The reason that I make this page is that Betty Drew was a huge influence on
me musically and I'd hate for a band so important to me personally to pass
so unnoticed. The music they created was indescribable and in it they created
and channeled more emotion than I'd ever experienced (outside of SDRE). To get
to experience a band like this play live was absolutely amazing to me because
prior to them I thought that bands of that level really only came from artsier places
like Seattle or even Austin or bigger places like New York. They were the
first band to actually actively interest me in the local music scene. Since, I've
seen brilliant bands come and go in Lubbock....in a very short time. I've seen
a scene divide and friends lost in the ensuing repair and remembering this band
represents for me not only a tribute to one of the best bands I'd ever experienced
but a tribute to a better time for alot of us.
I can't quite remember the names of alot of their songs....they never really said what
they were....one of the most notable of course is "747"
Theie shows....at least from my memory went sorta in this order
Kitchen Club- they played before Dolores and Grayman...it was (I think) their first show and
they made an immediate impression on everyone....they covered "Cars" and they were immediately
1,000 times better than anything else I'd seen to that point..at one point during the show I got so excited
that I left the show to get more people to come see it...so like a dumbass I missed part of the set.
Motor- they had some technical difficulties with the guitar feeding back REALLY loud for alot of the show
but you could still hear that their sound was sharpening and the show was still very amazing....at this show they
had t-shirts....one of which I bought and wear proudly.....
University Records- Stebo was sick and Jamie forgot the to bring a snare drum so someone had to go to
his house and get it.....still awesome...the last song was amazing..Stebo got on his knees and sounded like he
was singing with every bit of emotion he could communicate..."747" was by then a legend of a song to me and the
version they played at this show just solidified it for me...this is where the picture that is the background is from.
It was also the last time I ever got to see them
Kitchen Club- they played with Norman Mayer Group and Grayman, I think. I had to miss the show because it was on a school night.
I still regret it....it was the last show they ever played with Robin and from what I heard their best show.
and then they played a string of shows without Robin at the Motor...but it was never really the same.
