Mark Caudle

Mark Caudle was born in 1806 in North Carolina to James and Mary Pertis Caudle. He moved with his family to the Red River District near Mt. Vernon in November 1841. Mark enlisted as a private in Company I, 9th Texas Cavalry (Sim’s). His three sons, James D., Joseph and Marcus Newton Caudle also served in the 9th Texas Cavalry. His nephew, James H. Caudle, served with them and was elected Corporal of Company I. Another one of Mark’s sons, William J. Caudle, enlisted in the 23rd Texas Cavalry, Company I, in December 1862. Mark was furloughed in February 1862 for health reasons and then he was discharged October 14, 1862 at Camp Reeves, perhaps because of his health or the Conscription Act of April 16,1862.
