GENE EDWARD FLY

Gene Edward Fly, 52, went to be with his heavenly father on Monday morning, Aug. 18, 2003, after a long, courageous battle with a debilitating illness.

Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 20, in Belvedere Cemetery with Hospice Chaplain Mike Burson officiating. A family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Johnson’s Funeral Home.

A native of San Angelo, Gene was born Sept. 29, 1950. He is the son of Bruce Fly and Joy Martin. He attended San Angelo schools, Levelland Junior College and the Grapevine Farrier School.

He served six years in the Texas National Guard.
In 1991, he was married to Jody Washington of San Angelo.
An avid outdoorsman, Gene enjoyed hunting and fishing from Alaska to Mexico.
He pursued a variety of interests and worked as a cowboy, farrier, steelworker, roughneck, lineman, police officer and as a narcotics task force investigator. Throughout his working career, Gene assisted his father and his partner, James Crimm, in the operation of the “Flying C” ranching and farming endeavors.
In his oilfield work, he spent nearly 10 years on the Alaskan North Slope.
Gene’s love of the outdoors was enhanced by sharing his adventures with people he loved. Part of his legacy was to inspire others to live life to the fullest while never complaining of his own misfortune. His tenacity and insistence on “building memories” will be treasured by his many friends and family.

Gene is survived by his wife, Jody, of San Angelo; two sons, Brad Fly and his wife, Mercyla, of San Angelo, and Corey McKenna and wife, Darla, of Liberty Hill; his mother and father, Bruce and Joy Fly of San Angelo, a brother, Lyndon B.
