MUSTER ROLL of Captain J. C. Thornton Company D First Reg’t Ga Reserves, Army of the Confederate States, Colonel J. H. Fannin, from the 29th day of April 1864, when mustered into the Service of the Confederate States.

Note: This muster roll contains the original entries of the men & boys who enlisted in the First Georgia Reserves, Company D.  It includes the number (order in which their names were recorded), name, rank, enlistment data of when, where and by whom, time period for enlistment, age, height in terms of feet & inches, complexion, color of eyes, and color of hair, occupation and place of residence at the time of enlistment.   Personal data on the first few officers was not so noted, and neither was the soldiers numbered 61-73.  Although it is noted that all Privates should be in alphabetical order, not all are done so and in order to keep this record accurate & authentic, I have listed them according to the original document.

The soldiers who made up Company D of the 1st Georgia Reserves were from the known counties of Elbert (33), Franklin (2), Hart (13), Newton (12), Madison (3), with one listing his place of residence as Chester District, SC, and one for whom no county of residence was listed, only the notation by his name as being “Irish”.

2. L. C. Neal – enlisted as 1st Lieutenant on April 29, 1864 in Atlanta, Ga by Captain W.L. Hubbard for the duration of the War. According to the Patient Register of the Wayside (1st Louisiana) Confederate Hospital, Charleston, SC 1862-1865, 1st Lt. L.C. Neal was admitted to the hospital at Augusta with Debility on 27 December 1864 and discharged on December 29.
3. L. W. Jarman – enlisted as 2nd Lieutenant Snr. On April 29, 1864 in Atlanta, Ga by Captain W.L. Hubbard for the duration of the War.
4. W. A. Shaw – enlisted as 2nd Lieutenant Jnr. On April 29, 1864 in Atlanta, Ga by Captain W.L. Hubbard for the duration of the War.


1. G. W. Crook – enlisted as 1st Sergeant on April 29, 1864 in Atlanta, Ga by Captain W.L. Hubbard for the duration of the War.  He was 17 years of age, stood 5’ 8” in height, dark complexioned with blue eyes and black hair.  He was a farmer from Elbert County, Ga.
2. A. H. Roebuck – enlisted as 2nd Sergeant on April 29, 1864 in Atlanta, Ga by Captain W.L. Hubbard for the duration of the War.  He was 17 years of age, stood 5’ 6” in height, fair complexioned with blue eyes and dark hair.  He was a student from Elbert County, Ga.
3. C. J. Hickman – enlisted as 3rd Sergeant on April 29, 1864 in Atlanta, Ga by Captain W.L. Hubbard for the duration of the War.   He was 16 years of age, stood 5’ 7” in height, fair complexioned with blue eyes and dark hair.  He was a farmer from Elbert County, Ga.
4. R. A. Burden – enlisted as 4th Sergeant on April 29, 1864 in Atlanta, Ga by Captain W.L. Hubbard for the duration of the War.  He was 17 years of age, stood 5’ 8” in height, fair complexioned with blue eyes and dark hair.  He was a farmer from Elbert County, Ga.

John William Colvard was the son of John Stokely Colvard & Sarah Gibson Colvard.  His widow, Lucy, filed for a widow’s pension from Elbert County, GA.  J.W. died about September 7, 1864 while on duty at the Andersonville Prison.
