THE EXTERIOR

My 1974 Volkwagen Beetle was one of the last to be produced in Germany. I have had the car for the past 10 years and have restored it to the beautiful classic it is today. The Beetle received a new steel reinforced bottom shortly after I purchased it and a gorgeous cherry red paint job expertly matched to the original paint in the interior. The tires are brand new and the hub caps (rare in good condition) are original and still spectacular. A year ago, we had chrome and steel bumpers welded to the frame to give it an all-around finish.

THE INTERIOR

The interior has also been restored with the original front seats restuffed with synthetic polyfill (originally stuffed with treated straw) and a new layer of carpeting covering the front of the car and the smaller "trunk" area behind the back seat. The headliner, which was off-color from years of sun damage, has been completely replaced and sparkles white. The original Wolfsburg steering wheel and seat belts complement the original dash panel with the updated digital stereo and CD player.

THE ENGINE

The engine has been through a rigorous gauntlet of reworking and fine tuning and is in perfect shape today. This car has been a wonderful joy to drive and never hurt my wallet at the pump - usually, I'll fill up when it hits half a tank and the change in my pockets is usually enough to cover the bill.

Overview of the VW Beetle

Designed by Porsche under the orders of Adolf Hitler, the VW Beetle was initially designed to provide cheap transport for the hard working German masses. Built in very small numbers before and during World War Two the Beetle literally rose from the ashes of its bombed-out Wolfsburg factory under the guidance of the British Army.

The Beetle was an instant success at home, Europe, Britain, America and virtually every other country in the world. The model evolved through various face lifts and running gear changes and provided a platform for other models including commercial and sporting derivatives (Karmann-Ghia).

The basic Beetle rear-engine/rear wheel drive layout was used in all of the Beetle derivatives, the engine itself being an air-cooled, horizontally opposed unit. As production raced past the 15,000,000 mark the Beetle went on to be crowned as the best selling car of all time. Production of German Beetles finished in the late 1970's but the car refused to die and has been built in Mexico ever since, evolving into the "New Beetle" in the late 1990's.
