The President announced today his intent to nominate John F. Tefft to be U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Lithuania.

Mr. John F. Tefft, of Springfield, Virginia, is a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Minister-Counselor. He joined the Foreign Service in l972 and has served abroad in Jerusalem, Budapest, Rome and Moscow. Mr. Tefft has also held a number of positions at the U.S. State Department including Director of the Office of Northern European Affairs and Deputy Director of the Office of Soviet Affairs. Mr. Tefft was born in Madison, Wisconsin and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee and a Master of Arts degree from Georgetown University.

OLYMPIC BASKETBALL SCHEDULE

US Opens Vs. China in Olympic Hoops

SYDNEY, Australia (AP)

The United States men's basketball team will play China in their opening game of the Olympic tournament.

During the draw held today at the Sydney Superdome, the United States, Italy, France, Lithuania, China and New Zealand were placed in Pool A.

Pool B will consist of Australia, Canada, Yugoslavia, Spain, Russia and Angola.

The two groups of six teams will play each other in a round-robin system in the preliminary rounds.

The top four teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals, the semifinals and the final.

Players on the American team include Tim Duncan, who led the San Antonio Spurs to last year's NBA championship, Kevin Garnett and Grant Hill.

The men's basketball tournament begins on Sept. 17, two days after the opening ceremonies.

In the women's draw, Slovakia, Senegal, Canada, Australia, France and Brazil will play in Pool A, with United States, Russia, New Zealand, South Korea, Poland and Cuba in Pool B.

The United States women will play South Korea in its opening match Sept. 16, with Australia playing Canada.
