Walter Donald "Don" Otto was born to Oliver H. and Sarah Yaggy Otto on Aug. 29, 1949. He passed away on Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at his residence. His grandparents were Walter Esher and Christelle Hemphill Yaggy. Don grew up in San Angelo, attending Santa Rita, Lee Junior High, San Angelo Central High and Angelo State University.
Don loved fishing and hunting and being in God's creation. He loved catching crawdads in Sulfur Draw Creek, fishing at the Camp near Christoval and in the mountain creeks of New Mexico. He was a master fly fisherman. Don was a friend to many - a listening ear, a warm and generous heart. He loved to share the Camp and his mountain cabin with others; and with his wife, Jacquie, quietly prepared weekly meals for the Carmelite nuns. Don had worked at Cameron Wholesale since high school and retired in recent years. Don also had served on the board of the Humane Society.
Don is survived by his wife, Jacquie Otto; children Brian Davids and wife Donna and Jessica Byrd; five grandchildren, Christopher, Brooklyn, Bryden, Aren and Rileigh; a brother, Oliver H. "Buddy" Otto Jr,. and wife Bonnie of Christoval, Texas. sister Sarah E. "Sally" Ray and husband Dr. Phillip C. Ray of Dalhart, Texas; nieces Laura Harrison, Julia Taylor, Sunny Otto; nephew Christopher Otto and numerous cousins and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Dr. Robert Michael Otto.
Don loved them all and loved his animals. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with Fr. Robert "Bob" Hedges officiating with Fr. Philip C. Ray assisting. A reception will follow the service in the Church's Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to the Humane Society of Tom Green County or the Carmelite Nuns, Our Lady of Grace Monastery, Christoval, Texas.
