Joe G. Johnson

Joseph G. Johnson was born in Mississippi and when he was 15 years old, ran away from an uncle that was apparently abusive. He fled to Texas in 1850 where he had older brothers, several who were veterans of the fight for the Republic of Texas.
After the war Joe hauled freight between Galveston to Limestone County, and resided in Springfield, Texas, close to old Fort Parker, in Limestone County. He married and after his wife died, married again to Mary Alice Downs (whose father fought with the 2d Texas Union Volunteer Cavalry). My Grandmother was the product of that marriage. Later he and his family relocated to Oklahoma where they homesteaded land, and after several drought laden years returned to Texas. He passed away in 1912 from tuberculosis. He is buried in the Prairie Hill Cemetery, Prairie Hill, Texas. He loved music, played the piano and enjoyed singing, it is said.
