for them all,
For she knew each one was anxious to answer his country's call,
In her window she put a service flag and oh, so proudly too,
On a field of white there rested three stars of deepest blue,
As she tacked the flag securely, she silently breathed a prayer,
"Oh, God, watch over and guide those three lads over there."

In one short week she changed that flag, and now so we are told,
That one star remains the same deep blue beneath two of shining gold,
But there's one comfort left her, in that now saddened home,
That neither lad must serve up there in God's army alone,
And though she can't reach out to comfort that lad as she'd so much like to do,
Her every prayer, each hour of the day, is, "God, keep that last star blue."

This poem was written by Carolyn Swan Lorow and dedicated to Hattie Nephew Lorow upon the death of her two sons killed in World War II. Sgt. Arthur Burrell Lorow, Co. I, 22nd Infantry, 4th Division (7/29/15 - 6/9/44) and Sgt. Earl William Lorow, Co. H, 7th Battalion, 2nd Regiment (5/27/18 - 6/2/44). The last remaining star was for Clayton John Lorow who survived the war and went on to live a full life (12/11/09 - 12/21/88).

With much appreciation this page is dedicated to the Lorow family and especially Kelly for sending this beautiful poem to me.
