MUSTER ROLL of Captain W. H. Hartnett Company G First Reg’t Ga
Reserves, Army of the Confederate States, Colonel James H. Fannin, from
the 28th day of April 1864, when mustered into the Service of the Confederate
States.
Note: This muster roll contains the original entries of the
men and boys who enlisted in the First Georgia Reserves, Company G.
It includes the number (order in which their names were recorded), name,
rank, enlistment data of when, where, and by whom, time period of enlistment,
age, height in terms of feet and inches, complexion, color of eyes &
hair, and occupation. No places of residence at the time of
enlistment were noted. However, in the list of those soldiers
“Absentees without leave (AWOL)” published in a Macon, GA newspaper, the
two counties of Pike and Meriwether are noted. Personal information
on the first four officers was not recorded and neither was the soldiers
numbered 62 through 80. Of the occupations listed, 60
were farmers, 2 were shoe makers, 1 harness maker, 1 mechanic, 1 carriage
trimmer and one whose occupation was listed simply as “P.M.” (most likely
PostMaster). One was age 16, 41 were age 17, 3 were age
46, 20 were age 47, 3 were age 48 and 2 were age 49.
All transcriptions contain errors to some degree due to human nature.
I’ve tried diligently to transcribe these records as error free as humanly
possible in spite of age weathered microfilm containing dark spots or spots
so light as to illegible. I hope this muster roll will be of
some small benefit to you in researching your Civil War ancestor’s military
records.

Edward Turner and his family are found in the 1860, 1870 &
1880 census reports for Pike County, GA. A story about him was written
in 1968 by a family member – Rev. A.C. Turner. It was told to him
by Edward’s granddaughters, Mrs. Mattie Bell Burnett and Mrs. Florence
Harrison. “During the Civil War, Edward C. Turner was a guard at
Andersonville Prison, where the Confederacy held Federal prisoners, and
where much cruelty was charged to the officials. Edward had charge
of the bloodhounds. One night, three men escaped and Edward took
the dogs and tracked them down. To their surprise, he was kind to the men.
They had climbed trees to escape being torn by the dogs, as they expected
to be. Edward treated them with kindness and consideration.
They thanked him, and one of the prisoners, anxious to express his appreciation,
gave him a button off his shirt, the only thing he had to give, as a token
of his and their appreciation. Mrs. Perry (Mattie Bell) Turner Burnett
still has this button and treasures it most highly.”
