We are also Americans

We are the children of the people that met the Mayflower,
But, we are also the children of the people who sailed on that ship.
We are the children of the plantation owner.
But, we are also the children of the slaves that felt the whip.
We are also Americans!
We are the children of Tecumseh, Black Hawk and Chief Joseph,
But, we are also the children of Lincoln, Adams, and Washington.
We are the children of Crazy Horse, Geronimo, and Cochise,
But, we are also the children of Pershing, MacArthur, and Patton.
We are also Americans!
We are the children of the half-breeds, mixed-bloods, and Metis of many tribes,
But, we are also the children of the Irish, French and Scottish from far lands.
We are the children of the Celts, Germans and Italians,
But, we are also the turtles that lay our eggs on Turtle Island's sand.
We are also Americans!
We are the children of Thomas's Regiment and the Navajo code talkers,
But, we are also the children of the Nissan Regiment.
We are the children of the Six Nations, the Seven Council Fires, and the Star nations.
But, we are also the children of the voyaguers, the Bois Brule, and the pioneers.
We are Americans --- We are all related!

To everyone who is proud to be an American
My name is Ronnie Gish. I consider myself to be the average
middle-class American and I am proud of this. Those of you who know me
know that most of the time I don't have a problem speaking my mind and
saying things the way I see them (even though I may not always be right I
make an honest effort to be).
Due to the recent events of September 11, I
have spent much time thinking about the way I am allowed to live in my
country and the privileges I am given to take for granted in my day to
day life as I hope each and every one of you has also. From all this
time that I have spent contemplating these things one thing has come to
light in my mind and it has to do with our American Veterans.
Since there have not been any of what I would consider to be major
wars in my adult life time, I have often wondered exactly what it is that
leads to a war and why we have fought the wars we have (I didn't do too
good in history class). But now that these events have taken place, I
believe that I fully understand why we have fought the wars of our past
and why our Veterans have had to perform the duties that they have and
why some have even had to die. I believe that it is simply that our
freedom and the fundamental principles by which we live and that our
Constitution was based on, have been compromised.
I have seen on television many times in middle-east countries where
buildings are blown up, people lay starving and dying in the streets and
military conflicts rule the streets of even the smallest of towns. But I
have always had the attitude, as I think many Americans have, that "that
won't happen here". And for that I am extremely ashamed.
I am ashamed
that it has taken such a tragic incident for me to realize the things
that our American Veterans saw long ago and that they fought so hard
against to keep me from experiencing. I am ashamed that I have known so
many Veterans in my life, including my father and grandfathers, and have
never told them "Thank you for allowing me to live as an American" and
that many of them I will never be able to.
I think that each and every American in this country needs to start
considering what they have been given in life and be more thankful for it
and to take time to thank every single veteran that they know or
encounter from any war or peacetime. I know now that if it weren't for
these people my life so far would have been nothing like the way it is.
Therefor, I take this opportunity to say "THANK YOU!!!" to every veteran
in the United States, and if you agree -- then sign your name to the bottom
of this and pass it on to everyone you can. Lets see if we can get this
to every veteran that still lives in our country today. Show these men
and women that you are proud of what they have done for you.
