Alexander Marion Reaves

At the time of the birth of Alexander on 10 of January 1844, it found Alexander with his parents Green and Jane Johnson REAVES with his brother and sister’s living in Sabine Parish, LA.
Alexander married his first wife Mrs. Rhoda Evaline (Cox ) Rankin on the 17 of June 1866.
Like his brothers Charles and George Reaves the 4th of March 1862 found Alexander joined in the Civil War. Only Alexander joined Captain R.N. Calhoun’s Cavalry Co. of Texas volunteers, N.H. Darne LL’s Reg., CSA. This Company became Co., F, 18th Tx. Cavalry. At that time he stated he was 19 years old and resided in Llano, Texas. He brought with him a $120 horse, $20 of horse equip., $30 gun and $75 pistol. Alexander was described as being 6’1” tall with grey eyes, brown hair and of dark complextion.
On 11 Jan 1863 – Alexander Marion Reaves is on the Roster of Troops of the Confederate Army captured at Fort Hindman, AR. On the 8 Jan. 1863 Alexander is moved to Camp Douglas, IL. On 11 Jan. 1863 along with 451 other Prisoners of War he was paroled and released at Camp Douglas , IL. On 25 Nov 1863 Alexander was recaptured and was sent from Nashville TN., to Louisville, KY, “For Exchange”.
On 4 Jan. 1864, Rock Island Barracks, IL., - Alexander Marion Reaves switched sides. Enlisted in the US Navy as a Landsman. On 25 Jan was transferred to the Naval rendezvous, Camp Douglas, IL., with assigned svc, on the “Ohio” thru 21 May 1864; on the “Circassian” 22 May 1864 – 14 April 1865; and on the “Ohio” 15 April – 10 June 1865 when he was discharged at Charleston, Navy Yard, MA. During the Navy service he worked on board the ships from Boston to Galveston Harbor and suffered from “palpitations because of overheating caused by overwork and exhaustion”. He then returned to Texas and was known as amongst his contemporaries as a “Blue Belly”.
29 Jan 1882, Austin, Texas at the age of 39 he submits his application for Pension. On the 24 of December of 1902 Rhoda (1st wife) dies. At that time A. Marion is 61 years of age. He returned briefly Scurry Co. after the death of Eva.
17 March 1908 in Pottawatomie Co., OK., he marries Mrs Lena McGlothern. They had one son Marion which died at the age of one year.
This appears to be the 3rd marriage for Lena. On the 9th of Nov 1910 A. Marion Reaves dies and is buried locally.
