St. Catherine's Academy

St. Catherine's Academy was an Orthodox Christian Homeschool affiliated with St. Philip's Co-Operative in Austin, Texas. We currently have no students - one has completed school, the other has returned to the life of a high schooler in public school to take advantage of social and extracurricular activities.

These students studied core subjects such as English, history and math, and electives include Greek, furniture finishing and nutrition.

Our school has as its patron St. Katherine of Alexandria, also known as St. Katherine of the Wheel (Greek = Aikaterina). Her name day is celebrated on November 25th. She lived during the reigns of the Emperors Maximiun (306-308), Maxentius (308-312) and Maximinus (308-314). Aikaterina was "tall in stature, incomparably beautiful, and exceedingly kind. She was instructed in the wisdom of the Greeks, learning all the works of the poets and philosophers, including Homer, Virgil, Aristotle, and Plato. Not only was she well-versed in philosophy, but in the medical writings of Aesculapius, Hippocrates, and Galen." (from The Lives of the Holy Women Martyrs, Holy Apostles Convent, 1991).

St. Katherine was martyred for her faith after many tortures, including being strapped to a wooden wheel. Before her beheading, she converted the Empress and some 350 souls, scholarly men and soldiers, to Christianity. Her sacred relics repose at the monastery of St. Katherine of Sinai, in Egypt.
