Jasper Newton Levi

Jasper Newton Levi was born June 22, 1836 in Anderson County, Tennessee. He was the son of William M. Levi (born 1817)and Anna (born 1818), grandson of Rice Levi, revolutionary soldier. He was first married to Adaline Tarwater 8 April 1861. It is believed that she died while giving birth to twins.
He married Nancy McCullough 1887 in Evensville, Tennessee. Sometime between 1867 and 1870 he moved the family to Arkansas. East Tennessee was ugly during reconstruction and particularly for former Confederates. He returned after the war and had 8 children.
He enlisted at Knoxville on 1 August in Company A, 4th Battalion (Branner's) Tennessee Cavalry. On May 24 1862 this company became Company H, 2nd (Ashby's) Tennessee Cavalry. He was wounded and captured at the Battle of Murfreesboro on 31 December 1862. He was wounded in the left hip by a minie ball that also injured his testicle. He received a concussion as a result of being thrown from his horse. The horse probably was hit too. He was taken to Camp Douglas, Illinois and was paroled 30 March 1863 and was received at City Point, Virginia 4 April 1863.
He surrendered with his regiment at Charlotte, North Carolina 3 May 1865. When asked in his pension application "Did you take the oath of allengence to the United States government?" He stated "NO SIR" It doesn't appear that he filled out the application himself because his signature is real shakey it is believed that this was his response.
Jasper died 17 November 1902 and Nancy died 26 February 1927 in Rhea County, TN.

"Tales my grandfather Riley Newton Levi and my father Goerge Washington Levi told around the fireplace on cold winter nights", by Barbara Nell (Levi) Morita
Once while lined up on either side of a grassy area, jasper was on a horse new to the noise as his previous horse had been shot out from under him, As they were preparing to charge, his horse took the bit in his mouth and raced across the grassy area strait into the union ranks, seeing the horse was out of control they parted ranks as jasper raced thru at a high rate of speed. entering the woods he circled around and reentered the fight from the rear. Once while on his way back from a scouting trip jasper found a cave with food and several pigs in it hid from the union army, they had been loww on rations for a long time and he promply killed one hog and slung it on horse and went on to camp, going to his captain of the scout unit jasper said cap have you any food? the captain said newt i have only a little coffee and some cornmeal but you are welcome to share it. Then Jasper brought out the hog and they all ate well for that meal.
